Caribbean Workout: Core Pilates (2005) Review

Caribbean Workout: Core Pilates (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently picked up this program after really enjoying the previous Caribbean Pilates/Pilates Plus DVD's (which I've already reviewed on Amazon).
This set contains three twenty-two minute self contained workouts that were formerly on the Caribbean Workout Show. Being from a TV show there are commercial breaks which fade in and out, sometimes more smoothly than others. Still, in spite of a few rough spots in that regard, these programs are really some of my favorite Pilates based programs along w/ the Caribbean Pilates and Pilates Plus.
Their length makes them easy to fit in, the price is super low and you get a lot of workouts for that low price.
The first workout has a abs/back focus and it's very well sequenced. Jennifer Tilley, who leads the workouts w/ Shelley Mcdonald as the "student", alternates between Abs exercises and Back extension exercises. Jennifer Tilley has an interesting approach to varying the "classical" Pilates exercises as well as the way she sequences them. For me it works very well and keeps things fresh.
The second segment is a mix of Yoga type poses and Pilates exercises. It starts standing and then moves down to the mat. There's a nice mix of Ab core and back extension exercises as well a mini Sun Salute where you go from cobra into child's pose (she refers to these as up dog and down dog, but they are actually cobra and child's pose).
This segment is very much a blend of Yoga and Pilates, more so than any of the other Caribbean workouts that I have.
The third segment is primarily focused on the lower body and features a fairly extensive side lying series.
It starts w/ the hundred to warm up and then moves into the side lying position.
The one thing that I wanted to point out is that Jen Tilley first does 4 or so exercises on the right side, then switches to the left side and does the same exercises. BUT then what happens is that she continues on the left side and starting with the Développé on does a whole bunch more exercises and ends w/ small leg circles.
At that point after some gentle hip stretches, then she goes to the other side, starts with the Développé and then completes the leg series on the right side. The thing I don't like about this is that even though the same exercises are eventually done on both sides they are not done in a symmetrical order which means the left side is really maxed out by doing them all in a row while the right side gets to rest and then complete the series after the left side is done.
Fortunately, if one is aware of this and wants to make it symmetrical, what you can do is, switch back to the right side when she starts the Développé and then switch back to the left side when she does the Développé on the right side. In spite of that workable imperfection, this is an enjoyable and fun DVD to work with that definitely works the areas intended. I gave it five stars in spite of the few imperfections because overall I think it delivers what it promises and does so at a ridiculously low price!
I enjoy the personalities of the two teachers, the spontaneity of the way they interact and the scenery as always is beautiful. There is always nice gentle music during the Pilates sessions which enhances the overall atmosphere of the sessions.
If you are looking for a more "classical" Pilates approach I would highly recommend Hilary Burnett's Intermediate program. If you've never done Pilates before I would recommend Stott Basics program for excellent detailed instruction. I have heard great things about the Hilary Burnett Beginner program but unfortunately don't have that one.
Ana Caban has some nice beginning and intermediate programs as well which are based more on Joseph Pilates approach.

