8 Minute Workouts (Arms / Abs / Buns / Legs) Review

8 Minute Workouts (Arms / Abs / Buns / Legs)
Average Reviews:

8 minute arms are fast and easy, and you can do it without weights or with weights (or soup cans if you don't have weights). 8 minute legs are easy, and you use your chair or couch, perfect for the beginner. 8 minute abs are a bit difficult, definetly work your way into those. 8 minute buns are not for the weak kneed, you definitly need an exercise mat. All the workouts are so fast, it doesn't even feel like your working out.

Power Abs Medicine Ball Workout with Gin Miller Review

Power Abs Medicine Ball Workout with Gin Miller
Average Reviews:

"I was not impressed with the Power Abs Medicine Ball workout. I think I was overcharged for the video and I had to buy the medicine ball seperate. What I did not realize, was that my medicine ball came with a 24 minute workout that is awesome! The total cost of medical ball and workout video from Walmart was $11. It is way better than the Gin Miller's Power Abs workout DVD that I bought. I should have bought the ball first and not wasted my money on this DVD."

Gin Miller's Power Abs Medicine Ball Workout introduces a new challenge in strength and conditioning with this dynamic workout. Designed to optimize benefits in cardio-respiratory fitness and reactive strength, this circuit interval format maximizes results in one time-efficient workout. This total-body workout alternates short bursts of easy-to-follow cardio (marches, jogs, runs and jacks) with integrated exercises that work multiple muscles groups all at the same time.

This program, specifically designed to improve overall fitness conditioning, adds a new variable in resistance training with the addition of light to moderate medicine balls. Adding the dynamics of medicine balls not only improves strength, coordination and balance, but also targets all the muscles of the core. This type of reactive training leads to better posture and every-day function - and a firmer, tighter mid-section.

Total Workout Time - 36 minutes

Mix & Match Menu - direct select specific exercises

Novice - less than or up to 4lbs Beginner - less than or up to 6lbs Intermediate - less than or up to Advanced - less than or up to 10lbs Elite Athlete - less than or up to 12lbs

*Due to the dynamic nature of this workout, exercisers should be pre-conditioned with a strong foundation in resistance exercise, balance training, and core stability. As with any new program or training mode, it is important to view the safety guidelines and watch the workout in its entirety prior to attempting these exercises. Anyone considering this type of training - including but not limited to pregnant women and especially those with a history of back, hip, spine or any other joint issues - should consult with their health care provider to determine if this program or training is appropriate for their fitness goals.

Keeping Fit in Your 50s 3-Pack (Aerobics / Strength / Flexibility) Review

Keeping Fit in Your 50s 3-Pack (Aerobics / Strength / Flexibility)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are three DVDs in this set: Flexibility; Strength; and Aerobics. All of the exercises are taught by exercise physiologist Robyn Stuhr, and model Cindy Joseph joins in and provides occasional commentary on the exercises, e.g. "This feels really good," or "I can really feel this stretch." Cindy also demonstrates a yoga routine near the end of the Flexibility DVD, although it is a bit hard to follow because there is little narration, just directions printed on the screen as the two women go through the routine. I couldn't help but notice that when I'm in the 'down dog' position, it's difficult to read the directions on the screen. Someday soon, I'll just have to memorize the yoga segment.
I've been going through these DVDs for about a month now, one per morning, along with a couple of other exercise videos (a Pilates workout and a Tai Chi video) to round out the week, plus walking in the afternoon, and I've already begun to notice some improvements in my posture and flexibility. There are some deep bend knee exercises on the Strength and Aerobics DVDs that I can't do--when I was going through physical therapy for my knees, my therapist recommended against them--but Robyn Stuhr usually supplies an alternate exercise for those of us who have experienced problems with various joints. Keeping fit in my 50s is definitely different than it was in my twenties--no more jogging, for instance, and these DVDs take our changing bodies into account. Robyn even gives a brief introduction to Kegels during one of the strength routines.
Each DVD begins with an introduction, body basics, workout tips, and a section on 'know your muscles' before it gets into the core routines. Once you've watched these sections a few times, you will probably want to skip directly to the core routines via the menu. Each DVD closes with some upbeat, feel-good advice from Lisa Callahan, M.D., author of "The Fitness Factor," and Lillie Shockney, R.N., author of "Breast Cancer Survivors' Club."
Equipment needed: a stretchy Pilates body band; straight-backed chair; hand weights; and a thick book or step to stand on for two of the strength exercises. The exercises don't take up too much floor space, and I only have to move one easy chair out of the room in order to do all of the routines without banging into anything.
The "Flexibility" DVD runs for 81 minutes, with about 65% of the time spent in exercise.
The "Strength" DVD runs for 74 minutes, and the "Aerobics" DVD runs for 65 minutes with about the same percentage of exercise time versus the 'talking heads' segments.
The background music is soothing, in contrast to the whumpa-whumpa stuff found on many exercise tapes. The one minor annoyance other than the silent yoga routine was the occasional tricky camera angle. It's sometimes hard enough to position myself correctly for a particular exercise without having the camera cocking sideways for a shot of the beautiful Cindy, who didn't even start modeling until she was forty-nine. More power to her, but this is not a modeling session, so next time, keep the camera steady. Then the rest of us can figure out what she's doing without having to mentally rotate her position through a couple of dimensions!

