The 1st season of the hit series "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy" is now finally on a two-disc DVD set with a whole lotta episodes on there starring the mean-spirited Mandy, the moronic Billy, and of course, The Grim Reaper himself. Such episodes include:
"Meet the Reaper" - The original pilot episode that started it all. As Grim attempts to reap the soul of a hamster named Mr. Snuggles, the two kids strike a deal with him, which he lost to.
"Fiend Is Like Friend Without the 'R'" - Introducing Nergal, a creepy being from the center of the earth, who kidnaps Billy and Mandy to be his friends. Soon Grim becomes concerned and reluctantly rescues them.
"Grim Or Gregory" - A case of mistaken identity on Halloween night has Grim confused with another kid in a reaper costume !
"Beasts and Barbarians" - A major inspiration to the video game, Grim transports the kids into another dimension where they battle bigger-than-life monsters in order to cure their gaming addictions.
"Hoss Delgado: Spectral Exterminator" - The first appearance of this tough guy who discovers and attempts on capturing the Grim Reaper.
"To Eris Human" - Introducing the sexy Goddess of Chaos, Eris, who takes Mandy as her minion leaving Grim feeling rather dumped.
"Toadblatt's School of Sorcery" - The first "Harry Potter" parody episode with its weird magic and other strange creatures. 'Nuff said.
"Brown Evil" - A two-parter where Billy cooks up some brownies that attracts a humongous horde of zombies ! It's up to Hoss Delgado to stop them.
"Creating Chaos" - One of the funniest episodes, Eris now recruits Billy to spread her chaos upon the globe. Unfortunately, Billy himself is a little more chaotic than her magic apple can do.
"Tween Wolf" - The hapless Irwin transforms into a werewolf which Billy adopts as his new pet.
"Love Is EVOL Spelled Backwards" - Nergal returns and attempts to marry Billy's Aunt Sis. Let's just hope Billy doesn't have that freak as his uncle.
This new set has an overload of bonus features like a commentary and an interview with series creator Maxwell Atoms, plus the "Brains" music video as seen in the classic episode "Little Rock of Horrors". The weirdest special features in the second disc include an episode in "Burp-O-Rama" and a virtual pet Mr. Snuggles. Perhaps the best bonus feature of all in the set is the 2 "Evil Con Carne" bonus episodes with optional "Skarr-O-Vision" feature. (I wish, however, they put in ALL of the "Evil Con Carne" episodes in the set. Then we can have "Grim and Evil" again !)
So if you've been waiting for this set to come by, get it while you still can. One thing's for sure, this is one series that will let you look Death in the eye... and laugh real hard. I really REALLY hope the rest of the "Billy and Mandy" series will be put on DVD real soon. But in the meantime, look for brand-new "Grim Adventures" episodes Friday nights on Cartoon Network's all-new "Fried Dynamite" block.

The Venture Bros.: Season Three (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)The Venture Bros. is without a doubt my favorite TV show, and has been for a while. There is so much to enjoy about this show it's hard to know where to start. The writers (Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer, also the voices of many of the characters) have taken the Jonny Quest concept and warped it beyond recognition into a tremendously enjoyable viewing experience. One thing I love about this show is Doc and Jackson's absolute refusal to dumb down the material in any way, shape or form. If you don't get a joke or a reference, you just have to rewind the DVD and watch again, or go online, or watch earlier shows (shows often refer back to tiny details in past shows, which you're expected to just know). Sometimes the jokes come from so far out of left field I end up shaking my head in amazement, as with an episode where two Men In Black-style government agents identify themselves as lepidopterists (as opposed to philatelists -- it'll make sense in context). Season 3 offers the same great writing as the first two seasons, but the look of the show has been dramatically improved with the 16x9 aspect ratio. The DVDs are also completely uncensored (I was amazed at how many swear words were in the episodes). This show can be enjoyed on many levels: the crazy comedy, the characters (who are endearing despite, or perhaps because of, their many foibles), the terrific over-the-top action sequences, the satire, the references, the amazingly convoluted backstory, and just the utter out-and-out insanity of every episode. The one negative thing is that the story has gotten sufficiently involved that it would be hard for a new viewer to really get what was going on by watching these episodes; you really need to buy the first two box sets (you can thank me later). Actually, there's another negative thing: after watching The Venture Bros., other TV shows seem depressingly stupid and boring by comparison.

