Hey Arnold - Season Two Review

Hey Arnold - Season Two
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It basically has the same tech specs as the last one (check my Season 1 review for more details), but here's what episodes are included in the DVD!:
Disk 1:
Save the Tree, New Teacher, Helga's Love Potion, Gerald's Secret, The Big Scoop, Harold's Kitty, Longest Monday, Eugene's Pet, Monkey Business, Big Caesar.
Disk 2:
Ransom, Ms. Perfect, Arnold's Halloween, Arnold saves Sid, Hooky, Freeze Frame, Phoebe Cheats, Mud Bowl, Gerald Moves Out
Disk 3:
The High Life, Best Friends, Steely Phil, Quantity Time, Eating Contest, Rhonda's Glasses, Helga's Boyfriend, Crush on Teacher, Hall Monitor, Harold's Bar Mitzvah
Disk 4: Coach Wittenburg, Four-Eyed Jack, Eugene Goes Bad, What's Opera, Arnold?, Tour de Pond, Teacher's Strike, Runaway Float, Partners.
Looks like "Biosquare" will have to wait until Season 3!
- All of the disks are 115 minutes long, except the last, which is 92 minutes. It's 459 mins all together. ^^ 19 eps~
- It comes with a different 'episode selection' screen than Season 1, but I can't take screenshots now XD (and it's not that big a deal, lols)
Any more questions? :0
- Oh, my personal favorite episodes in this Season are "What's Opera, Arnold?", "Arnold's Halloween", "Monkey Business", "Helga's Boyfriend", and "Runaway Float" lol! But these are all subjective, mind you. ;)
Thank you, Amazon/Nickelodeon! Though you are taking a while to make/ship the DVDs now ;) lol, I bet you didn't think so many people wanted them, eh? ;D hehehe! Thanks for reading!

Doug- Season 1 (3 Disc Set) Review

Doug- Season 1 (3 Disc Set)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Introduction (Taken from the DVD set):
Tune in to this classic show featuring Doug and his pals Skeeter, Patti, Roger and Beebe. They dance, they camp, they doodle, they play, and they...blow up the science room? It's one wild adventure after another with Doug and all his pals.Memorable Episodes:
As someone who has seen the show during its original run, it's really tough to pick out just a few memorable episodes...each episode holds a special place for me! There are a few obvious ones, though, and I'll go over those. In the premiere episode "Doug Bags A Neematoad", Doug and his family move to Bluffington, and worries that he won't make any friends there. He experiences the good...and the bad, but in the end, it's all one big learning experience.
In "Doug Gets Busted", as described in the introduction, Doug creates a volcano for a science experiment, and when a rumor is spread that it caused the lab to explode, Doug becomes "Jack Bandit" to run away from possible trouble.
In "Doug Rocks", Doug and Skeeter get a chance to see The Beets live, but Skeeter gets grounded. Doug wants to go, but decides to stick with his best friend. They get a nice surprise in the end, on their visit to the Honker Burger.
In "Doug Is Quailman", Doug begins to doodle his favorite cartoon superhero, Quailman, and imagines himself as the title hero, in his own adventures.Packaging:
The packaging is a very standard Amaray-style case, which holds the three discs. The case actually feels quite sturdy, and the discs do not overlap each other. The artwork is simple, and it gets the job done. The discs themselves are printed on a nice, glossy, and high quality label, which gives it a professional look and feel to it. Episodes are all listed on the back of the case, without descriptions.Menu:
The menus are very simple..almost too simple. They don't really look professionally done. I'm sure anyone could pull off a better menu using Nero. Main menu gives you the options of Play All or Episode Selection.Video/Audio Quality:
If you're familiar with Doug during its original airings, or even the reruns on Nickelodeon and Nicktoons Network, you're probably familiar with the quality of the show. Pretty much the norm of Nickelodeon shows (and Nicktoons), they resemble that of VHS quality. Honestly, I don't think any cleaning up was done to these episodes, but don't get too worried, cause there's probably not much that could be done to the episodes anyway. Video isn't too consistent, plenty of color changes at random, a bit dull and not too bright in the color department...but hey, that's just reviewing the original source. Some episodes do look fairly sharp. I didn't notice any visible compression on any of the episodes. Audio is in 2.0 stereo, as originally aired, and pretty much makes use of both channels well enough. Dialogue is clear and volume is consistent. I didn't notice any problems with the audio at all.
As for episode lengths, despite it being a Paramount property, it's being released through Amazon's Burn-On-Demand feature, courtesy of CreateSpace, so don't worry about any "Some episodes may be edited..." nonsense that is typical of CBS Paramount releases. If you want to see consistency, the lengths are very consistent, depending of course. Take note, though, not all episodes have the intro intact, but I guess that has to do with the DVDs each being one long feature, broken down by chapter. I'm not a fan of this at all, but I guess the intro is there in some form, at least. You'll notice that the episodes with the intro are maybe a second or two apart, and the episodes without the intro are also a second or two apart from each other. Ending credits are intact on all episodes, and for the closing logo fans, the dark blue variant of the Jumbo Pictures logo and the Nickelodeon logo with the 1991 copyright year are both present. Episodes (with lengths) are as follows, per disc:
Disc 1:
1. Doug Bags A Neematoad (23:33)
2. Doug Can't Dance / Doug Gets Busted (23:31)
3. Doug's Dog's Date / Doug's Big Nose (22:46) *
4. Doug Takes a Hike / Doug Rocks (22:47) *
Disc 2:
5. Doug Can't Dig It / Doug Didn't Do It (23:31)
6. Doug, Mayor for a Day / Doug's No Dummy (23:33)
7. Doug to the Rescue / Doug's Cool Shoes (22:46) *
8. Doug Gets His Ears Lowered / Doug On The Wild Side (22:47) *
Disc 3:
9. Doug's Big Catch / Doug Needs Money (23:32)
10. Doug's Doodle / Doug's Runaway Journal (22:47) *
11. Doug's Cookin' / Doug Loses Dale (22:47) *
12. Doug is Quailman / Doug Out in Left Field (22:46) *
13. Doug's Fair Lady / Doug Says Goodbye (22:46) *
Note: * represents episodes with the intro missing.Special Features:
In a perfect world, there'd be promos, behind the scenes, commentary, deleted scenes, and much, much more. Sadly, this isn't a perfect world. You're just getting the episodes here. Nothing more, nothing less.Final Comments:
Despite lack of extras and very cheap-looking menus, Doug is finally out on DVD. The episodes are uncut (minus a few missing intros), and the quality on par with the original airings. If you are a fan of the show, Nickelodeon, or the 90's in general, buy this DVD (and season 2)! The show hasn't been on reruns in a while (at least, in the US), so there's one more reason to buy it. If you need one more reason, think of it like this: Paramount damn sure won't put it out on DVD themselves, after the Nick Rewind collection failed badly in sales, so this is the only chance it has of getting an official DVD release. I highly recommend it, and here's hoping seasons 3 and 4 are added to CreateSpace.

