A friend recommended this workout video and I was a little hesitant at first as a man following women thinking it would not be enough for me, but I was WRONG!!! I was looking for a cardio routine that would increase my flexibility and this program does the trick using the bands. After just a week and a half I notice an increase in movement in my arms, shoulders and legs. I am really pleased with using the program in such a short period of time, and would recommend it.

Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work (2010) Review

Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work (2010)

"Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work" is thoroughly enjoying. She has always been outrageous and I knew what to expect. I got what I wanted - a time to laugh and cry and sometimes do both at the same time. Joan is not only a genius, but amazing in her drive and fantastic comedic timing. She thinks on her feet and not only has the guts to say what people keep deep into their psyches, she brazenly lets us look and laugh and not be afraid to peek at life's unfairness. Joan is a fascinating woman, who knows what she wants -she works constantly at 77, keeps herself on the go - I was tired watching her hectic schedule. Joan does not feel alive unless she is working - and she will work anywhere at anytime. Although she complained of not saving money for her old age, she makes plenty and spends it freely on herself and others. Her generosity to staff and thoughtful Thanksgiving dinner belie her unrelenting drive to support a lush lifestyle. She is a workaholic and has kept her brain from "rusting" out, but may "wear out" by constant travel, gigs, writing material, and never stopping trying new venues. Her plastic surgeries and botox injections are discussed as a matter of course and are part of the show business routine she accepts. At the beginning we see her without makeup, and as she is painted up and prepped it is amazing a 77 year old can look that good. She is not afraid to bare her feelings (she give background on leaving Johnny Carson show and her husband's suicide), her foibles (Am I a Diva? All comediennes are angry?) and keeps hacking away at "sacred cows" so we may laugh with her on life in blasphemous joy - it is nothing but cathartic.

Joan is exquisitely complex, smart (reads voraciously), honest, generous, kind and anything but ordinary. What a joy it is to see her full throttle on the big screen.

Aging Out (2006) Review

Aging Out (2006)

As a Guardian ad Litem who has worked with many teens I can say this documentary accurately depicts how poorly we prepare foster youth for adulthood. So many fall through the cracks of the broken system and are so likely to repeat the family cycle that brought them into the foster care system as children or youths. The states that take these children away from their parents to give them a better life need to start working on means to assure that outcome. Many of the youths in the documentary describe the devastating effects of being moved again and again from home to home. They painfully share the fragmentation of their emotional attachments to anyone who cares for them, leading to their inability to care about or for themselves.
As to the reviewer above who mentioned the extra features pieces, I think the decision as to who they could include in the main documentary was probably based on the length of time they could follow the youths in question.
The epilogue of the documentary is heartbreaking. People who are upset with the outcomes should seriously think about giving back to their community and becoming mentors, Guardians ad Litem or Court Appointed Special Advocates for our foster youth. The children in foster care need advocates.

Artfully directed by award-winning filmmaker Roger Weisberg and Vanessa Roth, AGING OUT chronicles the daunting obstacles that three young people in foster care encounter as they "age out" of the system and are suddenly on their own for the first time. Navigating the transition from adolescence to adulthood is challenging for even the most mature and privileged youth. For three teens in urban New York and Los Angeles, however, making the transition to independent living is considerably more difficult. Lacking family support, they are suddenly forced to fend for themselves with no job skills, meager financial resources, and little preparation to survive on their own. Following them as they become parents, battle drug addiction, cope with homelessness, and even end up in jail, Weisberg and Roth show how three teenagers use the resiliancy they developed "in the system" to retake control of their lives. AGING OUT is more than a dark chronicle of young people who move from foster care into the welfare, mental health, and criminal justice systems. This emotionally complex film is also a portrait of young adults struggling to overcome the scars of their troubled childhood in order to realize their dreams of independence and fulfillment. Jane Fonda: Prime Time - Fit & Strong Review

Jane Fonda: Prime Time - Fit and Strong

This video I picked up from Target the other day. It was so good to see Jane Fonda on store shelves again! She is my absolute favorite fitness instructor. I've been working out with Jane since I was a teen. Before that I used to watch my mom exercise to her on VHS. When I was a teenager her instructions of how to safely and properly exercise sunk into my mind, thus instilling lasting discipline between my mind & body. So few people know about safe and proper body alignment. I will always be grateful to Jane for re-enforcing again and again with each video of hers how crucial it is to properly perform the exercise.
In her newest video Jane is true to her style of looking out for us here at home who are trying to follow her lead. She is very considerate and compassionate. Jane has a soothing voice and really looks after the viewer. This is especially important since this video is more geared toward older folks. I am young but out of shape. I wanted something gentle and non-intimidating which would keep me moving on a day when I don't want to move. This video has delivered what I was looking for. If you are super-fit and aerobic you probably won't like this video.
Things happen in life. People get sick, develop illnesses or injuries, give birth, get off of track for whatever reason, let themselves go...This is a video for people going through life who want to keep moving, want to be encouraged to care for themselves. We won't always being doing kick-boxing, advanced aerobics or such high-impact exercise through our entire life. Real people need something else to fall back on when their energy is low or the pace of life has changed for whatever reason. This video works for that purpose.
The introduction before level 1, to my surprise made me cry. I could 100% relate with what Jane was saying about being out of touch with the body. It felt good to sit with Jane and tune in to my body and appreciate it.
For those curious, yes Jane looks wonderful! She is lean and fit and has a better physique than many young people have. You can tell she has taken good care of herself. Her muscles are well developed & shapely. Her limbs are long and lean. More than that she seems peaceful, composed, calm. Her demeanor lends me a sense of calm which I can use after a crazy day of running around.