"Created by Dino Stamatopoulos, a writer known for his regular contributions to adult comedy shows like Late Night with Conan O'Brien and TV Funhouse, this sinfully clever stop-motion series packs a wallop of a message in a short amount of time -- and, in essence, that's part of the problem. In fact, so much controversial humor peppers the show's 15-minute run that the shock value of the humor could overshadow the program's subtle message.
So while adults are more likely to see MORAL OREL for what it is -- a biting social satire mocking religious fundamentalism and hypocrisy within the Christian church -- kids (even some older teens) probably won't be able to appreciate the true sophistication of the humor. (And in case you were wondering, young children definitely won't get the joke.)
Borrowing its distinctive animation style from classic Rankin-Bass shows like Davey and Goliath, Moral Orel follows the often-shocking misadventures of 11-year-old Orel Puppington (voiced by Carolyn Lawrence), a devoutly Christian boy who tries his best to live life by "the book" but often misinterprets God's teachings. Week after week, Orel's good intentions lead to disaster.
But instead of learning from his mistakes, Orel is usually led astray by his pseudo-reflective father, Clay (Scott Adsit), whose advice is rarely helpful and always misses the mark. For example, at the end of an episode chronicling Orel's brief addiction to crack cocaine, Mr. Puppington cautions Orel that crack "is a gateway to slang," prompting the boy to solemnly vow: "When I do drugs, I'm going to speak properly." Parents should be aware that those are the types of "lessons" kids could inadvertently learn from watching this show.
Fans of Moral Orel will undoubtedly enjoy South Park and will probably also get a kick out of revisiting old episodes of Davey and Goliath for some pointed comparisons. Other recommendations include Strangers with Candy, King of the Hill, and The Simpsons."

Parents need to know that while this satirical Cartoon Network comedy is animated, it's part of the Adult Swim line-up for a reason: It's rife with graphic humor and isn't appropriate for young children. (For example, when the 11-year-old Orel takes a drag from his very first crack pipe, he snaps at his talking Jesus figurine and tells him to shut up.) Troubling content aside, however, the show can serve as a way for parents and older teens to talk about the pitfalls of religious fanaticism -- although families who are deeply religious may find the program offensive.
Families can discuss the ways in which religious dogma can be misinterpreted by those with good intentions. Does a person who is considered to be religious always act morally? What statement are the creators of this series making about the state of modern-day Christianity? How does this cartoon compare with Davey and Goliath, the early 1960s animated series it gently parodies?

(More customer reviews)G.I. Joe: Resolute first aired in 7-minute installments on Cartoon Network's [adult swim] in the summer of 2009. For adult fans of the 1980s cartoon series this is as close to perfection as an animated Joe feature can get. The animation style has a much more sleek and anime feel to it, but these are still the same characters and it's set in the same "universe" as the 1980s cartoon. "Resolute" has all the classic characters (Baroness, Destro, Cobra Commander, Duke, Snake Eyes, Stormshadow, Scarlett, etc.) from the '80s cartoon, but it treats them with a PG-13 rather than a "Saturday Morning" sensibility. There are bullets and blood and death.
The plot centers on another attempt by Cobra Commander to overtake the world and the Joes rallying to stop him. The highpoint of the film for me included the ultimate battle between Snake Eyes and Stormshadow I always dreamed of as a kid. If the 2009 feature film had half of the energy and emotion as this one fight alone it would've been an infintely more enjoyable film. Bottomline is if you were a 1980s Joe fan and found the live-action film lacking then you will be pleasantly shocked and awed by this outstanding animated feature.