Karen Voight - Slim Physique (1998) Review

Karen Voight - Slim Physique (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While this is an interesting concept, will it work for you?
Do you only have 30 minutes a day for a workout? Then, this might be a great solution. Karen has created a variety of mix 'n match workouts. All you do is select the day of the workout. If you are used to working out for an hour, you might have to combine two days.
Monday (Cardio & Lower Body Strength): This is an interesting combination of small cardio segments that seem to increase in intensity. You end the workout with a short floor routine and some stretches.
Tuesday (Yoga Strength): Karen shows you how to get the most out of each move. She will work your body into a finely tuned fitness machine. Compared to other 45-60 minute yoga workouts I have, this seemed to be a very quick workout for me, so adding 40 minutes of walking will take this to a new level. You can do the walking before the yoga and it will warm your muscles so you can go deeper into the stretches.
Wednesday (Cardio & Abdominal Strength): Aerobics workout in which you start with a warm-up routine, then move into more energetic moves. I thought the "bunny hops" were kinda cute. It is like using a jump rope without the rope. Karen is a bundle of high energy and takes you from simple moves to complex routines that not only challenge your body, you have to stay very aware and the footwork is very creative. The aerobics workout is followed by floor routines for abs. Some stretching at the end.
Thursday (Upper & Lower Body Strength): You start with the cardio workout and then work your way into using weights while standing. Lots of upper body work and then you go to the mat and continue working out your upper body. The cool down has some lower body stretches.
Friday (Abdominals & Yoga Stretch OR Yoga Strength): You start with Abdominals and have to get to you mat very quickly. In fact, you might want to be flat on your back with the remote in hand before you even start. Karen seems to be famous for jumping right into the workout, so this is something you have to be aware of. There is no explanation before each workout. The explanations are all during the workouts and the instruction is refined and you make the most of each move. The Yoga workout is on an oriental carpet and is quite a beautiful routine due to the carpet, the music and the lighting, wood floor, etc. This is my favorite section on the DVD. Karen's black cat-suit type outfit also sparkles. This section of the workout is sort of magical and relaxing. I'd like to see more workouts like this! An entire DVD of stretching routines would be bliss. (If you love this section of the workout, you might also enjoy YOGASCULPT.)
Saturday (Cardio & Upper Body Strength): Again, you start with an aerobics routine. You will notice the "swimming" from a workout she did with Elle Macpherson in "Your Personal Best." Karen definitely seems to have a lot of "signature moves" which make her routines easier to do in the long run. Your body knows how it is supposed to move and it is very satisfying to find moves you have learned in other Voight workouts. Karen is quite creative and always seems to be in a state of constant change because she makes up new moves in addition to the old ones, so you really have to focus. Her workouts are as much for the mind as the body. Cardio Circuit Energy Boost is followed by the weight workout you did on Thursday.
Sunday (Yoga Stretch): I started with this routine. It has a nice flow and there are plenty of creative poses. The stretches do seem designed for the very slim as there are some poses in which you literally twist yourself into a pretzel. Never fear, there are only a few of those poses and you can work your way to that level of flexibility.
Tools: hand weights, yoga mat, two blocks and optional foot stool.
Karen presents each workout in a no-nonsense style. She gets right to working out. So, have all your equipment ready to go. You won't have time to go find your yoga mat, weights or block once you start the workout. For the most part, the footwork wasn't too fancy, but there are a few times I just went back to walking until I could figure out the routine. If you are used to aerobic workouts and want a new challenge, Karen will give your mind a workout too. She has a friendly instruction style and a pleasant voice.
Karen Voight has always been an inspiration to me. Her workouts really motivate me. If you enjoy this workout, you might also want to try: Ultimate Circuit Training. It also has B.L.T. on a ball workout, so you don't have to buy the additional DVD.
"Sleek Physique" is a fun DVD to use every now and then for a complete week. It gives you a break from trying to figure out which workout you are supposed to be doing. Karen does the organizing for you. This is perfect to take with you on vacation so you don't get out of your workout routine.
This DVD has previews of other workouts and links to Karen's
website so you can purchase exercise equipment. Throughout this workout, Karen has a workout partner.

I love Ravi & Anna. They were the best introduction to yoga I've had. I have several of thier dvd's.

Although this workout is wonderful, it's freakin' HARD! If you are already a yoga guru it may not be so challangeing. However, if you are like me, overweight and trying to get in shape or new to yoga, this workout is a killer! Don't get me wrong, I love it. Just be prepared to sweat!
Side note*** This DVD uses more of the traditional poses like down dog than many of the other Singh and Brett dvd's that I have.

YogaWorks for Everybody: Body Slim Review

YogaWorks for Everybody: Body Slim

In addition to YogaWorks Beginners' AM/PM, and YogaWorks Fit Abs DVDs, YogaWorks has the BodySlim DVD whose focus is on weight loss. After trying out the other two DVDs, I was excited to work out to this DVD. This is an intense and challenging workout that increases body conditioning and strengthens the core. During the workout I could feel all of my muscles shaking and my heart rate going up. I like to challenge myself during this workout, but afterwards I feel so energized that it is all worth it. I am convinced that if I keep on working out to this DVD, I will continue to lose weight. I usually bring this DVD with me when I travel to help me maintain my workout routine and use it as an alternative to going to the gym.