Clarissa Explains It All - Season One (1991) Review

Clarissa Explains It All - Season One (1991)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fun collection of episodes from one of Nickelodeon's best shows. Melissa Joan Hart did an excellent job portraying Clarissa. The show had a wit and irony about it that I loved. Also loved the way Clarissa dressed, her unique fashion sense and how she dealt with all the problems she had as a teenager in a funny way that gave advice at the same time. Theres 2 disks in this set-
Disc One Season One
Episodes
1.Clarissa's Revenge- Ferguson brings Clarissa's training bra to school. Clarissa plots to get revenge with Sam's help.
2.School Picture- Clarissa wants to express herself and her individuality but her mother wants her to dress more conservative or ( dweeby) for picture day.
3.No TV- Mother Janet makes a( no tv for the week ) rule. Rest of family stoops to desperate measures to catch a glimpse of their favorite TV show.
4.Urge To Drive- To earn money to buy a used car clarrisa takes to selling Christmas Cards in July.
5.Clarissa network news- Clarissa wants to be the next Jane Pauley. Mom is having a life crisis.
6.Haunted House- Clarissa's aunt is visiting and she pretends the house is haunted hoping her aunt will leave early. Turns out Aunt is a fan of the supernatural.
7.The Bully- Ferguson is being nice and has Clarissa very concerned.
Disc Two
1.New Edition- Clarissas parents want to have another baby. Ferguson and Clarissa hatch a plot to convince their parents it would be a bad idea.
2.Brain Drain- Ferguson scores high on an IQ test and convinces himself he's a genius. Now hes out to conquer the game show world!
3.Clarissa makes a cake- Clarissa and Sam set out to bake a cake for the parents anniversery. Watch Out!
4.Parents who say No- Clarissa wants to get a job at the local carnival but mom and dad think she is not mature enough yet. When they finally give in, Clarissa wishes they hadn't!
5.Cool Dad- Clarissa teaches dad how to be ( hip ) for her school's career night.
6.Sick Days- Clarissa dosent want to be in the boring school pageant so she fakes being sick. But when the pageant gets revamped she wants in. Too late, now that she's really ill.
Also contains Special Features of Melissa John Hart on MTV Show Cribs. A Nick Time Capsule. 1991-1993. Full screen format/ Dolby Digital.
Overall cool collection of episodes. Highly Recomended.
I also recomended Pete & Pete Season One.

