Medium: The Complete Fifth Season Review

This show has a likable, great cast. I honestly keep forgetting that Patricia Arquette is acting. She is so convincing that it's hard not to take the character of Allison seriously, instead of "what a loon." I'm a mom and it's WONDERFUL to see someone who looks like a mom instead of glamourous star with tons of makeup. Joe and Allison have real fights. Joe isn't perfect. Allison isn't perfect. Their marriage deals with faith and trust in each other, broken cars, losing jobs, taking kids to the doctor, etc. I love the family relationships. The kids act like, well, normal kids. Is anyone else tired of "super-brainy," mouthy brats being promoted on TV?
The DA, lead detective, and deputy mayor make up the other side of Allison's life. Another great ensemble! All three are down to earth and none fit into the usual niches of their roles. The DA doesn't act like a law book. The lead detective doesn't act like Starsky or Hutch. The deputy mayor is both logical and calming. They're intriguing characters and I would like to hear more of their stories, too.
I was SO glad that CBS picked up "Medium!" I am hoping that CBS will do a better job in promoting this little gem filled with a new mystery every week. With NBC and its crazy scheduling, I missed the first couple of episodes before I knew that it was back on the air. Never got to see reruns during the summer--I hope that changes.
I've purchased the first four seasons and am looking forward to this release!

Survivor - The Complete First Season (2000) Review

Survivor - The Complete First Season (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In June 2000 the landscape of American television was starkly different than it is now; nearly all shows stopped production in the summer, and aside from a traditional game show fad that was beginning to subside, all programming was scripted fiction.
Then Charlie Parsons and Mark Burnett brought to CBS an idea that, while not entirely original in concept or design, was remarkably different than anything currently being aired in the United States. It was a "reality" show, based on the hit Swedish program "Expedition Robinson", in which a group of strangers were dumped on an island and forced to fend for themselves, and vote each other off one by one. They called their version "Survivor", and it kicked off a TV revolution that does not appear to be going away.
This first season of "Survivor" established all the rules which, eight seasons later, are considered gospel by fans and contestants alike: sixteen players are divided into two tribes where they must build shelter, find food, and compete in challenges. Lose the challenges and you face Tribal Council, where the tribe votes out one of its players, be they the weakest link, the bossiest leader, or the slimiest snake. Eventually the two tribes merge into one where the challenges become individual and the field is ultimately levelled to two remaining players who are judged by their fallen peers. One is left standing to claim the million-dollar prize and the title of Sole Survivor.
With these parameters, sixteen Americans volunteered to be the initial guinea pigs, and were marooned in Borneo. Some were there for the adventure, some for the fifteen minutes of fame, and some for the money. It was, in the end, a game, and those who sought the pot of gold proved the most ambitious. One of the only rules of Survivor is that you cannot conspire to share the prize money. The Pagong tribe, consisting of mainly younger players like Jenna Lewis, Colleen Haskell and Greg Buis, were quite content with this and opted to lay back and let the cards fall where they may. But the Tagi tribe (including Rudy Boesch, Susan Hawk, and, of course, Richard Hatch) discovered early on that you could bend the conspiracy rule without actually breaking it. If they all voted together as a bloc, they'd have the numerical advantage to ensure a slot in the final four or five. You could call it an arrangement, or agreement. They called it an alliance.
The alliance strategy ultimately proved the obvious way to go, and it was perhaps that one aspect of this first season which proved the most influential on the seasons which followed it; nearly every subsequent winner of the game has used a solid alliance to get them to the top. It is not always the ringleader, not always the strongest or smartest. No one person or personality is guaranteed victory in this wholly unique game, because the game is shaped by the people who play it, and no two people are the same. Survivor was an almost instant ratings smash, and the first season finale ranks among the most watched events in recent years, and this can be attributed not to its sex appeal or entertainment quotient, but its curiosity. Random people scheming and plotting to outlast each other in a democratic process. Survivor is, at its core, a microcosm of Western society and politics, a grand sociological experiment of the Pax Americana.
The DVD release of the complete first series allows many fans who have forgotten or did not see the original Pulau Tiga castaways to experience, or re-experience, the show that they fell in love with those four long years ago. And coming with the hindsight of eight sequel seasons (season nine is being cast as of this writing, and producer Burnett and host Jeff Probst are reportedly signed through season twelve), it is a real trip to go back and watch how it all started; when grubs were considered "gross food", sloppily-edited credits gave away future events (giving berth to the wild internet "spoiling" subculture), and "alliance" was considered a dirty word. Probst is shaky here; the job is new to him and there is no edge to his attitude. It is a new experience to him, as it is to everyone else. And all the great moments are here: Greg and his "coconut phone", Sean's alphabetical voting strategy, and of course Susan's infamous "snakes and rats" jury speech, often imitated but never duplicated.
Survivor fans will need a copy of Season One. Others may want to consider this as the perfect place to start catching up on what they've been missing.

