10 Minute Solution - Workouts to Shape Up Your Whole Body (1999) Review

I just got the DVD a couple of days ago and I really like the mix and match format. However, if you need music for motivation, skip this one.
There are 5 different 10 minute segments as follows:
Boot Camp - Light cardio, squats, push ups, etc. Need dumbells and a chair. This is billed as the 'strength training' segment and it's quick, but good.
Pilates - I've never done pilates before so it could be a typical pilates workout, but I was suprised to find it was all ab work. Very tough - something for my weak stomach muscles to work up to! My husband who works his abs all the time said it was a good workout, but took some coordination.
Ballet - All barre work (chair). I took ballet as a kid and I loved this section. Great for legs & arms! The moves are not nearly as complicated as those in the NYC Ballet Workout.
Kickboxing - Least favorite part. Moves hard to follow and not very fun. Stick to Tae Bo.
Yoga - I've never taken Yoga before either, but I would consider this "relaxing". The stretches were wonderful. Great way to end the workout.
On an ongoing basis, I will probably do Boot Camp twice, Ballet twice, Pilates once and finish with Yoga to get a full hour workout. I was disappointed with the kickboxing section, but in general, The 10 Minute Solution delivers a solid workout with variety! It's also a great way to sample some of the different workout types out there. I'm excited to check out more yoga workouts and more mix-n-match DVD's.

For those of you who have seen- or I am sure heard of- the "Quick Fix Hop Hop" by Juliane Arney, you will see the familiarity here (if you do not have that DVD--get it, it is great)!! Juliane is renowned for her dance knowledge and choreograped this DVD, as well as many of the other dance ones you see on the market, including "Crunch" and the "Dance off the Inches" series. If you liked her "Quick Fix" you will love this although it is in no way a repeat of her previous DVD. I work out on the carpet and have no trouble with the swivels, etc, as I just do them more on my toes. I have also noticed that moves that seem nearly impossible to those of us that are not trained dancers amazingly come to us after practice. I never thought I would be "hip hopping" away but thanks to this and the other videos on the market I feel confident in doing it. This is a fun DVD, Kristin Jacobs as the instructor is good, but definitely buy it for the choreography which is fresh and so fun!

10 Minute Solution: Pilates Review

I'm a big fan of the short workouts, because I have a very demanding and irregular work schedule (long hours, lots of travel). As I get further away from my college years, I also find that there's more "trouble areas" developing on my body, so I prefer workouts that hone-in on specific body target zones. This DVD fits the bill. I enjoy the pilates-inspired workouts because they leave me feeling like I get a good workout without working too hard. The thing that makes this DVD so special is that it works my muscles even harder than previous pilates DVDs I've tried: the workouts give me that "good workout soreness" the next day, but do so without exhausting me so much that I can't bring myself to do it again after another long workday. I also like that in addition to focusing on my favorite trouble spots (abs, buns and thighs), this DVD has a 10-minute pilates sculpting workout (get out your light weights, everybody), a 10-minute cardio-toning pilates workout (get that heart rate up, everybody) and, my personal favorite, a 10-minute flexibility workout, which is relaxing--not strenuous--and is the perfect workout nightcap for any exercise routine (I truly mean that, it loosens all the muscles with a great, unique set of stretches). Another great benefit of having this DVD is that it allows you to build the number and order of the 10-minute workouts so that you can play as many or as few as you want, in whatever sequence you like.
To top it all off, Lara Hudson is a fantastic instructor. I didn't realize the importance of a good instructor until I found some folks that I didn't like (for example, Denise Austin's raspy voice gets on my nerves). Lara Hudson, on the other hand, is sweet, motivating, and explains the exercises with just the right amount of dialogue. She's also very attractive without being impossibly in-shape (so she's pleasant to look at and you can actually imagine yourself having a body like hers someday). The scenes are all in a well-lit studio with modern exercise music playing softly in the background. Overall, I have no complaints. The one word of caution I must say though is that I think these exercises are better suited for people who have prior pilates experience or who are at least moderately in-shape, because they are quite challenging and do not offer modifications on the movements. So for those of you who like short, challenging, effective pilates-inspired exercises with variety, a good instructor, and a pleasant ambience, I strongly recommend this DVD.

