Jane Fonda's Easy Going Workout Review

Jane Fonda's Easy Going Workout

This video is a total head to toe workout. Excellent for beginners; people with chronic illness who need to work out daily. This video is challenging yet doable. The class is helping me cope with fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue/myofacial pain syndrome. You too may find this a rewarding class. If you need a workout to help chronic illness try this one. I love it. thanks Jane...

Jane Fonda's Personal Trainer Series: Total Body Sculpting (1995) Review

Jane Fonda's Personal Trainer Series: Total Body Sculpting (1995)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used this tape after a few months of doing Tae-bo exclusively. My muscles were SORE the day after. Which means that I had neglected them while doing Tae-bo. Now I've dropped the Tae-bo and do Jane Fonda's workouts exclusively. The moves remind me of Cindy Crawford's video. Most are really basic. Surprisingly, the back stretches are quite soothing to my achy back and has in fact strengthened my back muscles. No more back pains! After about 4 weeks, I've also noticed my arms getting leaner, not bulkier. The two alternating workouts are fast (about 20 minutes each) and basic, but it works! However, I only give 4 stars because the music is poor (don't even try to do the moves in time with the music) and overall the video is quite boring (no MTV-like sequences or exotic settings here). Nevertheless, the workouts are effective. Nice to alternate with something aerobic.

A friend recommended this workout video and I was a little hesitant at first as a man following women thinking it would not be enough for me, but I was WRONG!!! I was looking for a cardio routine that would increase my flexibility and this program does the trick using the bands. After just a week and a half I notice an increase in movement in my arms, shoulders and legs. I am really pleased with using the program in such a short period of time, and would recommend it.

Karen Voight - Pure & Simple Stretch Review

Karen Voight - Pure and Simple Stretch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one of the best stretching videos out there, it is very calming and will stretch you from head to toe.
This is one of Karen's earlier videos from 1991, you will see a much more serious Karen than in her more recent videos. I don't think she smiles once in the video, but for me it doesn't take away from a great stretching routine. The entire routine is 40 minutes, starting out with a 10 minute standing routine, then 30 minutes of floor stretching. All the stretches are held for 20-30 seconds, and Karen offers a lot of details and helpful tips for each stretch and also giving options to for deeper stretches. A towel is used to aid stretching for those less flexible. Karen has 3 exercisers with her, one of them is a man who is good to
watch for those with limited flexibility. Those looking for yoga should look elsewhere as this is athletic type stretching. But if you are looking for a relaxing stretch video, this is a good one. The music is new agey/jazz type music which suits the atmosphere well.
The DVD also offers some of Karen's walking tips, you will see a more recent Karen in this segment. There are also clips of some of her other videos featured as well.

Yoga & Pilates (2-DVD Pack) Review

Yoga and Pilates (2-DVD Pack)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just read one reviewer's comments on Louise Solomon's Yogalates DVDs (I have vols. 1&2), and strongly disagree with her assessment that it doesn't help anyone to tone up and lose weight. After using both videos over the past 15 months I've lost over 85 pounds, and have toned and defined muscles in a way that I've never experienced before, even when I played tennis and racquetball. I now understand all the hoopla about Pilates -it really does stretch and lengthen your muscles in a way that other exercises do not. I started with vol. 2 (I accidently found it at a local Walmart) not knowing anything about Louise or Yogalates, although of course I'd heard of both exercises separately. For me it was perfect, and the sessions perfectly timed and gentle enough for someone returning to regular exercise after being sedentary for awhile. It wasn't until I'd been working out with it for about 4-5 months that I found vol. 1, which is more laid-back and easier than vol. 2, but which has some moves that definitely challenged muscles in a way that I hadn't felt with vol. 2. Louise's calming voice adds a soothing dimension, and I can't tell you how relaxed I am after a workout. Alternating both videos and varying the order of each section will help to keep you from getting bored with the routines. I'm now at the point where I use them in addition to some workouts (usually in the AM when I need a faster-paced routine to get me going) on FITTV because I'm really a lot stronger now. In addition to the weight loss my entire perspective on living has improved, I've influenced other family members to become more active, and all have lost significant amounts of weight. Overall, I recommend her videos (I'm hoping to get vol. 3 but it seems it's not available in the US yet) to anyone who wants to get in shape and begin/maintain a healthier lifestyle. I haven't felt this good in 20 years - this is the best $10 I've ever spent. The rewards I've received are priceless!! P.S. Part of the concept of Yoga is going inside of oneself to find inner peace. This is probably why there is no music during the workouts (the intro./end music is very peaceful/soothing), and why the set is devoid of any potentially-distracting background. If you embrace the concept of body/mind/spirit coming together as one during your exercise session, your focus will not be on the video setting but on yourself, and the positive steps you are taking to improve your health.