Body By Bethenny with Bethenny Frankel Review

Body By Bethenny with Bethenny Frankel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Even though I am a fan of the series, as well as a fan of Bethenny, I always go into a purchase with reservations, but I was hearing good things about the program and I decided to buy this.
The DVD has a lot on it. The total work out length of her progam is just under an hour, and the instruction is led by Kristin McGee, with Bethenny following along with interjections and her dry wit here and there.
In the yoga segment which is about 40 minutes, the poses are explained with nice detail, and modifications are given when needed, and even a tip here and there if you are feeling abititious. The setting looks like a loft apartment and the music is just a new age style, typical for this kind of workout.
On occassion there will be a flash of words...a word bite if you will, that will tell you the benefit of what you are doing.I have several yoga dvds, and I do enjoy this instuctor quite a bit, just for the fact of her details during the instruction, and her giving you information in down to earth manner. She is very encouraging, and is always looking at yoga as an experience. The second part is a series of weights. Its about ten minutes in length. This is also taught by Kristen, and it's pretty basic exercises, but I think again it's solid instruction on how to do them and correct form. I think it could be a bit longer, but if you feel ambitious, you can always play it twice. I think keeping it at ten is good for someone that doesn't have a lot of time but you still want to do something. The third is called the booty bonus. Its very short, roughly about 5 minutes, but taught by Kristen with the same informative instruction. This doesn't require any weight so you can do these anywhere. There are a couple of bonus footage pieces. There's a cooking segment and it gives the instruction of skinnygirl spinach artichoke dip. There's also two workout segments. They are called Pilates for Beginners and Exhale: Core Fusion Pure Abs and Arms. They are brief, but you can always incorporate those pieces into the workout as well, or do them separately.Overall, I really like this DVD. Since it just came out today, I can't speak of the long term results just yet. I can say that given my experience with yoga videos I can assure you it's complete workout. Challenging but not so intimidating that a beginner would feel defeated. That to me is very important as if you feel that way you will not want to do it again. Anyway, please do give this program a try. You will not be dissappointed!Update: I have done this video all this week since getting it. Again I can't speak of the long term results just yet, so I am going to tell you how I am feeling currently.
I am pleased to say each time I do this DVD I enjoy it more and more. Even with the more challenging poses, I am finding myself having more strength each time to complete them and I will have to say there a sense of pride when I do that.
I am sore all over, particularly in the thighs butt lower abs and shoulders...and that's a good thing.
Anyway, just wanted to give that feedback. Will provide more in several weeks and hopfully by then I will be able to give you my results. :-)Update #2 I am still loving this DVD. I think it's because it is so challenging. so I am not bored by any means.
I am getting better with the moves, and Bethenny is spot on when she says with balance, some days are better than others and that's so true for me.
I am glad she made it this level, otherwise I know I would tire of it easily and toss it aside. That won't happen with this DVD, that's for sure!

Mandy Ingber's Yogalosophy Workout DVD Review

Mandy Ingber's Yogalosophy Workout DVD
Average Reviews:

When I saw that Jennifer Aniston's yoga instructor was putting out a DVD I couldn't wait to purchase it - who doesn't want to look like Jennifer Aniston? I have been doing yoga regularly, both at home and with an instructor for about 6 years and am always looking for new yoga workouts. What a disappointment this DVD is!
First, the cover promises 2 complete 30-minute workouts and one longer 55 minute workout. What it doesn't tell you is that the 2 30- minute workouts are identical except that one provides instruction and the other does not. In addition, the longer workout is just the same 30-minute workout with a more traditional sun-salute series stuck onto the beginning.
The 30 minute workouts are really not yoga at all - I felt like I was back in my college dorm room doing Jane Fonda! The sun salute series is impossible to follow unless you are actually looking at the screen which is obviously not practical. Also, the workout is very disjointed - there is a lot of standing around while Mandy explains what's coming up. There is absolutely no flow.
I guess if I'm going to look like Jennifer, I'm going to have to do it alone!

Yoga For Weight Loss for Beginners (2007) Review

Yoga For Weight Loss for Beginners (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having done yoga both with videos and in a class, I found this video to be a step above most other yoga videos. It is arranged in three sections, each having multiple workouts. The first section is designed for beginners, with one section teaching a basic set of poses, and two sections with flow-style practices of varying length. That is, the poses flow from one to the next for continuous, slow movement. The pacing is great - slow enough to allow good form in each pose, but fast enough to allow you to move along with the breath, as you breath in and out. However, it is clearly not "remedial," and includes poses requiring some flexibility, balance, and strength (e.g., downward-facing dog with one leg raised, as well as some balancing poses). If someone lacks flexibility or strength, I'd definitely recommend starting instead with "Essential Yoga for Inflexible People," which a friend tells me is perfect for beginners. The second section (the one I use the most) is a little more challenging and also has several different flow-style practices that vary in focus (arms, legs, total body) and length. It's surprising how much your heart gets beating and you really feel your muscles working. They are the ideal every-day workout. The third section is an interesting twist - yoga along with light weights or a resistance band to get even more strength training work. Again, there are several different practices that vary in focus and length. Very clever and fun. The instructions on how to work in each pose are extremely well done. Usually, the biggest downside to learning yoga from a video rather than a well-conducted class is that you can't get individualized instruction, and so you can learn the poses incorrectly and not get the full benefit of the practice. However, the instruction is so well-done that I found this video to instead help me refine and improve my use of the various poses. Finally, the filming is simply beautiful, with a gorgeous ocean landscape. This is quickly becoming my favorite yoga video!