Ghost Whisperer: The Fifth Season (The Final Season) Review

I know this hasn't come out yet (I'm sure it will be as bittersweet as any other end of a series DVD), but I just wanted to prelude its release with a plea to other fans of this show. Maybe if we buy the DVD's right away it will show CBS that they made a HUGE mistake. If sales were through the roof maybe they would realize their mistake and try to pick it up again. This happened when they cancelled Angel, only everyone involved had moved on to permanent jobs already (Bones, Supernatural). Jennifer Love is just doing small movies and guest spots right now, the writers are developing new projects, but maybe it's not too late. This just sucks. Why are network people so stupid? If you go buy the numbers and not by the fan output and desire you are not really seeing the true popularity of a show. How many people have a Nielsen box anymore? This crap that they pull is the reason why I watch the shows on DVD instead of TV. But I'm Canadian so it's not like my ratings count anyway.
Shuffling the time slots every few months, changing days to see if it will go up against another network's most popular show, showing re-runs for 3 or 4 weeks every few new episodes.... Just stand behind your show and leave it alone and you'd really see how popular it is you business school morons. I don't think we'll ever see a network hold onto a show for 10 years again... gone are the days when a show like Friends or Seinfeld can fluctuate in ratings but still stay until THEY want to leave. I miss the days when TV didn't disappoint me on a daily basis. We're really not all as stupid as you think we are Hollywood, we're getting tired of your crappy movies, re-makes of EVERYTHING that has ever made money in the past and your cheap reality TV shows. Just tell me Medium isn't next!

Rant over.

Melinda Gordon (Jennifer Love Hewitt) has a gift - she can communicate with earthbound spirits or ghosts who cling to the living because they have unfinished business in our world preventing them from "crossing over" or going into the light. Inspired in part by the work of famed medium James Van Praagh and of Mary Ann Winkowski, a real-life communicator with earth bound spirits, GHOST WHISPERER explores the spiritual side of life and death. Melinda navigates between the dead and the living with her sometimes chilling, sometimes heart-rending and sometimes amusing actions as an intermediary between the ghosts and those they haunt. Although she is very good at being an intermediary she never publicizes this gift instead is known around town as a newlywed and the owner of the successful antiques store, Same As it Never Was. Firefighter Jim Clancy (David Conrad), Melinda's husband, knows that being an intermediary between the living and dead can take an emotional toll on his wife and worries that he might not be able to protect her as well as he would like. Melinda has also recently revealed her gift to new friend and employee, Delia Banks (Camryn Manheim), a single mom of teenager Ned Banks (Christoph Sanders). Melinda fears what the consequences might be of drawing Delia into this unconventional world, as Delia, unlike her son Ned, is a bit skeptical of Melinda's gift - although she loves Melinda unconditionally as a friend. Melinda has also shared her secret with Eli James (Jamie Kennedy), a psychology professor at Rockland University, who is a unique individual - he has the gift of hearing ghosts, but not seeing them. For her part, Melinda accepts her unique abilities as a blessing and sometime curse, but always helps her clients, alive or dead, find emotional closure. Currently in its fourth season, Ghost Whisperer plunges into new territory by literally rocking the foundations of the series with a new mythology - Love Transcends Death.