Buff Moms-to-Be: The Early Workout Review

Buff Moms-to-Be: The Early Workout
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this DVD without the benefit of a review, so I felt a little vulnerable about it. I am 20 weeks pregnant. I searched for DVDs that allowed me to do Pilates while still pregnant. Something about the reviews of those videos caused me to NOT want to get one. So I got this one, and I am VERY happy with it. It definitely works your muscles, but I never felt overly strained or exhausted. It's about 40 minutes, which is great. There is a warm up, a cardio portion, and then a warm down/strengthening portion. What I like about it is the instructor is not pregnant, but she has 2 pregnant women doing the exercises with her--a woman in her 2nd trimester and a woman in her 3rd trimester. And these women will show you the modifications that are recommended for women in those stages of pregnancy. I would definitely recommend this video for someone who is interested in staying fit during her pregnancy. You need weights, a chair, and some pillows, but all can be done in your home easily.

Steffanie Lyons' Ultimate Band Workout with two Resistance Bands and Gloves Review

Steffanie Lyons' Ultimate Band Workout with two Resistance Bands and Gloves

I'm not a flexible person, but this looked like a good way into resistance band workout.
It uses gentle, flowing moves and I was able to go at my own pace, varying the resistance by moving my hands on the band. I definitely was stretching and using muscles that I ordinarily don't. And after only a few sessions am noticing improvement in flexibility. I am not as tight as I was before.
The video looks very gentle, but I find myself winded by the end.
I'd recommend this for any beginner. Just remember to keep a towel under your head or rear end as you do.

Fat Burning Fusion Review

Fat Burning Fusion
Average Reviews:

I am a big fan of Ellen Barrett's, and have been for a couple of years. My favorite routine of her's, up to now, was the one she created for FitTV's "All Star Workouts" called Zen Sculpt. My next favorite, also from "All Star Workouts" was her Slow-robics. This new DVD, "Fat Burning Fusion" is from Ellen's Buff Girl Fitness productions, and does not disappoint! It is a great workout from start to finish, and is very challenging and tough if done correctly. You will get out of it what you put in to it. Her focus is not always on what is moving, but what isn't moving.
A little note about Ellen's style...she isn't for those who want a bulky physique. She is more about elongating and strengthening the muscles for a lean and feminine dancer's body. Her routines blend Plilates with dance, with mind/body integration. The entire program works all areas of the body--the powerhouse, the heart center, and the limbs. So, you burn calories, build muscle, and stretch through each move smoothly and gracefully. You will feel this the next day--especially in the legs and glutes.
Working out with Ellen is not easy, but it is gentle to the body. If you want hard-core cardio, with lots of jumping around and kick-boxing, she's not for you. If you want to look like Cathe Friedrich, Ellen won't get you there. However, if you want to be toned, flexible, long and lean, she's your gal. Done on a regular basis, you will see results. This is Ellen at her very best-great cuing, easy explanations, and fun!

Side note*** This DVD uses more of the traditional poses like down dog than many of the other Singh and Brett dvd's that I have.