10 Minute Solution: Fat Blasting Dance Mix (2006) Review

10 Minute Solution: Fat Blasting Dance Mix (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wasn't sure whether I would like this workout--as I've become a more advanced exerciser, I've tended to move away from exercise DVDs which offer short segments, as I have found that these usually aren't intense enough to provide me with a good workout. Therefore, I was pleasantly suprrised upon trying Fat Blasting Dance Mix a discovering that my heart rate was in my target fat-burning zone for nearly the entire workout! Plus, the moves were fun and relatively easy to pick up after a few times through.
Overall, this video reminded me a bit of Dance Off the Inches: Calorie Blasting Party. Instructor Jennifer Galardi is a bit similar in style to the instructor from that video, although more low-key, which I prefer. Also, rather than teaching the moves at three different tempos as in the Dance Off series (which I didn't like because it causes my heart rate to drop), Jennifer teaches by building on different aspects of each move. For example, first she'll teach you a simple leg move such as a step out, then she'll incorporate a bit more of a dancey feel, and finally, she'll add arms to complete the exercise. In each of the five segments, she teaches the moves in an add-on style, eventually taking it from the top so that you can run through the entire sequence (but because each segment is short and there are only five or so total moves, it never feels like the combinations are overly long).
One of the best things about this DVD is that it is programmable--ie, there is a menu which allows you to mix and match any of the five segments to create your own customized workout, which I loved. Three of the segments are cardio-focused--Simple Slimmer, Calorie Meltdown, Fat Blasting Party--while the last two are more toning-oriented--Butt & Thigh Blaster, Ab Attack--although still intense enough to produce a cardio effect. The cardio segments gradually get more intense, with SS containing the most basic moves, CM taking it up a notch, and FBP adding a bit more impact with some hops and jumps. Both toning segments were performed entirely in a standing position, pairing some traditional strength training moves (eg, lunges, crunches) with dancey choreography, which I found to be fun and different.
I enjoyed this video, especially the programmable aspect and the unique, dancey toning segments. I would definitely recommend this DVD to anyone who enjoys dance workouts and who is able to pick up choreography with a slightly-beyond-basic complexity level.
Update 12/11/06: The more I use this video, the more I like it! It's one of the only dance videos I've ever owned which gets my heart rate up quickly and keeps it there. I find myself mixing and matching the various segments often. If I could change my rating to 5 stars, I would--very highly recommended!