Criminal Minds - The Second Season (2005) Review

Criminal Minds - The Second Season (2005)

This season starts with a bang, following the last season shooting of Agent Elle Greenway, and completes that story arc. The actors are again all in good form and give excellent performances. This is a more cerebral series than most other police/mystery dramas. It centers on the functions of the FBI's Behavorial Analysis Unit (BAU) and its role in solving the most difficult of cases throughout the country. Interesting, believable stories with excellent acting and solid characters make for a very watchable, suspenseful TV show. A very well done drama.

Survivor 3: Africa - The Complete Season (2001) Review

Survivor 3: Africa - The Complete Season (2001)
Average Reviews:

I normally don't care for reviews written before a product is actually released, since they generally aren't very helpful. But how this season has not yet been released is beyond me. It may not have been very popular at the time, but if you go to just about any Survivor message board, it's clear that the fans are dying to see Survivor: Africa released on DVD as soon as possible.
I'm glad to have Palau and Vanuatu coming out later this year; I'll happily purchase any seasons they release no matter what the order. But while these seasons are good (Vanuatu is my least favorite season ever but it's still entertaining), they aren't Africa or Marquesas, two of the better seasons in my view.
I, like I'm sure most fans, feel that they should release the series in order, but if that can't happen, at least throw fans a bone here and give us the ones that we didn't just watch a year ago. Let us have the seasons we haven't seen in a long time. The sooner Africa, Marquesas, Thailand, and Amazon are released the better.

The New Adventures of Old Christine: The Complete Second Season Review

The New Adventures of Old Christine: The Complete Second Season
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This remains one of my absolute favourite comedies. It's so funny that I even laugh at reruns I've seen here. This season is, to me, even funnier than the first and in season 2, we see Blair Underwood who is not only so good looking, but also very funny too. He plays Mr Harris (a teacher of Richies) who Christine develops a crush on. That story in itself makes this season worth watching. Here is they was that the episodes pan out in season 2;
THE PASSION OF THE CHRISTINE - Christine and Richard get back together, more out of convenience than out of passion. But the guy she really has the hots for is Richie's new teacher.
THE ANSWER IS MAYBE - Christine tries to get New Christine to take Richard back, just to keep him from going after an even younger, hotter woman. And in the process, she finds a new man of her own.
COME TO PAPA JEFF - Christine freaks out when she finds out that she's dating New Christines dad - which means if they got married, she could become Richards stepmother.
OH GOD, YES - Ritchie stars asking questions about religion, after Richard and New Christine take him to church, so Christine reluctantly decides it's time to take him to church herself.
SEPARATION ANXIETY - Christine tries to help Barb when she learns she's splitting up with Pete, but Christine doesn't understand why Barb isn't more depressed.
THE CHAMP - Christine hooks up with Stan one more time. She knows that he's pathetic and she could do so much better, but there's something about him she can't resist.
PLAYDATE WITH DESTINY - (one of my favourite episodes) Christine wins a playdate for Ritchie with Mr Harris, which only complicates things for her because she has a crush on him and he can't date parents.
WOMEN AND TUITION - Christine tries to find ways in which to cut back on costs when Ritchies tuition increases.
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - When Richard forgets to complete Richie's mission project, Christine and Matthew scramble to finish in time for the deadline the next morning. Matthew is kept on hold for numerous hours waiting for the Internet text support to help with his problem.
WHAT ABOUT BARB? - Christine and Barb have a hard time agreeing on some aspects of running the 30-minute work-out gym they now own together.
CRASH - Christine and Marly have it "out" when they get into a car smash in the school parking lot.
ENDLESS SHRIMP, ENDLESS NIGHT - Christine goes to one of Mathew's parties to help her get out of her rut, and Richard tries to get Ritchie to enjoy carpentry.
LET HIM EAT CAKE - Christine takes credit for New Christine's birthday present for Richard, which causes many angry issues to arise between the two women.
SLEEPLESS IN MAR VISTA - While on sleeping pills, Christine makes a number of embarrasing phone calls she doesn't remember making.
UNDERCOVER BROTHER - Christine learns a secret about Richard's brother after an awkward kiss.
STRANGE BEDFELLOWS - After Richard tells Christine that she's setting a bad example by not taking interest in the upcoming election, Christine starts being more conscious about the environment. She tries to get signatures for a petition at a supermarket and tries to vote, although she knows nothing about the candidates.
THE REAL THING - When trying to send a dirty email about Mr. Harris (guest star Blair Underwood), Christine ends up sending it to all the parents in the school, almost getting Mr. Harris fired. Christine is also set up with an architect Tom (guest star Dave Foley) who works with Richard. Richard shows Barb (recurring star Wanda Sykes) and Matthew Richie's birth video.
FAITH OFF - Matthew helps Christine discover that Richard isn't the same irresponsible guy he was when they were married, after her irresponsible behavior causes him to lose a job.
MY BIG FAT SOBER WEDDING - Christine ruins a friend's wedding when the groom says her name while toasting the bride, and Richard tells New Christine during the reception that he doesn't want to get married again.
FRIENDS - While shadowing Ritchie, who is on a camping trip, Christine gives Richard some bad advice about getting New Christine back--which only winds up getting them back in bed together again. And Matthew discovers he may be sexually attracted to Barb.
FRASIER - Christine thinks she's pregnant after her encounter with Richard.
If you have ever seen the first season, or want a great comedy in general, this is one to buy. Julia is amazing as the New Christine and it's a fantastic show that you can see again and again. I love it.