Elle Make Better Series: Elle Workout Yoga Review

Elle Make Better Series: Elle Workout Yoga
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is likely to appeal to those seeking athletic yoga as well as those who only want "purist" yoga. The issue with some athletic yoga done by instructors who do not specialise in yoga is that the lack of "yoga depth" is apparent to purists. Tara Stiles, young though she is, seems to have a mature appreciation of yoga as an exercise form. She is devoid new-age woo-woo talk (at least on this DVD) - this is a yoga "workout".
The DVD has two short routines - great as a tack-on or for those with limited time for yoga. Routine 1 is 20 minutes and is more flexibility oriented, but with some strength thrown in. Routine 2 is more challenging - it works on strength and has a heart rate elevation effect and takes 25 minutes.
What I liked:
-> Tara Stiles is spectacular to watch at yoga. She is limber, tall, and it seems like her body was designed for yoga. I find her on-screen personality very likeable.
-> The flow is pretty different from the typical yoga vinyasa workout. No sun salutations. She starts Routine 2 with a one minute plank. Near the end, you find yourself in plank again and she makes you hold it again for one minute. When I do planks I am mentally counting down seconds. She cues you to take ten deep breaths. Planks seem a whole lot easier when you count down 10 rather than 60.
-> She manages to cover a lot of ground in a limited time. She works in crow, bridge, wheel, shoulder stand, plough, planks, bow, cosmic dancer, half moon, garland, down-dog variations, splits and some standing poses if you do them both end to end. A cool balance flow is incorporated (one legged, standing) too.

Factors to consider:
-> Moves fast at times. If you like to take time to find your alignment, there will be opportunities in some but not all poses.
-> Plank and down dog intensive, if these bother your wrists
-> She over-uses "go ahead and.." and "from here...". For example, if she wants you to move from your current pose into a lunge, instead of saying "Move into lunge", she will say "From here, go ahead and move into lunge"....and then...."From here, go ahead and step your other foot back".... Since you are constantly moving from your current pose into another, you need a high tolerance for the phrases "from here" and "go ahead"!
I have no idea who the girl following along (Brooklyn Decker) is, and did not notice her much. I find Tara Stiles likeable from her youtube clips and on this DVD. She seems very promising among the younger yoga instructors.