Keeping Fit in Your 50s 3-Pack (Aerobics / Strength / Flexibility) Review

Keeping Fit in Your 50s 3-Pack (Aerobics / Strength / Flexibility)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are three DVDs in this set: Flexibility; Strength; and Aerobics. All of the exercises are taught by exercise physiologist Robyn Stuhr, and model Cindy Joseph joins in and provides occasional commentary on the exercises, e.g. "This feels really good," or "I can really feel this stretch." Cindy also demonstrates a yoga routine near the end of the Flexibility DVD, although it is a bit hard to follow because there is little narration, just directions printed on the screen as the two women go through the routine. I couldn't help but notice that when I'm in the 'down dog' position, it's difficult to read the directions on the screen. Someday soon, I'll just have to memorize the yoga segment.
I've been going through these DVDs for about a month now, one per morning, along with a couple of other exercise videos (a Pilates workout and a Tai Chi video) to round out the week, plus walking in the afternoon, and I've already begun to notice some improvements in my posture and flexibility. There are some deep bend knee exercises on the Strength and Aerobics DVDs that I can't do--when I was going through physical therapy for my knees, my therapist recommended against them--but Robyn Stuhr usually supplies an alternate exercise for those of us who have experienced problems with various joints. Keeping fit in my 50s is definitely different than it was in my twenties--no more jogging, for instance, and these DVDs take our changing bodies into account. Robyn even gives a brief introduction to Kegels during one of the strength routines.
Each DVD begins with an introduction, body basics, workout tips, and a section on 'know your muscles' before it gets into the core routines. Once you've watched these sections a few times, you will probably want to skip directly to the core routines via the menu. Each DVD closes with some upbeat, feel-good advice from Lisa Callahan, M.D., author of "The Fitness Factor," and Lillie Shockney, R.N., author of "Breast Cancer Survivors' Club."
Equipment needed: a stretchy Pilates body band; straight-backed chair; hand weights; and a thick book or step to stand on for two of the strength exercises. The exercises don't take up too much floor space, and I only have to move one easy chair out of the room in order to do all of the routines without banging into anything.
The "Flexibility" DVD runs for 81 minutes, with about 65% of the time spent in exercise.
The "Strength" DVD runs for 74 minutes, and the "Aerobics" DVD runs for 65 minutes with about the same percentage of exercise time versus the 'talking heads' segments.
The background music is soothing, in contrast to the whumpa-whumpa stuff found on many exercise tapes. The one minor annoyance other than the silent yoga routine was the occasional tricky camera angle. It's sometimes hard enough to position myself correctly for a particular exercise without having the camera cocking sideways for a shot of the beautiful Cindy, who didn't even start modeling until she was forty-nine. More power to her, but this is not a modeling session, so next time, keep the camera steady. Then the rest of us can figure out what she's doing without having to mentally rotate her position through a couple of dimensions!

I hurt my back, was unable to fold forward, or sit. When given the go ahead by my doctor to move again, I found the Core Fusion Pilates DVD, and the Core Fusion Body Sculpt DVD, to be the only workouts that I could do without increasing my injury. In fact, it helped do the exact opposite and helped HEAL my back. After 6 weeks, I went from having a severe condition to being clean and clear. I did not take any drugs. I went to the chiropractor regularly, iced my injury, and did Core Fusion, and I feel better than ever!!! Not to mention I lost inches from my waist and hips, and am the strongest, leanest, and most flexible I have ever been! This dvd is AWESOME and empowering!

Exhale: Core Fusion - Body Sculpt Review

Exhale: Core Fusion - Body Sculpt
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first thing that impressed me about this video is its intelligence. It's a thinking person's workout. Exercises are strong on authentic Lotte Berk since that was a significant part of this couple's background, with additions from Pilates, yoga and classical weight training. They do an excellent job of talking you through the exercises, explaining what it will do for your body, thereby keeping you motivated from a positive place, which is so much nicer than the commonly used negative motivational techniques where somebody is screaming you through a breakneck pace. They have you concentrate on how your body is feeling the exercise, stopping momentarily if you need to, then picking it up again - instead of counting monotonous repetitions for you. This approach is so much more pleasant and sensible. The workout is muscle toning, organized as interval training. Interval training has been proven by medical research to be much preferred for promoting fat loss and heart reserve capacity, instead of long term cardio. The pacing promotes the mind-body connection and focus, which reminds me of my ballet training from years ago, or hatha yoga. You have a chance to breathe and think during the exercises, without feeling additional stress due to the exercising. Much appreciated after a hectic day at work.
The video had a warm, intimate, personal trainer feel to it with the husband and wife team demonstrating the exercises together and instructing by means of a voiceover. They alternated showing the advanced version of an exercise and clearly indicated which person you should watch if that's the level you wanted. Setting is what I call "New Age living room," lovely décor, warm earthtones, water feature, and subdued lighting, plenty of camera shots from various angles. Music so unobtrusive I didn't even notice what it was, although there is a music only option in the special features after you get tired of the instructional. My husband really liked the fact that a man was showing the exercises also - funny how the same movement can look a little different on a man. He also liked the fact that it was a husband and wife team instead of a group of women. We're pressed for time, like to do things together, and this video fills the bill nicely. No more scheduling TV time for mutually exclusive workouts. Top quality production, first class all the way. I think this delightful couple with impressive credentials has set a new standard for fitness videos, and I look forward to more offerings from them in years to come.