Celebrity Fit Club: Boot Camp Workout Review

Celebrity Fit Club: Boot Camp Workout
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a big fan of boot-camp style workouts and this is definitely a new favorite! You can pick between a 30-minute or a 50-min workout and between dance/pop and alternative/rock background music. The workout is in 30 second intervals: 30 seconds of marching, jogging, running, or jumping jacks alternating with a targeted exercise). The marching/running portions are broken into 3 "gears." As the workout progresses, the gear increases. Be forewarned: this workout is NON-STOP!! Absolutely no breaks (actually, the marching gear might feel like a break, but just wait 'til you start running!!)
The moves are basic and easy to follow. There's also a modifier for beginners (that ACTUALLY does real modifications!)
Harvey might be an acquired taste for some. I personally find him motivating and his military style barking somewhat comical but if you don't like feeling as if someone is shouting orders at you, you might not like his personality. He is very blunt ("I don't mind and you don't matter."), doesn't sugar coat anything ("Get off your fat wide butt."), and might even seem a bit insulting (he keeps calling Gian, one of the exercisers, "Gyland" throughout the workout, asks him what his name is but keeps calling him by the wrong name--kind of becomes a running joke) but Harvey can be pretty funny and actually says a kind word or two to his background exercisers.
One downside is that some of the camera angles can get pretty crazy but the moves really are soooo easy to follow that it pretty much makes up for it. (But be advised modifiers: there is one exercise that is almost complete before you see what the modified version is--but only once.)
INITIATION: A 2 1/2 minute "pep talk"/how the workout program works
30 MINUTE WORKOUT:
Warm Up: March in place to marching combo (march wide-low-forward-up-down-back-up-in), twists and high knees, shadow jabs, cross jabs, and upper cuts, stretches (calf, hamstring, quad, groin, and back stretches; "kung-fu balance" and ankle rotations)
First Gear: Marching
Jumping jacks, scissor jacks, side leaps, "Beat Those Boots" (squats but low enough to touch your shoes), side squats, step back lunges, single leg squats
Second Gear: Light Jogging
Knee pumps, Jab Jab Kick A-- (just regular jab punches)
Third Gear: Jumping Jacks
Jab Jab Kick A--, Upper-cuts
Third Gear: Regular Jog/Running
Push-ups (3 down, 1 up count), push-ups (1 down, 3 up count), one-leg burpies, crunches, bicycle crunches, two count leg lifts, jack knives, back extensions (a.k.a "supermans")
Cool Down: Downgrading from running to jogging to marching. Neck rolls, shoulder rolls, tricep, lat, and chest stretches, seated groin stretch, lying hamstring, lower back, quad stretches, "preying mantis" (a.k.a "cobra"), and child's pose
50 MINUTE WORKOUT (A 20-min continuation of the 30 minute workout, picks up after the back extensions):
Third Gear: Regular Jog/Running
Jumping Jacks, suicide jacks, suicide side leaps (regular side leaps w/ longer strides), jump squats, "Beat Those Boots", "Lunge with a Switch", One-legged squat with a reach, knee pump with a jab, suicide push-ups (stabilizing on one arm while tapping the opposite shoulder then push-up)
This last four sections don't follow the alternating jog/targeted exercise pattern but go straight from one exercise to the next. After the last exercise, you go into a third gear jog/run:
1. Upper-cuts, slow high knees, regular push-ups, body-builder
2. Double jab kick a-- (front and side jabs), jumping jacks, planks
3. Crunches, bicycle crunches, two count leg lifts, "Hello, Dolly" (crossing legs), plank
4. Back extensions with a Latin pull-down
Cool Down: Same as 30-min workout.
BONUS FEATURE: Interviews with Harvey, Dr. Ian Smith, and Dr. Linda Papadopoulos