The New Adventures of Old Christine: The Complete First Season (2006) Review

The New Adventures of Old Christine: The Complete First Season (2006)
Average Reviews:

I was so excited to find out that the first season of "The New Adventures of Old Christine" is coming to DVD! This show has a terrific cast with terrific writing that make it a very enjoyable show to sit down and watch. I think what is so endearing about this show, especially the main character Christine, played brilliantly by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, is that she tries so hard to be a normal, working mother. She is sending her son to a fancy private school while having to deal with the hilarious "Meanie Moms," who are rich snobs who look down on her for being a divorced, working woman, her ex-husband coming around with his new girlfriend, a young, sweet lady who also happens to be named Christine, and the fact that she herself does not have much in the way of what you'd call a love life. But instead of taking the usual approach of a lot of sitcoms where the characters have problems but then they are resolved within thirty minutes, we see Christine's failures. She tries so hard, and yet she manages to embarass herself, screw up, and/or put her foot in her mouth. That is what makes her endearing...she has very good intentions, but she can't always succeed, and so that makes it easy to relate to her. That is why I find the cover art so funny and so in character for her...only she could hop into her car and begin driving away without a care in the world only to have every single thing she needed to bring with her still on the roof of the car. So pick this one up, you won't be disappointed...it's a fresh sitcom with unique writing and I have no doubt that you'll not only enjoy this, but in some way, you just may be able to relate to it!

Now, there's a kick in the self-confidence: Single working mom Christine Campbell has just learned that her ex is dating a much-younger woman with the same first name. To avoid any confusion, everyone calls one woman New Christine and the other Old Christine. You can guess which is which. Julia Louis-Dreyfus' hilarious and insightful performance in the title role won fans and earned her the 2006 Emmy as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Christine struggles to hold it together as she adjusts to her new nickname, confronts the meanie moms at her son's private school, jumps back in the dating pool with a post-bikini bodÄand gets laughs every misstep of the way. You go, -old" girl!