Trudie Styler's Warrior Yoga (2009) Review

Trudie Styler's Warrior Yoga (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok, so I did this dvd this morning and all I can say is "interesting". This dvd is not your typical vinysa yoga class. It isn't challenging but you do get a good stretch without breaking much of a sweat, at least I didn't.
Trudie and her yoga, pilates, dance teacher lead the class outside in lush surroundings. The dvd has an unusual flow in that everything is done on one side (about 24 minutes) and then repeated on the second side. I felt like I had hit repeat segment on my dvd player. The sequence is as follows (might have missed some but basically this is it):
- tadasana to chair, reach out palms and fall forward to standing forward bend; rise to tadasana. Repeat 3x
- child's pose to snake thru to cobra to camel with hands on ankles or floor behind you. Repeat 2x
- cobra to one handed camel. Sweep around to other side and repeat 2x.
- Down dog to one legged split. alternate legs. Repeat 2x.
- one legged split to pigeon.
- Down dog to warrior variation to wide angle pose variations.
- down dog to triangle to extended side angle. 2x
- runners pose (knee on ground) to warrior pose variation to pyramid pose 2x
- standing one legged split to almost seated twist. 3x
- seated twist. one legged twist. bound forward bend. one legged forward bend. wide legged forward bend.
- hands underneath legs holding feet butterly. holding big toes, wide legs in air butterfly.
- plank to downdog to standing to tree.
- Repeat entire sequence on second side.
There is no savasana. No inversions. No backbends except moving camel. No abs. The focus is on the hips and by the time you repeat to the other side, your hips really open up.
The class just ends with a standing centering instruction and then the credits start rolling.
What I liked: The class has a nice dance like feel to it. All the poses flow together. This is a good class for beginners to advanced beginners. It is being sold as intermediate class. The only thing challenging is that you need flexibility in your hips. Otherwise all of the poses are doable. With the camel sequence, I put blocks by my feet to rest my hands on. I would use this class on days when I just want to stretch and not work too hard. I think it would be a great class for those 50 or older. Younger yogis may not be challenged enough. The teacher, in voiceover, has a very nice, soothing voice with precise instruction.
What I didn't like: The camera angles annoyed me in that I couldn't see all of Trudie's body. The camera focused on the top half of her body. Some poses make you face away from the screen and since I didn't know the sequence that well, I had to adjust my feet to see the screen. The class was too simplistic for me. It had great potential but for me it fell short. She could have included more poses, however, as I said earlier this is a class when you just want to stretch and not work hard. Also when the class ends it should go back to the menu instead of rolling credits. The menu has 2 meditations and bonus material which I haven't viewed. Lastly, the introduction is part of the class and should have been separate. As such you have to fast forward to beginning of the class.
There are two classes, 50 minutes and 20 minutes. The express class leaves out the camel and doesn't repeat the poses. It is the same as the 50 minute class but shorter.
All in all I think is was a good first attempt at a yoga dvd. I only gave it 3 stars because I just don't know what the shelf life will be for me before I give it away. I could do everything without much effort. Nothing to grow into.
UPDATE: I just did this dvd again for the 2nd time. This time I knew the routine and was able to enjoy it more with the pretty guitar music. I also did both meditations. One by Trudie and and one by yoga teacher D'Silva. They were a bit talky, but otherwise relaxing.

Dance the Chakras Yoga Workout - Ana Brett & Ravi Singh ***With the New MATRIX Menu Option*** Review

Dance the Chakras Yoga Workout - Ana Brett and Ravi Singh ***With the New MATRIX Menu Option***
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although I actually took a Kundalini yoga workshop with instructors Ana Brett and Ravi Singh in 2005, this was the first of their DVDs that I tried, as my home practice tends to consist of more traditional forms of Hatha yoga. To my surprise, I enjoyed this DVD very much, and I expect that I will now include some Kundalini as part of my home practice.
Unlike their live workshops, Ana and Ravi's DVDs feature Ana only on screen, with both Ana and Ravi providing instruction via voiceover. Dance the Chakras is broken down into two main sections, a Kundalini yoga sequence and a series of short guided dances. The DVD chapter menu breaks down as follows (I've added approximate times and brief details):
Introduction
Tune In (just under 3 minutes)--includes ong namo guru dev namo chant
Yoga Set 1 (9.5 minutes)--stomach grinds, ragdoll (fast head-to-knee pose performed repeatedly), crow (a type of squat, not an arm balance) with Breath of Fire [BOF], butterfly with forward bend, bridge with BOF; includes brief pauses to meditate throughout
Yoga Set 2 (16 minutes)--moving legs in and out while lying on back, rolling, chest expansion (arms raised at right angles move in and out) with BOF, arms held at 60 degrees, shoulderstand with BOF, plow, rolling, neck rolls, cat/cow sequence, baby pose (child's pose) with arm mudra and 3-part breath; includes brief pauses to meditate throughout
Shake Your Chakras:
Tribal Dance (5 minutes)--arms opening, surfer dips (rock down and back up), tribal dance (pulse arms down, work your way up)
Hippy Hippy Shake (3.5 minutes)--hips shake side-side-side-up, hip rolls up to one side, side to side sways
Funky Temple Dance (3.5 minutes)--free form, with side sweeps and other large arm movements
Dance of Power (4.5 minutes)--punches, victory dance, sweep kicks
Rock Your Soul:
Heart (2.5 minutes)--includes spinning
Trance Dance (4 minutes)--freeform dance with sat-a-nam wahay guru chant
Deep Relaxation (3 minutes)--relaxation pose
Chakra Mudra Chant (5 minutes; also called mantra meditation)--repeated arm movement pattern while singing ap sahae hoa-suchay da sucha doa-har har har
Closing Prayer (1 minute)--pray for self, other, world peace
Although I don't have much experience with Kundalini yoga, many of the postures included in the yoga sets were familiar, and I enjoyed the mix of fast repetitions with more slow relaxed holds. Ana and Ravi talk about which chakras are being worked via each exercise, moving from the lower body to the top of the head. I was more wary of the dance section: although I do enjoy some dance workouts, I tend not to like more freeform workouts. Surprisingly, I found that these dances were really enjoyable, particularly the Hippy Hippy Shake, with all of its fun hip swings and sways, and the Dance of Power, which had a bit of a kickboxing flavor. Ana's moves are sensual and free, and although I did try to follow her, I didn't feel pressured to copy her exactly either. The chakra mudra meditation was another pleasant surprise that left me feeling very relaxed and focused.
The entire workout comes in at about 60 minutes. However, the DVD also includes some great pre-sets (premixes) which give you several different shorter workout options. These include Shake Your Chakras, 30 minutes; Chakra Light, 30 minutes; Sweat and Glow, 45 minutes; and Angel Tango, 20 minutes. However, you might find that you enjoy the DVD so much that you want to do the entire thing! I think that fans of Ana and Ravi will definitely love this DVD, but I also would recommend it for those new to Kundalini who approach the practice with an open mind and spirit.