Viniyoga Therapy for the Low Back, Sacrum & Hips with Gary Kraftsow (2009) Review

Viniyoga Therapy for the Low Back, Sacrum and Hips with Gary Kraftsow (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This DVD focuses on issues of the lower body, specifically the lower back, hips, and sacrum (the other DVD in this series focuses on the upper body). It differs from other yoga media offerings in that it contains a strong educational component in addition to the practice element. Also, the practices offered on the DVD are designed for rehabilitation and strengthening, and thus they are more similar in feel to a physical therapy session than to a yoga class.
The main menu of this DVD consists of four separate segments: 1) Understanding Back Pain, 2) Technique Workshop, 3) Therapeutic Practices, and 4) Special Features. The Technique Workshop provides the opportunity to study individual postures in greater depth. The Viniyoga Therapeutic Practices offer three complete practice segments tailored to meet different needs as described below. (Note: the DVD also provides bonus MP3 audio versions of each practice.)
1.Lower Back Therapy (23 minutes). Gary recommends that you begin here, as this is the most gentle practice. The postures are performed entirely on the floor and provide very mild stretching of the lower back area.
2.Hip Therapy (31 minutes). This practice, while still gentle and centered on floor postures, focuses more on the hips. Unlike more traditional hip-opening sequences found in other yoga practices, the goal here is to stretch the hips from four perspectives (front, back, and each side).
3.Strength and Stability (32 minutes). This practice is the only one on the DVD to contain standing postures, and thus the intensity level is slightly higher than the other two. Gary notes that it is designed to build long-term health and fitness in the low back, sacrum, and hips.
The practices feature a single student working on a mat against a rather sparse white set, with Gary providing instruction via voiceover. Most people are likely to find the practices rather dry--Gary's voice is a big monotone and repetitive, and there's little "fun factor" here. However, these are therapeutic in nature, and as such, they are quite effective. Although I personally didn't get much out of the first two practices--mainly because the low back and hips aren't a problem area for me--I was pleasantly surprised by the third, as it nicely stretched out not only my lower back but also my upper back, shoulders, and entire torso. This DVD would be useful for virtually anyone who is at risk for lower back issues, from those who work at physical labor to those with more chronic conditions. I definitely recommend Viniyoga Therapy for Lower Back, Hips, and Sacrum as an excellent tool for alleviating pain and promoting health in the entire lower back area.

Viniyoga Therapy for the Low Back, Sacrum and Hips features short, simple therapeutic yoga practices carefully designed to alleviate pain and promote health in the low back, sacrum and hips. For the first time ever on DVD, benefit from the expert guidance of Gary Kraftsow, one of the world's leading yoga therapists. Pure Barre: Ballet, Dance & Pilates Fusion (2008) Review

Pure Barre: Ballet, Dance and Pilates Fusion (2008)

I love barre workouts. I own a lot of DVDs devoted to this method and it's very effective, especially on the lower body. Like another reveiwer stated, the set and the production quality is bad. Really bad. It looks like something a high school AV Class threw together for a class project. The set is dark and ugly, the camera work is inadequate, cutting off body parts, and failing to show different angles to help with proper form. The instruction, is so-so, although I felt form pointers and modifications were a bit lacking.
If you're looking for really good, thorough instruction and a little more refined production quality, check out Lotte Berk, or if you can get your hands on some Bar Method DVDs, definitely do that. This isn't a bad DVD for a first try, there is just lots of room for improvement.

The Pure Barre Technique (PBT) is the fastest, yet safest way to change your body. PBT fuses dance, Pilates and Lotte Berk exercises while utilizing the ballet barre to create the most intense and effective 55-minute workout that exists. The results of PBT are: flat abs, thin thighs, a lifted seat, toned arms and sculpted backs. PBT is an intelligent exercise technique - each strengthening section of the workout is followed by a stretching section in order to create strong, long, lean muscle without the bulk, while increasing range of motion. PBT will not only quickly transform your body, it will clear your mind, help you focus and contribute to a happy and healthy life. All you have to do is this DVD 3 times per week and your body will change - it is that simple.

10 Minute Solution: Prenatal Pilates Review

10 Minute Solution: Prenatal Pilates

After a shaky first trimester, my doctor gave me the ok to exercise again. I started shopping for a good, fun workout DVD. I tried the "Buff Moms-to-be" workout - don't bother with that one. Way to wimpy. Next, I got the "The Perfect Pregnancy Workout" DVD. I love that workout. By far my favorite. However, there isn't much core work involved, so I thought I'll get a pilates DVD, so I can alternate workouts. So, I ordered "Pilates during Pregnancy." That workout is way too brutal. It made me hurt all over, and not in a good way. Finally, I ordered the "10-Minute Solution Prenatal Pilates" DVD. Oh, how I love this workout. The whole body gets a workout. Every muscle in your body is working. The workout is just right - not too wimpy and not too hard. Very doable. You'll feel great afterwards. The instructor is very pleasant, and the background is very inviting. The music is there, but not overpowering. There are five 10 minute sections: Standing Pilates, Core Pilates, Pilates for Buns & Thighs, Total Body Pilates, and Pilates for Flexibility (my favorite). You can select the "Play All" feature, or you can create your own workout by selecting only the sections you want to do. I recently started some physical therapy for my sciatica, and the therapist commented on how great my muscle tone is, especially in my core. I told her about this DVD, and she told me to keep it up, since it seems to work well. I'm now 34 weeks pregnant, and I will continue to use this DVD and "The Perfect Pregnancy Workout" as long as I can.
A number of people have raised some concerns about some of the exercises on this DVD that are done laying on your back. First of all, the amount of time you spend on your back is extremely short. A couple of minutes at the most. I spend more time laying on my back during ultrasounds. Also, the physical therapist gave me some exercises to do at home for my sciatica, and those exercises have me laying flat on my back for 3-5 minutes, so it can't be that bad. Also, while you are laying on your back, during this workout, you are moving around, so I could imagine that prevents blockage of blood flow. But, you need to do what you feel comfortable with. I would definitely recommend this DVD for a great pre-natal workout.

