Bollyrobics Dance Workout Review

Bollyrobics Dance Workout
Average Reviews:

This DVD comes in several languages: English, Hindu, Spanish, French, Japanese & music only (same beat for all menu choices).
It has 3 different dances, Maahi Ve, Chaiyya Chaiyya. Each section is 30-35 min each w/a warm-up, step by step, the 3 min dance performance itself & a cool down. The warm-ups & cool downs are all the same for all 3 dances.
From their website:
Songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Bombay Dreams" and the Bollywood film "Kal Ho Naa Ho" (Indian Love Story -- Tomorrow May Never Come) featuring Shahrukh Khan provide the music to 3 dances, each with an increasing level of difficulty and unique style which varies from playful and sensual to dynamic and powerful.
The woman on the dvd, Julia Casper, is the one dancing. At the dance portion, it's just her 3x with computer graphics.
Warm-up - uses basic dancing you will use to get you into it before the step by step portion.
Step by step - shows you the moves, she does break it down, such as only showing the veil first, then the veil & feet & then finally adding the hands. She even does it at a slower pace for faster moves before going normal speed. Each move is done at least 4x if not many more times. She gives great body movement cues, not just counts in 8s.
Cool down - is nice, added head rolls like the warm up, but also adds some standing fwd bends, lunges to really stretch.
I enjoyed Julia's presence, the breakdown was easy to follow & I felt more aware of my body to move better. I don't like this style of dancing as much as Latin or belly dancing or even hip hop, but there were a few moves I thought were great. Julia's style actually encouraged me to get into it more then I would have.
I took off 1 star because of lack of music during the step by step which made it drag on & boring (music only option will come in handy if replay it at later date). Though practice repetition is great & needed for any dance instruction, with the slower down & breakdown, there did not need to be so much, especially on moves that would not get the heart rate up. If these were aerobic moves, that would be great as exercise, but most were easy & required little physical effort.
After completing the step by step once, I will only replay the dance portions only for aerobic workout. I would love for Julia & production to put out more dances of different styles with my suggestions in the future.
Their site is bollyrobics com & all 3 dances are on youtube in all the languages.

Veena and Neena: Bollywood Blast - The Ultimate Bollywood Dance Workout Review

Veena and Neena: Bollywood Blast - The Ultimate Bollywood Dance Workout
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Veena and Neena have done a lot of workout videos and it's always great to see the twins together. At 1st glance, I thought the twins were working together on Bollywood Blast but was surprised that Veena was leading the workout with 2 other dancers. Veena did say that Neena helped to design the moves. That disc lasted for about 26 minutes. Indi-Hop is also included (which I already have) and lasts for about 34 minutes (including instruction time).
I prefer Indi-Hop because it includes 3 dance routines with different levels of intensity. Bollywood Blast is great for the obliques with the different twists and leg lifts. I did have to add another workout since this one is so short. Doing the 2 discs together would give you more of a complete workout and plenty of yoga stretches.

Hemalayaa: Bollywood Burn (2007) Review

Hemalayaa: Bollywood Burn (2007)
Average Reviews:

I just did this workout and I must say that I sweated bullets. You can see a trailer at the acaciacatalog web site.
Setting: Theatre stage with teacher and two dancers, 1 woman and 1 guy. This time the backup dancers are quite good and look like they are enjoying the choreography.
workout: the dvd is divided into 3 workouts, each with its own warm-up, learn the steps, routine and cool down. The cool down is brief for segments 1 &2 in the event you want to do segment 3. The steps are easy and fun. BE WARNED, MANY OF THE STEPS ARE HIGH IMPACT. I have bad knees and I had to modify the criss cross jumping jacks, half jacks, hop turns and jumps. No modifications are shown on the video. However, I am aerobically out of shape and I still got my heart rate up doing low impact.
Music: This is bhangra hip hop music. The music is different for each segment. The teacher is in voice over and she is much louder than the music. There is a music only option and when you hear it without her talking, it is quite good and rhythmic.
Overall: A good workout that is edited and choreographed much better than her bollywood workout dvd. There is also a free dance special feature with the 3 dancers clowning around. Next time I do this, I will use the music only option as it is pretty easy to visually follow. the production quality is very good and the steps are in beat with the music. The camera loves Hemalayaa and she and her dancers are a joy to watch,

