Dark Angel: The Complete Series Review

Dark Angel: The Complete Series

I wasn't sure what to expect as apparently I missed out on the series when it aired in Australia a few years back. Originally I was in two minds whether to buy the set or not and was only looking at it because Jensen Ackles was in it. Then I saw that Michael Weatherly was one of the lead characters with Jessica Alba and decided to purchase both seasons. I was not disappointed at all. The first season set up the big picture of genetically altered humans and followed through on Max's journey to find out who she was. The writers didn't deviate from the 'plan' in season one at all and there wasn't an episode that I didn't like. Season Two mainly concentrated on the transgenics which were released from Manticore and to the main cast added Joshua (Kevin Durand) and Alec (Jensen Ackles). Just loved the way that each episode panned out with a special story about some of the 'mutant' transgenics. Once again the writers stuck to the 'plan' and mainly concentrated on the transgenics story and once again I was not disappointed by any episode. The finale was excellently done by the writers. I would recommend this TV Show to anyone who likes a bit of sci-fi. Some people didn't like it, but mostly I just couldn't stop watching the series until I had finished it.

Into the Blue 2: The Reef Review

Into the Blue 2: The Reef
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, it's been a while since I've seen the first, so I'm
judging this based on this movie alone. Over all, this is a decent
movie. The acting is decent by most of the cast and it seems to be well
cast. The storyline is surprisingly good. It's easy to follow and after
the first 30 minutes it will keep you watching. But you have to give it
those 30 minutes to get into it.
No, contrary to popular belief Audrina does not have a big part in the
movie. She's on screen all of 5 minutes (and that's generous). I have
no idea how that rumor came about.
If you want a movie just to watch to kill time, this is that movie. It
won't wow you but it will keep you entertained as the story really is a
good one. I was surprised that it was as good as it is.

Awake (2007) Review

Awake (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
AWAKE would be better named 'audience wake up' as the minimal novel idea of the story loses credibility so quickly that the development of the subplots become increasingly tedious and silly. Joby Harold both wrote and directed this film and despite the presence of some fine actors, the film remains grounded.
Clay Beresford (Hayden Christensen) has inherited his dead father's multi-billion dollar fortune and shares the wealth and control of his empire with his domineering mother Lilith (Lena Olin). Clay apparently has a genetically determined cardiac pathology, is medicated, and awaits a heart transplant. The only semblance of honest life Clay has is his love for his mother's secretary Sam (Jessica Alba) who, despite Lilith's objections, marries Clay after disclosing their relationship. Clay's beeper warning that a cardiac donor is available cuts short their night of honeymoon and Clay is rushed to the hospital to his constant friend, Dr. Jack Harper (Terrence Howard), who just happens to be a heart transplant surgeon and who Clay prefers over Dr. Neyer (Arliss Howard), the superior cardiac surgeon friend of his mother who has been the designated surgeon all along. The gimmick of the film is 'anesthetic awareness', a state of anesthesia when the patient is paralyzed but aware of the talk in the OR as well as the pain of the surgery. What Clay hears 'under anesthesia is a ridiculous, convoluted plot involving all the people he thought he could trust and about which he can do nothing: in order to keep the storyline rolling, the script gives him an out of body experience so that Clay can be his own detective in solving the myriad discrepancies of his situation. The ending is very predicable and begs viewer indulgence.
Perhaps the credibility of this story would have been better if the director and actors had paid more attention to OR technique: walking into an OR in street clothes, handling patients without gloves or masks, allowing outsiders to enter the OR during a transplant procedure, beginning surgery without documentation of complete anesthesia or before the donor heart arrives, etc. etc. etc. are such breaches of surgical rules that even the casual viewer of TV medical dramas knows. But the real problem with the script is that we are left caring very little for any of the characters, despite the fact the roles are assigned to some heavy hitters! Sadly, the movie is just silly. Good Luck Chuck (Unrated Widescreen Edition) (2007) Review

Good Luck Chuck (Unrated Widescreen Edition) (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having seen Dane Cook as a stand-up comedian and been entertained by his humor and delivery, GOOD LUCK CHUCK seemed like an innocuous brainless evening entertainment. Unfortunately the story and script and direction are so sub par that even the most devoted of potty mouth movie fans will likely find this dud a bore. Hopefully Cook will be given better material for his next outing.
The story is meager but deals with a childhood hex placed on Cook's character, dentist Charlie Logan, which prevents him from finding lasting love: every woman with whom he sleeps (and there are countless encounters in the buff on endless multi-screen images) will marry the man she meets after her liaison with 'good luck' Charlie Logan. His obnoxious breast augmenter best friend Stu (Dan Fogler) sees Chuck's hex as a godsend for open sex, but when Chuck meets Klutz penguin trainer (Jessica Alba) and falls in love, there are problems - the solutions of which are so disgusting and unfunny that hardly need repeating.
This is a film, apparently with an audience (!), that is gross and so over the top that it completely wastes the talents of Cook and Alba. The film is being advertised as the 'chance to extensively see Dane Cook in the buff', but even that is an overstatement. Maybe if the viewer is on strong drugs....No, probably not even then. Pass on this one. Grady Harp, January 08