NOW FEATURING THE DESIGN YOUR OWN WORKOUT MATRIX MENU OPTION!!!All I can say is, wow! This isn't your mother's yoga. Dance the Chakras Yoga Workout features two 30 min. sessions. starting with a complete 30 minute Kundalini Yoga routine, invigorating, dynamic, and profoundly effective, just like Ana & Ravi's other workouts. The 2nd set is not your usual "Trance" fare, but an energetic, pulsating, sequence of mostly lead movement routines. This section is pretty aerobic and somewhat intense. Although the moves seem simple, those who don't have a dance or aerobic, etc., background can easily participate. (This DVD allows the user to pre-program their own workout.) Dance 1 is Tribal Dance. The others feature Funky Temple Dance, Dance of Power, and Heart Dance. The last two segments can only be described as blissful. Tom Carden's music on this one is hands down the best music on a yoga DVD. Like all their recent offerings, Ana & Ravi have broken away from the yoga pack with this exciting, innovative DVD.

Jane Fonda's Workout: Daily Yoga with Tara Stiles Review

Jane Fonda's Workout: Daily Yoga with Tara Stiles
Average Reviews:

This workout is 55 minutes long, and unlike many DVDs, it includes all the basic yoga poses. Lots of down dogs, planks, and forward folds. Also twists, lunges, boat moves, pigeon, tree, and more. The pace is more of a flow yoga with fairly limited holds of poses. The instructor gives very clear instructions and the moves are well captured on film. Jane Fonda (age 73) recently endorsed this and her other new workout videos based on having different needs as your body ages. Direct quote from print: ""I'm on this crusade to get older people out of the chairs, off their couches, moving in a way that's safe, easy and very doable even if they've never done it a day in their lives. It's never too late." This workout is WAY more challenging than this quote would suggest. I'm age 55, in good health, a yoga practioner for 3 years, and lifelong exerciser and I needed child pose 35 minutes in to this video! Having said that, I look forward to many more tries and working up to the full length challenge.

Jillian Michaels: Yoga Meltdown Review

Jillian Michaels: Yoga Meltdown
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm starting from the standpoint of years of yoga practice and having taught Pilates professionally for seven years: needless to say, the boot camp style of "Biggest Loser" isn't exactly what I would go looking for in a yoga tape.
My initial Pilates-teacher bias notwithstanding, this is actually pretty interesting. It takes standard yoga poses and adds repetitions to the movement. What's really smart about it is three things:
1.) The repetitions are movements that don't put a lot of pressure on major joints--you're not moving through the joints in such a way that there is a lot of force, so this isn't likely to cause injury. Specifically, what you're not doing, is rolling through shoulder joints repeatedly, with all your weight on your shoulders, as in most Ashtanga yoga--which does tend to cause injuries.
2.) It's interval training. What that means is that your heart rate goes up and down a lot. Your body, in response, will default to a higher level of calorie burning and oxygen use, so this is a pretty good way to increase metabolism and what we think of as "lung capacity."
3.) It's difficult enough that you don't feel like you're wasting your time. Each workout is only 30 minutes, but it's difficult enough that, if your goal that day is fitness, you're definitely getting your money's worth.
Some negatives: it's filmed on a really bright gym set, which is a little difficult to watch; Jillian doesn't actually do all the poses; sometimes it's hard to see the beginner model when you need to.
Who this is for: experienced yoga folks who want a different kind of more athletic short practice; anyone wanting to add gym-based yoga to their workouts.
Who this is not for: if you have bad wrists, this might be undoable. Your knees also should be good enough to get up and down from the floor without difficulty.
However, this is a fairly safe, more difficult yoga dvd.
Yogi Eric Schiffman has been quoted as saying, "The point with yoga, is to do it a lot." If having another instructor in your dvd rotation, one who isn't airy-fairy, and overly emotional, for days when you just can't go there, then this is worth adding to the mix.