I am happy with my purchase. Each workout is roughly 30 minutes each. They are broken down into a warm up, two different routinues using upper and lower body together with cardio, and a cool down/stretch. The cardio is a lot of jumping (think jumping jacks, etc.) What I really like about the workouts is that they are time efficient. I feel like I got a workout in 30 minutes and she combines upper and lower boday together. Maybe I'm crazy but I am starting to see a difference after 7 workouts. If you liked Jillian on the Biggest Loser, you'll like her on the DVDs. Her personality is the same.
Why I gave the DVDs 4: There are no demos of the exercises, so if you are not familiar with the exercises in her book (Winning By Losing) you might want to watch the DVDs before you do them or to see what the modified version of the exercise is. I believe she mentions that in the intro as well. Also, there a lot of jumping. I read in another person's review that that can be bad for joint problems, so something to consider.
Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase. I would recommend this to a friend and I will probably buy it as a gift for someone in the future.

Jillian Michaels: Yoga Meltdown Review

Jillian Michaels: Yoga Meltdown
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm starting from the standpoint of years of yoga practice and having taught Pilates professionally for seven years: needless to say, the boot camp style of "Biggest Loser" isn't exactly what I would go looking for in a yoga tape.
My initial Pilates-teacher bias notwithstanding, this is actually pretty interesting. It takes standard yoga poses and adds repetitions to the movement. What's really smart about it is three things:
1.) The repetitions are movements that don't put a lot of pressure on major joints--you're not moving through the joints in such a way that there is a lot of force, so this isn't likely to cause injury. Specifically, what you're not doing, is rolling through shoulder joints repeatedly, with all your weight on your shoulders, as in most Ashtanga yoga--which does tend to cause injuries.
2.) It's interval training. What that means is that your heart rate goes up and down a lot. Your body, in response, will default to a higher level of calorie burning and oxygen use, so this is a pretty good way to increase metabolism and what we think of as "lung capacity."
3.) It's difficult enough that you don't feel like you're wasting your time. Each workout is only 30 minutes, but it's difficult enough that, if your goal that day is fitness, you're definitely getting your money's worth.
Some negatives: it's filmed on a really bright gym set, which is a little difficult to watch; Jillian doesn't actually do all the poses; sometimes it's hard to see the beginner model when you need to.
Who this is for: experienced yoga folks who want a different kind of more athletic short practice; anyone wanting to add gym-based yoga to their workouts.
Who this is not for: if you have bad wrists, this might be undoable. Your knees also should be good enough to get up and down from the floor without difficulty.
However, this is a fairly safe, more difficult yoga dvd.
Yogi Eric Schiffman has been quoted as saying, "The point with yoga, is to do it a lot." If having another instructor in your dvd rotation, one who isn't airy-fairy, and overly emotional, for days when you just can't go there, then this is worth adding to the mix.

Richard Simmons - Disco Sweat Review

Richard Simmons - Disco Sweat
Average Reviews:

This is a lot like Sweat and Shout with Disco music. I was VERY confused when I first tried it. In fact, I was so confused that I didn't even break a sweat because I spent too much time trying to figure out what I was supposed to be doing. The second time I did it, it was a lot better. "Shake Your Booty" is so much fun! My 5 year old son does it with me because he loves that song so much.
There's also 3 high-intensity intervals, which he never did in the "Sweatin' to the Oldies" series. This is supposed to make you burn fat more effectively. I've lost 8 pounds in 3 weeks from doing this every day and I don't have a whole lot more to lose. It's a low-impact, high-intensity workout. You get the same workout without hurting your joints and back.
Great buy!! I'd recommend this to anyone!

The only downer on this video, is the soundtrack "Love Yourself" playing over and over for 25 minutes. However, I still gave it 5 stars because there is an option to change the music to Bollywood soundtracks which is much better in my opinion. I was really surprised by this video. It really works! I use 5 pound weights so it makes my workout a challenge (for me anyways). I do it with my friends sometimes or on my own. I like that I don't need a lot of equipment in order to do this video. I think that a real challenge would be to do the beginners video and the advanced in one workout. That would be hard! The fact that its cardio, weight lifting and circuit training in only 25 min makes it an A+ because it takes care of everything and will give you results.