Codename Kids Next Door - Sooper Hugest Missions File One (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)I'm 28 and I love this cartoon. It's corny and at times it's pretty stupid but the pure ridiculousness of it is what makes it so entertaining. I love the concept of 2x4 technology and having guns that shoot condiments, ice cream, gum balls etc... is classic! Not to mention the robots and other vehicles that are made of everyday things like carousels, cars, school lockers, and even a chimney! Codname KND puts a great spin on the action cartoons of the twenty first century. No blood, no guts - just plain fun and gags that can be appreciated by children of all ages. Also, the constant spoofs on classic movies; Robin Hood, Star Wars, Terminator, etc... is entertaining to adults who watch with their children (or by themselves!) I'm a lifelong lover of cartoons and although I really didn't like Codename KND the first few times I watched it I eventually came to love it and now watch it every chance I get. I've also converted a few of my adult cartoon loving friends into fans.
As for the animation style - it's true that the characters are drawn pretty amusingly. They look like pencils with apples stuck on them for heads, hands and feet but instead of complaining about the style take it for what it is. The entire cartoon is a spoof and the way it's drawn emphasizes that.
A comment on the accents of the characters; While reading through other reviews I noticed many complaints on how fake the British accent of Numbah One sounds. As stated in the previous paragraph - this is a spoof and how much more ridiculous would Numbah One sound if he had been voiced by someone with a real British accent? Could you seriously imagine Hugh Laurie reading the part? I believe that a real British accent would get even more complaints and besides, if you actually watched the cartoon you'd realize that neither of Numbah One's parents have an accent which would clue you in - he's just a kid trying to be cool as so many kids do. I've never heard a convincing accent come out of a child's mouth without extensive training. And to bash on Numbah Four's accent, calling it a bad British accent, is further proof that you don't watch the show. Numbah Four is Australian.
The characters all have distinct personalities and their individuality is part of what makes them so fun. Watching this cartoon takes me back to my own childhood, back when cartoons were only on Saturday morning and for an hour or two after school. Back before Nintendo and Xbox... When our imagination was all we had and we used it to the point of frying our brains. Today's youth can't always appreciate a cartoon like Codename KND because they can't necessarily relate. If you don't like it that's okay and feel free to trash it all you want, that's your right and I recognize your right. We all have different opinions and I love that amazon gives us the ability to share our opinions. Don't use these review spaces to put down the other reviewers though - that is immature and unnecessary. Who cares if someone misspells a word? I'm sure that I've misspelled quite a few words in my own review! Also, if someone writes a review that you don't agree with don't trash the person, just write your own review and leave it alone. Allow the consumer to make the choice don't try to sway them to your way of thinking. The purpose of these reviews is to share your opinion of the item in question with the intent of informing people of what it is they're considering purchasing.
I love Codename KND and I reccomend this cartoon to cartoon lovers everywhere!

Why, you ask, did Cartoon Network release two single disc DVDs before this entire first season set? Who knows? Maybe it was one of Eddie's scams. Those volumes, Edifying Ed-Ventures and Fool's Par-Ed-Ise only had six shows each. But here, at last is the Ed-ertainment value of the year: all thirteen episodes (each consisting of two cartoons) from season one on two single discs (with four special features), and at a price that leaves enough left for jawbreakers.
If you did buy the two single disc volumes (like me) the cartoons, "Sir Ed-A-Lot" "Who, What, Where Ed" and "Avast Ye Eds", from the first volume are also on the Season One set. "Fool on the Ed" repeats from the second volume.