The Killer Inside Me (2010) Review

The Killer Inside Me (2010)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bringing pulp novelist Jim Thompson to screen has always been a tricky proposition. His dark stories are easy to push over the edge of sanity. With their undercurrent of brutality, they can walk the line of comedy and/or surrealism but still maintain a realistic punch to the jaw. Getting that tone has been hit or miss in cinema--personal favorites are the sublime "The Grifters," "Coup de Torchon" and the underrated "After Dark, My Sweet." I was stoked to hear director Michael Winterbottom had taken on "The Killer Inside Me" which had been covered poorly in an earlier production featuring Stacy Keach.
Winterbottom has assembled an impressive cast including Casey Affleck, Jessica Alba, Ned Beatty, and Kate Hudson for this neo-noir piece. Affleck stars as a low-keyed and likable law enforcement officer who gets involved with a local prostitute and enmeshed in a murderous scheme. But to cover his tracks, further bad deeds need to be done--and Affeck seems to relish this new evil! It's best not to go into the specifics of the plot and to let the film unfold, but Winterbottom does not shy away from some explicit and surprising violence. It's unsettling, to say the least, but helps to establish an effective "anything can happen" feel!
Ultimately the success of "The Killer Inside Me" rests on Casey Affleck's shoulders. He is not the conventional actor one would picture for this role. Small in stature, relaxed in delivery (and enunciation)--his offbeat presence actually makes "The Killer Inside Me" even more intriguing. As he is not a predictable "leading man" or a particularly menacing presence, you're never quite sure what he's going to do. I found this lack of expectation to be quite invigorating and led me to accept and appreciate the twists of the film to a greater degree. To be fair, the film does get loopier and loopier--but I was happy to follow this sordid tale through to the completely over-the-top finale! KGHarris, 8/10.

Oscar-nominated actor Casey Affleck (Gone Baby Gone) gives his most chilling performance yet in the controversial crime drama The Killer Inside Me. Co-starring Jessica Alba (Fantastic Four), Oscar nominee Kate Hudson (Almost Famous), Emmy nominee Simon Baker (TV s The Mentalist) and Bill Pullman (Independence Day), this modern-day film noir shows a small town sheriff up to his neck in murders: his own. When Affleck s sheriff is asked to railroad a talkative prostitute out of town before she makes trouble, he realizes it s easier to just get rid of her for good. Unfortunately, covering up that murder means eliminating more and more people as his problems and complications spiral out of control. Even worse, he s starting to enjoy committing the crimes a lot more than he ever enjoyed dishing out the punishment. Based on the pulp fiction classic by Jim Thompson (The Grifters), The Killer Inside Me is an assured, stylish film [Guardian UK] that reveals the danger when a lawman s badge is hiding a cold, cold heart.

Machete (2010) Review

Jan 3, 2011:
This isn't so much a review of the film itself, but of the product. I'm writing to inform people of a future Double Dip. In an interview in October 2010, Robert Rodriguez said that there is going to be an "Ultra-violent Director's Cut" of the movie to be released on home video. No release date has been announced for that DVD yet, but I assume that version of the film will have the usual Rodriguez extras such as a commentary, a film school, and a cooking school (all of which are not on the current DVD/Blu releases).
If you like "Machete" enough to buy it, but don't care about different versions, extras, etc., then go ahead and get this version of the film. If LOVE "Machete" and you want to hold out, then save your money and wait for the next version of the DVD/Blu that will come out. Fair warning: looking at the double dips for other Rodriguez films such as "Grindhouse" and "From Dusk Til Dawn", the next release could be possibly several months or years from the date I'm writing this review. If you can't wait, go ahead and pick up this version.

From director Robert Rodriguez (Grindhouse, Sin City) comes an action- packed, cutting-edge serving of carnage asada...with killer deleted scenes that deliver more guns, more girls and more Machete action!Set up, double-crossed and left for dead, Machete (Danny Trejo) is an ass-kicking ex-Federale who lays waste to anything that gets in his path. As he takes on hitmen, vigilantes and a ruthless drug cartel, bullets fly, blades clash and the body count rises. Any way you slice it, vengeance has a new name--Machete.
