Without a Trace (1983) Review

I first saw this movie back in the 80's and after all this time it doesn't lose it's appeal. The characters are very believable, and well acted. Stockard Channing gives a great performance as Susan's (Kate Nelligan) best friend. Many of the reviewer's state that this movie is a tear jerker, and it is! Even if you just watch the last ten minutes and nothing else you will need a full box of Kleenex! My only complaint is that it is not out on DVD yet, but this film is SO good that it's worth watching/owning on VHS - and that's comming from someone who won't buy anything on VHS anymore!!

One morning, six-year-old Alex Selky got dressed, waved goodbye to his mother and set off for school. Somewhere along the short two-block walk, he disappeared. Now for his mom Susan (Oscar®-nominee Kate Nelligan of THE PRINCE OF TIDES - 1992 in a performance The Los Angeles Times hails as "superb"), life becomes a sudden nightmare of police and reporters, panic and suspicion, despair and fear. But as the hours become days and months, can Susan convince her friends, her estranged ex-husband (David Dukes), the media, and the overworked detective in charge of the case (Oscar®-nominee Judd Hirsch of ORDINARY PEOPLE - 1981, and A BEAUTIFUL MIND) that a mother’s hope must somehow survive? Stockard Channing of THE WEST WING co-stars in this stunning drama about a woman who refuses to give up her fight to find the truth – no matter how heartbreaking – behind how her only child could vanish WITHOUT A TRACE.

Knight Rider - Season Two (1982) Review

Knight Rider - Season Two (1982)

This was the strongest and most ambitious season Of KR. The first episode named "GOLIATH" features Wilton Knight's evil son Garthe and a monstrous 18-Wheeler truck named "Goliath". This season also includes the sequel "Goliath Returns". Many other quality episodes are also included in this set that established KR as one of the best shows of the 1980s. Unfortunately this set, unlike the last, does not have any extras or bonuses. This is too bad because there's alot of behind-the-scenes material regarding the episode "GOLIATH" that I wouldve loved to seen. I am mad about Universal's lack of bonuses on their DVD sets, it seems that bonus material is not a priority. Too bad because I would've paid an extra few dollars to get a bonus disc that had "Goliath" on it. I give this review 5 stars for the episodes only. The DVD set deserves only 4, after all even though we get stiffed by the lack of bonuses the casing is well put together, I only wish the bonuses were included.Even though some of the original music has been deleted/altered it doesnt affect this set too much like it did the second season of Quantum Leap, after all unlike QL the music on KR was generic to begin with. Still Universal's lack of obtaining the rights of some songs is annoying and strips originality away from a classic series. Despite this any KR fan needs to own the most action-packed season of KR.

A Dangerous Man (2010) Review

I'm a big huge fan of Steven Seagal. I mean I had all his movies (maybe I have some that He does not have in his own collection). Steven Seagal is at the wrong place at the wrong time and for that He is going to kill a lot of people. This movie is full of killing and action. Any action movie fan should see this. I really enjoyed. Actually the movie makes sense and is really good. The last movies of Steven Seagal were really bad, but this one and The keeper are getting our action hero back in the field. If you like Steven Seagal you should buy it. You won't regret.

Gone Baby Gone (2007) Review

Gone Baby Gone (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ben Affleck has written (with Aaron Stockard) a superb screenplay adaptation of Dennis Lahane's novel GONE BABY GONE and has proceeded to direct this tough tale with an ensemble cast of both well-known actors and unknown actors and walk-ons from the streets of the Boston area where they grisly story takes place. The result is a film so well tuned and realistic with a perfect sense of pacing and character development that it becomes a remarkable calling card for Ben Affleck's career as a director. That it is going unnoticed (with the exception of Amy Ryan's nomination for Best Supporting Actress) by the Oscars is a grave oversight !
The time is contemporary Dorchester, Massachusetts and Patrick Kenzie (Casey Affleck) and his girlfriend/partner Angie Gennaro (Michelle Monaghan), become aware of a missing child Amanda (Madeline O'Brien) in their own neighborhood. The child's aunt Bea (Amy Madigan) and uncle Lionel (Titus Welliver), unable to cope with Amanda's drugged out mother Helene (Amy Ryan), knock on Patrick and Angie's door, pleading with them to help find Amanda: Patrick and Angie are private detectives who just happen to be an integral part of the neighborhood. Reluctant at first to become involved in the now 3-day police hunt for the child, a hunt headed by the respected Captain Jack Doyle (Morgan Freeman) who his lost his own daughter in similar circumstances and detectives Remy Bressant (Ed Harris) and Nick Poole (John Ashton) and who as a triad feel they are competent to handle the case without the 'immature experience' of the young couple. But Patrick and Angie do become involved, uncover leads within the neighborhood that lead to the clues behind the missing child incident and in doing so, unravel a lot of corruption within the police force, and also discover differences between themselves that threaten their otherwise close relationship. To say more would remove the incredible tension this story maintains all the way to the fadeout credits.
The cast is uniformly excellent, from the smallest roles to the most major ones. It is difficult to single out any performer for praise as this is truly an ensemble piece. The flavor of the film is honest, unflinching, and refuses to ignore the grotesque incidents that must be shown for the movie to maintain its impact. Writer Dennis Lahane ('Mystic River', 'Shutter Island') is a master of detailing the spectrum of responses that ugly matters induce: even the most noble of intentions have their shadowy side. Affleck finds all of this in this excellent film, a film so strong that it easily bears repeated viewings. Highly recommended...but not for the squeamish. Grady Harp, February 08