Generator Rex, Vol. 1 Review

(More customer reviews)What went down five years ago was this crazy experiment in nanotechnology; things went horribly, horribly awry, resulting in nanites released unto the world, these microscopic machine parasites that mutate their biological hosts into mindless, rampaging monsters dubbed E.V.O.s (Exponentially Variegated Organism). Five years later, we run into Rex, a fifteen year old kid and himself an E.V.O. Except that, for some unfathomable reason, Rex has full control over his infection. He demonstrates the ability to manifest mechanical gadgets and weaponry from his limbs. Or he does at least until his biometrics get depleted (basically, this happens when he's stressing out). Rex fights the good fight against the out-of-control monster Evos. Rex can communicate with nanites to some extent, can even absorb nanites from other Evos, thus converting these Evos back to humanity, in effect, curing them.
Rex keeps room and board with the secretive, very constricting Providence group. Providence is dedicated to stamping out the Evos, although the organization can't seem to help but hire military-issue grunts armed with hi-tech weapons who regularly get their heinies handed to them. Rex is unique and valuable enough that Providence assigns him a watchdog in the shape of the stoic, deadpan Agent 6 (think THE MATRIX's Mr. Smith except 6 is a good dude... and has a soul patch). There are two nurturing influences in Rex's life. One is his constant companion, Bobo Haha, who is a chimpanzee that sports an eye patch and talks and wears a diaper (although the chimp calls it a "simian undergarment"). And so, okay, maybe Bobo isn't so nurturing. Then there's the lovely Doctor Holiday who tries to be a mother figure for Rex, except Rex keeps flirting with her. Is it any wonder that Rex - who is at that teen stage in his life - frequently chafes under the constraints placed on him by Providence? Of course the boy would act out, would persist in running away again and again. It doesn't help that he's got no early memories of his life. There's a bit of a dark side to Rex, and to this series as well. Makes it cooler.
GENERATOR REX quickly constructs its own world mythology. It makes for a nice change that the entire world is very much aware of the Nanite Event and the Evos. In the debut episode, Rex meets the series' central villain, Van Kleiss, a crazy powerful Evo with seemingly absolute control over his native habitat. We learn that Van Kleiss has direct ties not only to the Nanite Event five years ago but to Rex himself. And then there's also Van Kleiss's Pack of Evo cronies. Sucks for Rex ----- and here's a SPOILER alert for the rest of this sentence ----- that the girl he meets and crushes on in the third episode ("Beyond the Sea") ends up joining the Pack.
GENERATOR REX comes from the Man of Action creative team, and it's only natural that this show is a bit reminiscent of BEN 10, in its sci-fi sensibilities and in its fun, action-oriented tone. Kids falling into those 'tween ages make the ideal audience. Admittedly, this series doesn't much indulge in strong character development. The cast is pretty much cut from generic, cookie cutter molds, with emo Evo girl Circe coming off as the show's most interesting character, mostly by default. Breach, one of the Pack Evos and whose power is translocation, is strangely sympathetic in "Breach" (a great episode in which Rex wakes up in a school inhabited by creepy dolls). Rex himself is straight out of central casting, the rebellious kid struggling with his own identity and who keeps on making these rash decisions but with the best intentions in mind. But Rex is only looking to fit in. He does grow on you.
It's a compelling-looking freak show. Think RESIDENT EVIL-lite. The monsters earn the show some cool points for their variety and for their visualization, and some of them look gross indeedy. Check out those icky zombie things in "String Theory." Lots of big frenetic action sequences. Agent 6 is just unflappable, even when he's doing his martial arts thing, and I dig the swords that spring out of his sleeves. But Rex's power is wicked sick, man. Rex generates weapons that are scaled to truly mammoth proportions, and that's part of the show's neat gimmick. Size matters, yo. It's bloody brilliant watching him pound on the mutant beasties.
GENERATOR REX Vol. 1 is a 2-DVD set and gives us Season One's first nine episodes, and, yep, nine episodes are ample enough that I can't front on this collection. By the ninth episode, Rex finally begins to unearth details regarding his enigmatic past. Still, for those with an eye at the big picture, sooner or later, they're bound to release a full season DVD set. So you may want to hold out for that day. The bonus material ain't much: Orange's music video of "Revolution" (GENERATOR REX's theme song) and the brief "Evolution of Evos," which is basically a character design segment. The nine episodes featured are:

(More customer reviews)Ok, ok...I know this is a cartoon series, but I must say that I find it hilarious! I am 31, and my son is soon to be 6. He and I watch this show together every weeknight at 7pm, and it doesn't matter that we've seen the episodes several times! They are just as funny each time! Also - if you have a child, watching them laugh at the characters is worth the price alone! The show has jokes and obvious sight gags that are geared towards adults....yet it has 'childish' humor and moralistic storylines. You wouldn't think that your child could learn anything from this show, but they do! Friendship, honesty, being trustworthy, diligence.....it's all here, along with fart jokes, fast-talking Goo, and the self-centered Bloo. Trust me- if you like cartoons AT ALL, you will love this series!