The Cardio Samba Workout (2008) Review

The Cardio Samba Workout (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just finished doing this workout and it was intense! The workout sections are:
1) samba basic steps - She teaches front foot samba, side to side samba and going back first samba. She teaches it first without music and counts for you. This is excellent as you can get the count and the sway of the hips. I have been doing brazilian dance for years and this is the first time I had someone break it down with precision. She then teaches it with music and at half time and regular time.
2) workout tutorials - She breaks down the workouts (1-4) at half time.
3) Transition samba steps - These are steps you will do between the workouts to keep your heart rate up.
Next is the warm-up. If you have ever taken a dance class, the warm-up will be familar to you. It is a slow warm-up, not very exciting but it gets the job done which is to warm up the muscles.
Then there is the workout which is broken into 4 sections. She does each one slow then up to tembo with a transition step in between each workout. The workouts are on separate chapters in the event you need to repeat one. The steps are not complicated but are fast and challenging as you will be changing directions and turning. I suggest that you have a pretty large dancing space. The last section, 5, is all of the workouts strung together w/o the transition steps at warp speed (up to tempo).
For my first time through I got about 1/2 the steps up to tempo. The samba is very fast and tiring. I sweated up a storm!!! Unless you are in excellent shape and/or a sambanista, you will not get this at tempo the firt time around. That's good because this dvd challenges you so that each time you do it you get a little bit more and a little bit stronger.
The last section is a short but sweet cool down.
Quenia is joined by 3 dancers 2 of whom were on her last dvd. The setting is a soundstage with hard wood floors. (not good on thick pile carpet) The music is very good BUT could have been a little louder. Thankfully, once the workout starts she doesn't talk alot except to cue you.
Over all I loved this dvd and will do it again and again and one today I hope to be able to do part 5 straight thru without stopping. And since workout 5 is its own chapter, you can put your dvd player on repeat and do it several times as you become stronger. I must say that I had the priviledge of taking her class at the Alvin Ailey dance school in NYC and she is the sweetest person and a petite dynamo. Obrigada Quenia

Dance the Chakras Yoga Workout - Ana Brett & Ravi Singh ***With the New MATRIX Menu Option*** Review

Dance the Chakras Yoga Workout - Ana Brett and Ravi Singh ***With the New MATRIX Menu Option***
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although I actually took a Kundalini yoga workshop with instructors Ana Brett and Ravi Singh in 2005, this was the first of their DVDs that I tried, as my home practice tends to consist of more traditional forms of Hatha yoga. To my surprise, I enjoyed this DVD very much, and I expect that I will now include some Kundalini as part of my home practice.
Unlike their live workshops, Ana and Ravi's DVDs feature Ana only on screen, with both Ana and Ravi providing instruction via voiceover. Dance the Chakras is broken down into two main sections, a Kundalini yoga sequence and a series of short guided dances. The DVD chapter menu breaks down as follows (I've added approximate times and brief details):
Introduction
Tune In (just under 3 minutes)--includes ong namo guru dev namo chant
Yoga Set 1 (9.5 minutes)--stomach grinds, ragdoll (fast head-to-knee pose performed repeatedly), crow (a type of squat, not an arm balance) with Breath of Fire [BOF], butterfly with forward bend, bridge with BOF; includes brief pauses to meditate throughout
Yoga Set 2 (16 minutes)--moving legs in and out while lying on back, rolling, chest expansion (arms raised at right angles move in and out) with BOF, arms held at 60 degrees, shoulderstand with BOF, plow, rolling, neck rolls, cat/cow sequence, baby pose (child's pose) with arm mudra and 3-part breath; includes brief pauses to meditate throughout
Shake Your Chakras:
Tribal Dance (5 minutes)--arms opening, surfer dips (rock down and back up), tribal dance (pulse arms down, work your way up)
Hippy Hippy Shake (3.5 minutes)--hips shake side-side-side-up, hip rolls up to one side, side to side sways
Funky Temple Dance (3.5 minutes)--free form, with side sweeps and other large arm movements
Dance of Power (4.5 minutes)--punches, victory dance, sweep kicks
Rock Your Soul:
Heart (2.5 minutes)--includes spinning
Trance Dance (4 minutes)--freeform dance with sat-a-nam wahay guru chant
Deep Relaxation (3 minutes)--relaxation pose
Chakra Mudra Chant (5 minutes; also called mantra meditation)--repeated arm movement pattern while singing ap sahae hoa-suchay da sucha doa-har har har
Closing Prayer (1 minute)--pray for self, other, world peace
Although I don't have much experience with Kundalini yoga, many of the postures included in the yoga sets were familiar, and I enjoyed the mix of fast repetitions with more slow relaxed holds. Ana and Ravi talk about which chakras are being worked via each exercise, moving from the lower body to the top of the head. I was more wary of the dance section: although I do enjoy some dance workouts, I tend not to like more freeform workouts. Surprisingly, I found that these dances were really enjoyable, particularly the Hippy Hippy Shake, with all of its fun hip swings and sways, and the Dance of Power, which had a bit of a kickboxing flavor. Ana's moves are sensual and free, and although I did try to follow her, I didn't feel pressured to copy her exactly either. The chakra mudra meditation was another pleasant surprise that left me feeling very relaxed and focused.
The entire workout comes in at about 60 minutes. However, the DVD also includes some great pre-sets (premixes) which give you several different shorter workout options. These include Shake Your Chakras, 30 minutes; Chakra Light, 30 minutes; Sweat and Glow, 45 minutes; and Angel Tango, 20 minutes. However, you might find that you enjoy the DVD so much that you want to do the entire thing! I think that fans of Ana and Ravi will definitely love this DVD, but I also would recommend it for those new to Kundalini who approach the practice with an open mind and spirit.