Taken (Single-Disc Extended Edition) (2008) Review

When I was a soldier stationed in Germany in the 1970s there was a raid on a Turkish-owned bar on the outskirts of Frankfurt A/M. German Polizei and US CID (US Army Criminal Investigation Division) broke up a white slavery ring that had been operating out of the bar for some time. The bar was a way-point in the transportation route of young European girls (preferably blonde) who had been kidnapped throughout Europe and were being smuggled to be sold in the harems and brothels of the Middle and Far East. The police found some twenty girls in the basement of the bar, some from as far away as Denmark and the Netherlands, waiting to be shipped further down the pipeline.
The German police and Interpol had been watching the bar for some time and were hoping to trace the route farther down the track to take down the ringleaders. The white slavers made the mistake of kidnapping the daughter of a US Army colonel whom they thought was a German national. The Colonel learned about the investigation and refused to allow his daughter to be held by the white slavers and victimized so the police could gather intelligence. As it turned out, I learned later, the raid eventually did lead to the disruption of this particular ring because the guys busted talked.
So, when I learned what this film was about I went in with a certain amount of understanding of the subject matter. Let me say here that this film hits the nail on the head in presenting its subject matter and the way young women are victimized by ruthless animals only out to make a buck. (SPOILER) The scenes where they show the young women being made into drug addicts to control them are particularly disturbing to me as I've seen the impact drugs had on young girls working as unlicensed street walkers in Germany (a nation that legalized prostitution to make it "safe"). As disturbing as the film was I am glad I watched it and if I had a daughter (I had all sons) I would make her watch this film when she reached an appropriate age in hopes it would make her more careful in how she behaved when I wasn't around to protect her. This is a film every parent should watch - it is a film every teenaged girl and boy should watch. It's sad, but things like what happens to the girls in this movie go on every day.
Having said that, the next question is, is the movie good?
Well, I've never seen Liam Neeson deliver a bad performance. Even if I didn't like the movie (and he's done a couple turkeys) he has always been superb. No exception here. Sadly, most of the negative comments about this film seem to be from people who don't like action movies. But Neeson elevates this even above the typical action movie. This is a story of family. When I watched Neeson's reaction to what happens to his daughter and his response I imagine it is what Natalie Holloway's daddy wishes he could have done, what every father of a child who has been abducted and brutalized wish they could do.
As a professional soldier and former martial arts instructor I find Neeson's action scenes are superbly executed and realistic. Don't look for a superhero leaping tall buildings with a single bound, but watch an expert, who may not be as young as he once was, doing what he knows best for a good cause. The fights are brutal, ruthless, and efficient, pros doing what they do. Even the violence is understated, brutal, but avoids the spectacular many audience have come to expect. What Neeson does is violent but considering the circumstances and motivation, necessary to save his girl. Great stuff.
The alleged coincidences do not strain or insult the intelligence overmuch, this is an action movie for folks who think. Of course, if you thought "The English Patient" deserved the Best Picture Oscar you'll probably hate this film. Otherwise, it is a don't miss. Neeson brings to the revenge flick empathy and gravitas lacking in other such films.
As I watched the film I thought of that Army colonel fighting Interpol and the German police to save his daughter. I hope he was able to see this film, I think he'd approve.
