The Bible Series Box Set (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)Three out of these four DVDs are excellent! This is probably the nicest series of Bible stories available. The photography is beautiful, as well as the costumes, props and sets; the acting of the main characters is superb, likeable and believable; and the scripts usually stay very close to the actual Bible verses.
Genesis is the only stinker in this set. It is nothing like the other 3. The Genesis DVD has nice photography, but it does NOT act out the Bible scenes like the other three movies do! Genesis just narrates a reading of the book of Genesis, while showing contemporary desert people going about their daily lives.
If you are undecided about buying the whole set, then I would suggest buying at least one of these separately. "Jeremiah" is my favorite, and it really captures the attitude of a humble prophet being persecuted by the wayward Israelites. "Esther" is probably the most accurately told of these three good movies. It is a pretty clear storytelling, where the other movies sometimes change the order of events (but still portray the overall message accurately). "Solomon" covers the biggest chunk of Scripture, retelling many scenes of the life of Solomon and what Solomon wrote in the Bible.
I would rate the Genesis movie with 1 star, for being so misleading as to its content. But the other 3 films, Esther, Solomon, and Jeremiah are all 5 star movies! Even with the useless Genesis, the price of this DVD set is still a bit cheaper to buy the three good movies here, at one price, than to buy them one at a time.

The Christmas Shoes (2002) Review

Okay, if you don't want a sad movie, this movie is not for you. That doesn't make it a bad movie. Any number of stars in a mistake. You just got the wrong movie.
If you throw up at the thought of tender, affirmative feelings, this movie is not for you. That doesn't make it a bad movie. There a millions of hostile movies out there. Pick one.
News flash: there really ARE towns in the U.S. like the one in the movie (which was in Nova Scotia). If you hate small, friendly towns, then stay away from them. They probably wouldn't like you either.
On the other hand, if you like the feelings that are supposed to be associated with Christmas, this movie is a rare find. It's very easy to flub on tragic scenes. This movie doesn't. The acting by Kimberly Williams is just right. The timing and the scripting of the scenes is just right. As Maria Del Mar said in the special feature, these people act the way people really act. They don't throw things or rant the way most movie scripts have it. Maria, by the way, played her part very effectively.
I'm no fan of Rob Lowe, but his lawyer convinced me. Maybe I've known too many like him. They really are like this. If this strikes you as stiff, get over it. You want a lawyer, this is a lawyer.
I'm as easily depressed as the next guy, but I did not find this movie depressing. Tragic, yes. Depressing, no. Not sure why. The fact that the husband and son were going to go on, going to make it and be okay. The reformation of Robert was credible. It was thoroughly prepared and touching.
So, I found it a cathartic movie and very much in the true spirit of Christmas.

The singing is unbelievable (thank you Johnny Gill and Shirley Murdock) and the humor is sure to brighten your day. This play will open up your eyes and heart, and re-teach you some life lessons you've may have lost.

(More customer reviews)I've heard about this show before, and just watched it, and plan on watching it again before the night is out!
This movie is great. I expected to be let down, but it moved me like few other films have. It tells the story of God's love through a Christian witness like no other modern film that I've seen. Based on a real life story, it stars Pat Boone and Eric Estrada (who also starred in the television show Chips). This is a classic.
Don't be fooled by the above review. This has nothing to do with the world's morality, and everything to do about the love that God shows to save men.
This film was made in 1969, and may seem a bit dated in how it presents gang violence, but it presents it like the other, secular, films of that era, and quite frankly is like a long overdue breath of fresh air after watching the nth gang and detective shows of the 60s and 70s. Finally, something REAL.
It is also not surprising that the networks will not air this film, and therefore you will need to buy it. While the networks continue to promote witchcraft, a sequel to this movie was made. Nicky Cruz, the gang member who was saved in this movie tells his own story in "Run, Baby, Run" -- his family was involved in the occult and witchcraft. Another movie and another needed breath of fresh air.

Blessed & Cursed (2010) (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)God opens a door and Dwight Hawkins' (Deitrick Haddon) eyes are opened. He wants something different in life; no more shackin' up, no more premarital sex. He wants to be a better man and he wants to use the gift God gave him. Dwight Hawkins is anointed to sing. Bishop Wright recognizes his gift and makes him Minister of Music of the church. Things are going along as well as can be expected, but then Dwight suffers a loss. He begins to struggle with his faith and makes bad choices. This gives the Bishop, who is jealous of Dwight's standing in the church by this time, just the ammunition he needs to get rid of him. Dwight works hard to get back on track for the Lord, but the word of his bad actions had spread, making his efforts seem worthless. But there is someone who still believes in him, so he isn't down for long.
I have two of Deitrick Haddon's' albums (Lost and Found/Crossroads) and I really enjoy listening to his modern gospel music. This is the reason why I purchased this DVD, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I'm sorry to say that some of the acting was over the top (not all, just some), but I'm glad to say that I am not referring to Deitrick's acting skills. He is a natural!! His performance and all of the music were what I liked about this movie; I was glad to see there were two music videos in the special features I could enjoy.
What didn't I like? The movie jumps around and some scenes seem incomplete or unexplained. And, I guess it was supposed to be for effect, but sometimes the camera would come in and out of focus and that happened too much, as well as too many close ups in certain parts. Blessed & Cursed is described as a modern twist on the biblical tale of David and Saul, but the plot wasn't clear. When the movie ended I was feeling dissatisfied, like I missed something.

The Visual Bible - Matthew Review

(More customer reviews)The Matthew film has made a huge impact on my vision of the personality and character of Jesus. This film is word for word to the NIV translation of the Gospel of Matthew, and shows the chapters and verses in the lower corner of the screen. There are no added stories, characters, or words; but all of the emotions are expressed to their fullest which gives you a great understanding and meaning behind what is being said. It identifies a very approachable and caring Jesus figure. This film has inspired everyone I have shown it to (and I have shown it to many). In my personal opinion, the character of Jesus that is portrayed in this film, matches the Gospel more than any other movie I have ever seen about Jesus. This video has given me a great picture to go with the words written in the Bible and has helped me get a better understanding of what I am reading. I highly recommend this and all the other films made by The Visual Bible; they really do an outstanding job of adding personality to the characters. I am convinced that this is very close to the way it really happened (besides being white and speaking english of course;) I hope this review helped!

It was like I was watching a movie and not a stage play. Another thing I enjoyed most was the story content. The message pointed back to Christ. The bonus material was really cool too. Overall I loved it and would recommend it!