NOW FEATURING THE DESIGN YOUR OWN WORKOUT MATRIX MENU OPTION!!!All I can say is, wow! This isn't your mother's yoga. Dance the Chakras Yoga Workout features two 30 min. sessions. starting with a complete 30 minute Kundalini Yoga routine, invigorating, dynamic, and profoundly effective, just like Ana & Ravi's other workouts. The 2nd set is not your usual "Trance" fare, but an energetic, pulsating, sequence of mostly lead movement routines. This section is pretty aerobic and somewhat intense. Although the moves seem simple, those who don't have a dance or aerobic, etc., background can easily participate. (This DVD allows the user to pre-program their own workout.) Dance 1 is Tribal Dance. The others feature Funky Temple Dance, Dance of Power, and Heart Dance. The last two segments can only be described as blissful. Tom Carden's music on this one is hands down the best music on a yoga DVD. Like all their recent offerings, Ana & Ravi have broken away from the yoga pack with this exciting, innovative DVD.

The Bollywood Dance Workout with Hemalayaa (2006) Review

The Bollywood Dance Workout with Hemalayaa (2006)
Average Reviews:

I know it is a workout dvd, how can it be fun!? But really, Hemalyaa (and please dont ask me how to pronounce that name. I have no idea, sadly.) approaches the workout as playtime and makes the individual segments very enjoyable. The time just seems to fly by which is especially weird for an exercise dvd!
The dance "playtime" is exactly what you would expect to see in a Bollywood film. It combines hip-hop, basic belly dance, and just plain fun body movement to form a style that looks execptionally easy and fun- when Hemalyaa does it, not me. I probably look like a floundering chicken. But I dont care! I still had fun and it was a definite workout particulary in the upper thighs.
The choreography goes fast but is pretty well explained and they always redo all of the movements, so even when you feel like you have no idea what you are supposed to be doing the dancers will suddenly go back to moves that you have already mastered. Sometimes it is just fun to watch them dance for a minute- and I say that not just because I was slacking for that minute!

Dance off the Inches: Hip Hop Party Review

Dance off the Inches: Hip Hop Party
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own a number of dance workouts and this is my favorite so far. There is a step guide in a separate chapter, which can be used to learn the steps in half time. This is great because Jennifer does not have to slow down the tempo of the workouts to teach the steps in half time. The step guide is a fabulous idea and makes this DVD superior to most dance workout routines on the market. Because of my familiarity with dance DVD's, I only had to do the step guide once, but it was very helpful.
During the workouts, Jennifer still introduces each step with the feet first, followed by adding the arms. And she does the typical build of multiple steps for each routine. To learn the routines, I focus on learning the steps first and then I add the arms in later attempts.
Jennifer is an excellent instructor. She does a great job of providing good advance cues for step changes. She also cues "left or right" that is the opposite of her left or right (mirror form), so it is easy to follow her lead.
Potential customers may be put off by the fact that this is a hip hop dance routine. Never fear. I really liked mixing things up from the usual Latin and Jazz routines. But, be ready for a lot of hip action.
I am at an age (54) and weight where my knees do not tolerate a lot of abuse. I was still able to do almost all of the routines or I could easily modify what Jennifer was doing to be a little more knee friendly. (No frog stretches for me!)
All in all, I highly recommend this DVD for people who want some exercise with a lot of variation and a high fun factor.
