Cuidado Con El Angel (2008) Review

Cuidado Con El Angel (2008)

Yeah, there's a few telenovelas out there. But they don't seem to be very well packaged or distributed. This year, it looks like that's going to change. I don't know why or how, but Cuidado Con El Angel has taken off like a rocket. It's talked about in the same breath as shows like Desperate Houswives or Lost. Think about it. It's not marketed to the general public. It's a household name in Hispanic/latin-american communities, but it went rogue and caught the attention of an audience who had never before paid attention to those sorts of shows before. Just like back in 1999 when Latin-American music artists came into vogue, I think 2010 will bring us another Latin explosion -- this time of soap opera stars. Something fun to watch out for.

CAVEAT EMPTOR: UTTERLY DISEMBOWELED SERIES
Disemboweled. Dessicated. Dissembled. Deteriorated. Disintegrated. Disjointed. Disfigured. Discordant.
Joyless. Juiceless. Jejune.
I have been completely cheated by this DVD set. HANG ON TO YOUR VHS TAPES OR DV-Rs BECAUSE HOURS OF PLOT HAVE BEEN CUT OUT WITH A DULL BUTTER KNIFE.
An appalling offering.

Dil Bole Hadippa (Dvd) (Bollywood Movie / Indian Cinema / Hindi Film) (2009) Review

"Dil Bole Hadippa!" ("My Heart Shouts "Hadippa"!(Hooray) makes a good intro to Bollywood/Indian musicals. It has all the splash of full-out Bollywood but with terrific modern updates & a little something for everyone. For the ladies there's the predictable but crackling good rom/com tension between Shahid Kapoor & Rani Mukherjee. With all this wrapped up in a cricket championship with a little gender-bending to keep it off-balance, guys should find it just as entertaining. For those who avoid subtitled films, know that there's as much English dialogue in Bollywood films nowdays as Hindi, particularly in this one, so don't let that keep you away.
The score is fantastic, with terrific Punjabi-flavored dance tunes that will keep anyone moving on the dance floor or in the workout room. Shahid's dancing is stellar as ever, and it's nice to see him finally paired with a partner who matches his energy & precision; someone he can really "play ball" with. Rani & Shahid are among my favorites separately, and together they don't disappoint. Rani as Veer/Veera is awesome. I thought it would be impossible for such a petite female to convincingly appear as a guy, but she goes at it with gusto & delivers great laughs. Shahid delivers a well-shaded performance with another slightly edgier character. Nice to see him moving so successfully from Boy-Next-Door characters to work with wider range.
It's a visually gorgeous film also, with all the bright colors & gorgeous Punjab landscapes in-larger-than-life 70mm. And, uh..the lead actors aren't too hard on the eyes, either.

DIL BOLE HADIPPA is a celebration of the never say die spirit of India. Here, for the first time, the dynamic duo of Shahid Kapoor & Rani Mukherjee, take you on a hide and seek game of romance, passion and dreams.
Veera (Rani Mukherjee) is a fire-cracker of a girl who lives in a small village but dreams in 70mm. She works in a local theatre group but dreams of playing cricket in the big league. Yes, believe it or not, she wants to play with Tendulkar and Dhoni for India.
While Veera dreams on in India, Rohan (Shahid Kapoor) is an accomplished captain of a county cricket team in England. Rohan returns to India to captain his father s cricket team which has been losing consecutively for the last 8 years.
In a village where girls don t play cricket, Veera has to put on a turban and beard and become a man to fulfill her dreams. Her brilliance on the field earns her a place in Rohan s team and Veera Kaur becomes Veer Pratap Singh.
And then begins a roller-coaster journey of Veera, Rohan and Veer filled with music, romance and comedy through Punjab and beyond.
This tale of turbans, twists and tricks will make your heart go Hadippa!

Tell No One Review

Tell No One

TELL NO ONE (Ne le dis à personne) succeeds on every level for this viewer. Based on Harlan Coben's novel and adapted for the screen and directed by Guillaume Canet, this is one of those intricately complex French films that is much in the same mode as the 1955 film LES DIABOLIQUES. Nothing is as it appears at first and even when the mystery is explained in what appears to be a systematic, cohesive manner, the 'real story' remains a conundrum. It is a brilliant little film well worth multiple viewings to fully appreciate all of the aspects of the fine acting, cinematography, direction and musical scoring.
In a misty opening we discover Alexandre Beck (François Cluzet) and his beautiful wife Margot (Marie-Josée Croze) only to abruptly be drawn into the murder of Margot and the beating of Alexandre. The incidents are shrouded in mystery and remain so for eight years when suddenly the now pediatrician Alexandre receives an email from the 'deceased' Margot. Alexandre's world is topsy turvy and he begins to share the strange incident with his family - his sister Anne (Marina Hines) and her lover Hélène (a radiant Kristin Scott Thomas), his father, Margot's family...and the police who begin to discover evidence that implicates Alexandre as the perpetrator. Alexandre's lawyer (Nathalie Baye) pits evidence against the police investigators while Alexandre's chief ally in his run from the accusers is Bruno (Gilles Lellouche), the father of a hemophiliac patient whom Alexandre has treated and befriended. The chase is on and the clues become increasingly puzzling until at last the truth of the now eight year old murder and all of the implications of that event unfold.
If there are seemingly holes in the story it is because we, the audience, are never quite sure about the twists and turns of the plot. The acting is superb from this cast of some of France's finest artists, and one of the best performances in the film comes from British actress Kristin Scott Thomas, reminding us that she is one of the most talented and beautiful actors on the screen today! This is a tough little film to follow, but the quality of both the story and the production is first rate. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, October 08