Ren & Stimpy - The Complete First and Second Seasons (1991) Review

Ren and Stimpy - The Complete First and Second Seasons (1991)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's hard to believe that after 100 reviews, none contain a comprehensive list of the edits that were made to this set. As a result, there is a lot of misinformation in many of these reviews. Some reviewers are complaining about edits that do not even exist on this DVD set. Below is a COMPLETE list of footage missing from this set and the approximate length of the missing footage:
Ren's Toothache:
Ren and Stimpy saying goodnight to each other (13 s)
Stimpy spitting into a jar and flossing (38 s)
Some of Ren grinding his teeth (10 s)
Haunted House:
The entire bloody head fairy scene (1:55)
Big Baby Scam:
Closeup of Ren's face being rubbed against stubble (7 s)
Grandpa whistling in the bath (9 s)
The Cat that Laid the Golden Hairball:
Stimpy licking most of the hair off his body (45 s)
Son of Stimpy:
Ren giving a Christmas present to Stimpy's picture (20 s)
So out of 32 cartoons, there are five that contain missing footage, which amounts to a little over four minutes total. NOTHING ELSE THAT ORIGINALLY AIRED IN THE FIRST AND SECOND SEASONS OF REN & STIMPY IS MISSING FROM THIS SET. All five goodbye scenes and all commercials are here, Powdered Toast Man is the uncut version, etc. Plus, a few scenes that never aired in the first place have been added to some cartoons. Sven Hoek has two (Additional dialogue in the closet, Ren saying "I'm going to gouge your eyes out"), Big House Blues pilot version has two (Dog-catcher saying "see if I care", the Ren talking in his sleep scene), and Dog Show contains the image of George Liquor with his bobbed tail. And of course the set includes Man's Best Friend which wasn't aired until recently on Spike TV, and bonus features like the pencil test of Sven Hoek, a 12 minute featurette, 7 commentaries, and an art gallery.
Some reviewers have mentioned the fade-to-commercial breaks in some of the cartoons. For the most part these are barely noticeable (except in Ren's Toothache, Big Baby Scam, The Cat that Laid the Golden Hairball, and Son of Stimpy where the above edits occur). I noticed these artificial fades in 15 cartoons. If there are more, I simply didn't notice them, which would prove my point that they are barely noticeable. Here is the list:
Robin Hoek - after they give to the poor
Nurse Stimpy - after the icky tasting medicine
Space Madness - after Stimpy turns off the gravity
The Boy Who Cried Rat - after Stimpy is given 5 bucks
Black Hole - after they run to the bus stop
Ren's Toothache - before Ren is grinding his teeth
Man's Best Friend - after Stimpy gets on the couch
Mad Dog Hoek - after Ren lets Stimpy keep wrestling
Big Baby Scam - when Ren's face is being rubbed against stubble
Dog Show - after George Liquor enters the final arena
The Great Outdoors - right before the skinny-stomping
The Cat That Laid the Golden Hairball - when Stimpy starts to lick his other arm
Visit to Anthony - when the father begins to enter the den
Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen - after they get struck by lightning
Son of Stimpy - when Ren is about to give a present to Stimpy's picture
Now, as far as video and audio quality is concerned, most of the cartoons are excellent. Most of the cartoons are digitally remastered and they look noticeably better than the ones that aren't. The cartoons on this set look much better than the versions that appeared on the Time Life set. Here is a list of the episodes that are not digitally remastered:
Fire Dogs / The Littlest Giant
In The Army / Big House Blues (Nick version)
Monkey See, Monkey Don't / Powdered Toast Man
Fake Dad / Out West
Stimpy's Fan Club
Of these, only Big House Blues (Nick version) and Stimpy's Fan Club have noticeably poor quality with some color bleeding and video artifacts. The pilot version of Big House Blues looks superb though, so nobody should care about the Nick version.
I hope this information clears things up for people who are still trying to decide whether to buy this set. I still say it's well worth it despite the flaws I have outlined above. My recommendation is to buy the set but write letters to Paramount in the hopes that they will start a disc-exchange program for the edited episodes.