Star Wars: Clone Wars, Vol. 1 (Microseries) (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky of Dexter's Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls, and Samurai Jack fame, this series of 20, 3 minute shorts was created to bridge the gap in story between Episodes 2 and 3 of the Star Wars prequels. This is vol. 1 of a 2 vol. series; the second will be in a slightly different format (15 minute episodes) and will animate the opening scrawling text of Episode 3. These shorts, though brief, are a lot closer to what the fans have expected out of the prequel films but haven't gotten. There is a lot of action and the characters, for the most part, are much better realized than in the films. In fact, there is more character development in just the one 4 second scene between Anakin and Amadala in this series then there is in the entire second Star Wars prequel. Lucas gave Tartakovsky reign to tell original stories for this series and he has chosen to focus on the various Jedi and their skills, something the films generally lack. Once again, we learn more about Mace Windu and the entire order of the Jedi through these 3-minute shorts than we do in the hours of Prequel footage released so far. What's really nice about this DVD is that the shorts have been edited into one 69-minute feature that helps keep the story much tighter than when they aired on the cartoon network, broken up into 3-minute chunks. The extras are nice as well, though just as short as the original cartoons were. All in all, between this volume and the next currently in production, I think these cartoons will eventually find their way to becoming part of the Star Wars film series and not just a diversion from it.

Support quality programs on Adult Swim. They ruthlessly kill off good shows as seemingly as often as people get offed in Metalocalypse. Season 2 sees the return of characters introduced in the first series, some of whom viewers were given the impression were probably dead or gone for good. This was a pleasant surprise as is the further development of the characters. There's more to some of them than you first realize. Season 2 also continues to follow a certain strange top secret orginization monitor and cause trouble for the band. It does have me curious how they'll wrap that up. I do know this - the concluding episodes of seasons 1 and 2 are so kick *** they leave you wanting more.

Ben 10: The Complete Season 3 Review

(More customer reviews)I was watching TV (Cartoon Network, of course!) with my younger brother's boys, and my younger sister's girls. Shows like Kids Next Door, and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, two shows okay for kids, but left me talking to them about the cartoons that "I" watched when I was their age: The Herculoids, Space Ghost, etc. They sat there listening to me talk about these shows, and how cool they were to me, when my youngest nephew says "Ben 10". I asked them what that was and they tell me its about a boy that can turn into 10 alien monsters to fight bad guys, kinda like the cartoons that I watched, but way better! It comes on right after Foster's. Well an hour later (they showed two episodes in a row of Ben 10) I was hooked! Ben 10 has a very interesting storyline (even for adults), and very cool Alien/Monster designs. The two episodes I watched dealt with "Ghostfreak" one of Ben's aliens escaping from the Omnitrix, and trying to merge its form with Ben's so it can survive in the sunlight, and commit horrible things. This was actually kind of a creepy character, and a dark story, I loved it! And so did the kids. As I said before, I was hooked! I watched this show every chance that I could with them, and now I own them all in the 3 DVD sets that have been released so far.
If you are an adult that still likes cartoons, or just want to have something that is very fun, and entertaining for the kids to watch, you need to get Ben 10!

Robot Chicken: Star Wars (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)I watched this DVD today and laughed as much or more as the first time I saw this show on Adult Swim. This DVD has a number of features to recommend it:
- Two hours of extra features, including deleted scenes, commentary, animation meeting, panel presentations, alternate audio and more.
- Terrific presentation of the original show. It even sounds as though the music to dialogue level has been adjusted on the "Empire On Ice" sketch so that the hilarious lyrics to the songs are much more audible and clear than they were when originally shown on TV.
At less than $10, this DVD is absolutely worth it. A great entertainment value for the price. Even the blurbs on the back of the DVD case are entertaining.