Yoga For Weight Loss for Beginners (2007) Review

Yoga For Weight Loss for Beginners (2007)

Having done yoga both with videos and in a class, I found this video to be a step above most other yoga videos. It is arranged in three sections, each having multiple workouts. The first section is designed for beginners, with one section teaching a basic set of poses, and two sections with flow-style practices of varying length. That is, the poses flow from one to the next for continuous, slow movement. The pacing is great - slow enough to allow good form in each pose, but fast enough to allow you to move along with the breath, as you breath in and out. However, it is clearly not "remedial," and includes poses requiring some flexibility, balance, and strength (e.g., downward-facing dog with one leg raised, as well as some balancing poses). If someone lacks flexibility or strength, I'd definitely recommend starting instead with "Essential Yoga for Inflexible People," which a friend tells me is perfect for beginners. The second section (the one I use the most) is a little more challenging and also has several different flow-style practices that vary in focus (arms, legs, total body) and length. It's surprising how much your heart gets beating and you really feel your muscles working. They are the ideal every-day workout. The third section is an interesting twist - yoga along with light weights or a resistance band to get even more strength training work. Again, there are several different practices that vary in focus and length. Very clever and fun. The instructions on how to work in each pose are extremely well done. Usually, the biggest downside to learning yoga from a video rather than a well-conducted class is that you can't get individualized instruction, and so you can learn the poses incorrectly and not get the full benefit of the practice. However, the instruction is so well-done that I found this video to instead help me refine and improve my use of the various poses. Finally, the filming is simply beautiful, with a gorgeous ocean landscape. This is quickly becoming my favorite yoga video!

The Kettlebell Goddess Workout: How to Achieve and Maintain a Divine Body with the World's Most Effective Tool for Weight Loss, Strength, Endurance and Flexibility Review

The Kettlebell Goddess Workout: How to Achieve and Maintain a Divine Body with the World's Most Effective Tool for Weight Loss, Strength, Endurance and Flexibility

I just completed my first Kettlebell Goddess workout (Odyne -- the Goddess of Pain -- yeah, I'm a masochist) and loved it!
The DVD design is intelligent & user friendly. It's setup as interactive menus which allow freedom of choice. You can choose from the Goddess workouts (which either focus on cardio or strength) or a build-your-own workout by combining different exercises and Goddess workouts. There's even a pdf file that contains examples for your weekly exercise routines which allow you to chose between cardio & strength.
The Goddess workouts are a complete workout which include a warm-up and a cool down/stretch. The build-your-own workouts include elements from all of the workouts, plus there are additional exercises.
Granted, you have to buy the kettlebells, but this is still a great price for the volume of exercises available. Kettlebells are pretty reasonable until you get up to the really heavy ones. I'm starting with a 4 kg/9 lb kettlebell I got at a local sporting goods shop for $20. It's the traditional black iron Russian version, not the colorful, vinyl coated American version.
The instruction is easy to follow, and the exercises are demonstrated well. I just hate when they pan to the pretty smiling model's face and I can't see what she's actually DOING, which is the whole point of the darned thing! That doesn't really happen with this video. One of the things that seperates this from the pack of most workout DVDs is that all three are Kettlebell instructors. One is even a medical doctor. They aren't model/actresses who answered a casting call ad and know little to nothing about the exercises.
Another feature which seperates this DVD from the pack is NO CHEESY MUSIC! Andrea has omitted the usual, generic workout music in favor of simple instruction. Much of the time, there is no speaking either, just breathing. She says once you get the hang of the exercises, feel free to play your own music. I went ahead and played mine and was able to hear her and the music. So much better than that Goddess awful synthesizer music commonly found in workout videos (pardon the pun)! =P