Yoga Inside Out: Go Deeper (2007) Review

Yoga Inside Out: Go Deeper (2007)

The instruction on this DVD is outstanding. I have been practicing yoga for 10 years and am often frustrated by the poor quality of the instruction on many yoga DVDs (of which I have tried quite a few). This one is refreshingly different, however, in its quality. The setting/graphics are a bit dull (I like to pretend I'm not in my living room practicing when I'm in my living room practicing!) but otherwise this is a great yoga DVD. I especially like that the sections are clearly separated so you can do whatever you're in the mood for/have time for on that particular day, or go to the instructional sections for more information. Overall an excellent choice for a guided home yoga practice.

Yoga Inside Out - Go Deeper focuses on body mechanics and optimalalignment to maximize the benefits of yoga practice and expandstrength and flexibility at the intermediate - advanced level.

Created by Paula Tursi, Founder and Director of NYC-based Reflections Yoga, the program focuses on awareness of the mechanics and dynamicsof the spine to deepen the benefits of yoga practice by fully developing the body's potential for balanced spinal elongation, extension, andthe rotations found in a wide range of yogic asanas. The program also teaches a deeper approach to hip and shoulder opening through correct alignment of the spine.

Paula's lesson in yoga body mechanics emphasizes the correlation between the neck and the lower back and teaches balancing the dynamic alignment of the spine. We tend to move from the more mobile parts of the spine - neck or lower back - leaving out the thoracic spinewhich results in loss of depth and range ofmotion. We become vulnerable to referred nerve pain such as sciatica, headaches, or disc problems.

Approaching thethe body as finely-tuned instrument, Paula offers an 80-minute yoga practice built on developmental progressions of asanas anddesigned to enhance body awareness and unlock it's hidden potential. She focuses on the fact that truly effective andfunctional movement or asana starts first from the inner body, then radiates out, assisted by breath and balanced alignment.

Throughout the practice, Paula and two assistants demonstrate different levels within the intermediate-advanced range, and provide variations for different levels of fitness and flexibility.

A superb method fortaking your yoga practice to a new level,Paula's program is great for body conditioning and weight-loss.

Lilias AM & PM Yoga Workouts for Seniors Review

Lilias AM and PM Yoga Workouts for Seniors
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I watched Lilias when she first was on TV in the early 70's. It was my first experience of yoga. She was great then, even pretty sexy. This was motivating as I thought then if I did these poses, I'd be more "hot" like Lilias. Once I did the yoga though, it wasn't just about being sexy, it was about feeling wonderful.
Now she's created a DVD for people with limited capacity re balance and strength. I would say the average person in their 60's or 70's, who had no yoga experience, would be happy with this. I must add I have only watched the first part-morning yoga. As it was not challenging for me, I haven't watched the rest yet. However, my husband who is 61 and has some coordination and balance problems, and no yoga experience, did the first part with me and really enjoyed it, as did I. Lilias just radiates happiness and you can hardly not enjoy it even if the poses are modified. She makes it really slow and easy and gives hints and clues of how to enjoy it no matter where you're starting from. Just by being there and doing the asanas with you, she shows you how it feels when life is wonderful and how the yoga experience, done often and with concentration, helps you to find that.
She's still the cute looking girl, now aged like all of us, but genuinely in love with life and yoga. If you're feeling down, this experience will lift you up and keep you there for days. Lilias's tenderness, joy, and love cannot be ignored. Thanks, Lilias, from the bottom of my heart. You are the angel of our boomer generation.