The Powerpuff Girls - The Movie (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)I am forty-years old and have been a PpG fan since day one back in November of 1998. I LOVE THE PPG MOVIE! Some people do not understand that this is the prequel to the TV series, so of course it will not have all the villains in the movie. Craig McCracken wanted to balance out the film where fans of the show, and people who have never seen the PpG, can enjoy it. The movie is just like the TV series.
I am happy to see that Craig did not make any improvements to the characters as other films do that go from TV to the big screen. He kept the characters the same as they are on the show. The animation is a little better.
The movie makes references to such films "Planet of the Apes," "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes," "The Wizard OF Oz," and "King Kong."
My favorite scene is where the girls are playing tag in Townsville. The girls are having a ball playing tag around Townsville. They do not realize how rough they are playing and in the process, they are destroying the town.
This film makes you laugh while other animated shows take themselves too seriously. The PpG reminds me of the Cartoons I used to watch when I was a kid. Cartoons like Atom Ant, The Beatles Cartoons, Spider-Man, Top Cat, the Impossibles, and the campy 1966 Batman TV series.
It is not only the animation that makes the movie great; it is also the talents of the voiceover actors that bring the characters to life. E.G. Daily, Tara Strong, Cathy Cavadini, and the rest of the cast make these characters laughable, loveable, and believable. Everyone has done an excellent job on this movie.
I hope Cartoon Network and Warner Brothers decide not to get rid of the cast of this fine and unique series. The show will lose many fans if CN and WB do decide to get a new cast. The cast was almost replaced before the voices were recorded for the movie. CN and WB did not want to pay the cast all the money that the cast were supposed to get for the TV series, the movie, and the PpG merchandise. I am happy to hear that things worked out for the film.
I was not disappointed with the PpG movie. I love the show more now after seeing the movie. I plan to see it again. I cannot wait of this movie on DVD.
If you only see on animated movie this year, see the Powerpuff Girls Movie. If you are not a fan or have never seen the PPG, you will be come a fan.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold - Season One, Part One Review

(More customer reviews)My review will cover two parts. First let's talk about the show. When I first heard about it, I had my doubts. I grew up on the great "Batman: The Animated Series" and loved "The Batman," especially at the end. But when this came out I first thought they had ran out of ideas for Batman. I was wrong, it mixes action like from the last two shows and adds in humor in such a perfect amount for Batman that it comes off as enjoyable instead of cheesy.
Now as for the release. I agree with everyone else here, this should be the FULL season one. I hate when the studio release half a season of a show. Disney did it with "Gargoyles: Season Two," and Warner has done it with "The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest: Season One, both of which may never see the rest of their season on DVD. Warner has also done it with other shows like "Tiny Toons"and "Smurfs." Is it a cheep underhand move to try and force the consumer to fork over more money then they would for releasing these seasons whole? Sure is. Is it right? Nope, in fact it turns consumers off. But that fact is the way these studios think, if this set does not sell, good luck seeing much more of this show on DVD, even if it is Batman. "Gargoyles" and "Real Adventures of Johnny Quest" have shown that already.
Bottom line, despite how wrong it may be, if you love this show and want to see more of it on DVD, buy this release.

Why Cartoon Network is wasting airtime on shoddy live-action shows when great animation like this can be had from Canada (oh bless you, Great White North!) baffles me.

To think that back at the start of this decade, when the millenium had just arrived, we were first introduced to DVD boxed sets and they were reserved mostly for top property shows like The Simpsons, South Park or Family Guy, or else new properties like 24. Now only as this decade comes to a close have animation fans started seeing some major releases as far as past animated series on DVD. Amazing shows such as GI Joe, Transformers, X-men: The Animated Series, and Daria (to be released this May) finally became available on DVD.
Now fans of the classic Cartoon Network shows, from back in the Toonami days, can own th complete first season fo Johnny Bravo, a show that was worked on by Family Guy's own Seth Macfarlane. The first season contains the following 13 episodes on 2-discs,

I grew up watching Deter's Laboratory and would love to own it on DVD. Johnny Bravo was a lesser favorite of mine in comparison so I give the series a 4/5 but certainly feel safe giving this set 5/5 on account of all the special features sure to please fans who are happy enough just to own the episodes in a proper set.Thanks for your time.