The Biggest Loser: The Workout - Weight Loss Yoga (2008) Review

The Biggest Loser: The Workout - Weight Loss Yoga (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Great Yoga DVD, especially for those new to yoga. I've had a good handful of yoga classes and my husband's had a few. We both really benefit from Bob's instruction, particularly on form. It's one thing to say, "keep your back straight," or "make sure you watch your form," but Bob instructs as if you've never had a yoga class in your life, which is good--both for newbies and those of us who aren't experts yet. He actually shows you what good knee alignment looks like. Or tells you how it should feel. I agree with one of the reviewers that it's a little awkward (okay, a lot awkward) to be in a yoga pose and have to look up at the TV, but that's really the same as being in class--I would have to look at an instructor to see what's going on sometimes--but after a week or two of doing this, you get the hang of it and know what to do.
The BEST part of the Biggest Loser videos are the interactive menus so you can select what kind of workout you want to do. What an AWESOME idea! Finally! Someone helps me cut out the stuff I don't need or let's me build a longer workout and it plays exactly how I selected it.
And hey, if you're a dude, you'll like this because Bob leads the session. It's not just for girls. (And not just for skinny girls either.) Besides, there's none of that swirly yoga-ish, indian flute music with perfectly carved bodies flawlessly moving from pose to pose. It's basic instruction (with light background music), and you see the other participants (past BL contestants) make mistakes along the way just like most of us do when we're taking a yoga class. So what if you put your right leg in the air when everyone else puts up their left. That's what I love about this DVD! While I'm sure they spent a lot of "takes" shooting the DVD, they didn't aim for absolute perfection. Hey, life isn't perfect and I've yet to have a perfect yoga class. The fact that I got my tail out of bed to even do this each morning is as much perfect I can expect right now.
Yes, there's a lot of "plank," which is actually good for weight loss yoga. I have to admit that my arms were killing me during a lot of the warrior 2 poses, but I turned to my husband and said, "Just think, in a couple of weeks this will be so much easier for us!"
ps: Bob's Biggest Loser Boot Camp is fun too!

Crunch - The Perfect Yoga Workout: The Joy of Yoga & Fat-Burning Yoga (2001) Review

Crunch - The Perfect Yoga Workout: The Joy of Yoga and Fat-Burning Yoga (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Crunch has put together two yoga workouts that work well for beginners and beyond. Both are taught by Sarah Ivanhoe, a calming yet energetic (for yoga) instructor. These are non-mystical yoga tapes, which is nice if you haven't done yoga before. No meditation or cosmic anything. She teaches a group class, and some modifications are shown by class members.
The Joy of Yoga is a well planned workout that is a great intro to yoga, or a nice cooldown after a longer cardio or weight workout. It is relaxing and energizing, so you can do it any time of day.
Fat Burning Yoga is tougher, more like a high beginner workout. It is not so tough that one should be wiped afterwards, but one will definitely feel worked out. The pace moves, but not too quickly. I don't know how much Fat-burning this really accomplishes, but it will definitly burn some calories, and work out kinks at the same time.
The DVD interface is well planned, and it is very easy to go through each ot the two programs as written. They are also broken into chapters, so mixing between the two is possible, as it putting together a long yoga workout.

""Upbeat, athletic-style yoga class of basic standing and floor postures."" Shape Magazine Two complete yoga workouts led by a friendly, down-to-earth instructor. They both feature a medley of classic yoga poses (e.g. downward facing dog, plank, warrior, cobra, triangle and mountain pose) ""Joy of Yoga"" provides the improved flexibility and relaxation benefits of traditional yoga without the intimidating attitude. Sara's unusually laid-back style makes it unusually easy to do (e.g. ""if your knees are doing this, just flop them out"" or ""now just kinda wiggle your fingers""). Her emphasis is always on enjoying the movement, not perfecting each one. It has more energetic, upbeat music than most yoga videos. The second program, ""Fat Burning Yoga,"" also features classic yoga moves. Sara's solid cuing and non-mystical style makes it an effective and exceptionally yoga workout. And by helping you achieve a balanced lifestyle and a deeper body-awareness, it provides a key element in weight-loss success (but it's really too slow to immediately burn much fat...). It ends with a short, but intense, segment of traditional ab-focused floorwork. Bright, colorful, airy set. ©1997 & 2001. (80 min.). Note: VHS version is only the ""Fat Burning"" program; it does not include ""Joy of Yoga.""Amazon.com description

Power Yoga - Total Body Workout (1999) Review

Power Yoga - Total Body Workout (1999)
Average Reviews:

I have been practicing yoga regularly for about three years, and found this dvd to be a wonderful addition to my practice. Most of the poses are simple enough so that they can be attained by beginners, however, the length of the practice and the quantity of standing poses makes for a vigorous workout. This one is not for everyone however, I was a professional athlete and continue to stay in good shape, and I found myself (after the first couple of practices) to really feel the workout in my back. If you have not done a lot of yoga, you may want to start with a less strenuous tape, however if you like to feel a deep stretch and don't mind a few sore muscles, this is the yoga tape for you.