10 Minute Solution: Fitness Ball Workouts (2006) Review

10 Minute Solution: Fitness Ball Workouts (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fitness Ball Workouts is a sequence of five short fitness routines, each of which use a stability ball. Because this DVD is part of the 10 Minute Solution series, each workout is only 10 minutes long, and the fully programmable feature allows you to mix and match up to six segments to create your own, completely customized routine--very nice! None of the segments have formal warm-ups or cool-downs, but most do prepare you with a few moves in the beginning and then add some quick stretches at the end. I've provided a brief overview for each of the five routines below:
1. Lower Body. Although this segment uses no weights, it was probably the most challenging of the five. Kimberly begins with simple squats and side-to-side lunges, but she eventually adds in bouncing the ball and raising it overhead; combined with the high number of repetitions, you'll be really working here. Next comes some glute work while lying face down on the ball, and finally, there is a tough hamstring portion performed lying with your feet on the ball.
2. Upper Body. This segment was probably the most disappointing, especially given that Kimberly uses such light weights (I believe she is using 3#). She begins by warming up the upper body with push-ups (an easier version with hands on the ball) and then moves into an upper body circuit. The circuit includes rows, tricep kickbacks, bicep curls, shoulder presses, side raises, and front raises; it is repeated three times, each time adding a few new moves such as flyes/rear flyes. Kimberly moves quickly, which makes it difficult to vary your weights as needed (I tried to switch between 5# and 8#).
3. Core. Kimberly does warm you up here with some spinal rolls and core twists holding the ball. She performs several sets of crunches while seated on the ball, adding a twisting move to target the obliques. More oblique work follows while lying sideways over the ball, and then Kimberly moves to the floor for additional crunches, this time passing the ball from feet to hands. Some brief back work follows (kneeling while leaning forward on the ball), and then Kimberly finishes with plank work (arms/hands on ball).
4. Cardio. This segment begins with squats and lunges, rolling the ball in front of you for balance. Kimberly adds in bouncing the ball and tossing it overhead, which was kind of fun. She then ups the intensity with some impact moves such as jacks (holding the ball overhead) and plyo squat jumps (hands on the ball). There is a brief interval where you continue to work while seated on the ball, but then it's back on your feet for more jumps, hopping out to plank with your hands on the ball. This segment ends with a squat and roll over the ball plus a few quick stretches. Although this routine was fairly intense, my HR was only in my target zone for about half the workout (5 minutes). Also, it took up quite a bit of room in my small space.
5. Flexibility. In this final segment, Kimberly leads you through a series of stretches using the ball. There is more of a lower body emphasis, beginning with lunges/hip flexor stretches as well as some standing hamstring stretches. There are a few upper body stretches performed seated on the ball, but for some reason, Kimberly moves very quickly through these and does not hold them for as long as the lower body stretches.
Overall, although these were generally solid, well-designed routines, I didn't really enjoy this workout. I'm not sure that the 10-minute format works well for mixing strength and cardio; an all-strength program might have been better. However, I would recommend this video to those who like Kimberly, enjoy using the ball, and prefer to break their workouts into shorter segments; the fact that the routines are programmable is definitely a huge plus as well.

10 Minute Solution: Knockout Body Workout Kit w/Weighted Gloves (2009) Review

10 Minute Solution: Knockout Body Workout Kit w/Weighted Gloves (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the third 10 Minute Solution DVD that I own, and I must say it is my favorite. The others that I own (a yoga DVD and a dance DVD) were ones that I bought with high hopes, but was very disappointed in them. Not with this one! Jessica Smith is the instructor, and she was the reason I bought it in the first place. (I love her Women's Health DVD, Train For Your Body Type.) She doesn't disappoint, and the 5 10-minute segments are all solid and targeted to what they are supposed to do. The five workouts are: Knockout Body Blast (a total body workout), Fat Attack (total body workout but increasing heart rate here with jumping & shuffling moves), Ultimate Upper Body, Kickbox Cross-Train, and Fierce & Fabulous Abs. (This is the order they are played in if you hit "Play All" from the DVD menu.)
I wouldn't say it's for advanced exercisers, but it is a great intermediate workout that will get your blood pumping and work those "problem areas." It comes with weighted gloves (I think they're 1 pound), which are used in every 10-minute segment.
The good:
1. The first two segments, Knockout Body Blast and Fat Attack, will get your heart rate up! There is some jumping in these segments, so be careful if you have bad knees.
2. The Abs workout is fabulous; Jessica does some newer moves that I haven't seen before, and my abs were on fire by the end of those 10 minutes. (You need a mat for this segment.)
3. The moves, for the most part, were easy to follow and to do. She does "add on" to moves, but she does more complicated moves slowly first, and then speeds them up. I had some issues on more complicated moves, but they weren't anything that I couldn't pick up after watching her.
4. This is a solid workout; I really felt like I had worked out, unlike the other 10-minute solution DVDs I own. Again, it wasn't super-high intensity, but it was a good solid workout.
5. Breaking this up into 5 10-minute segments really made the time fly by; for some reason it's mentally easier for me to complete this way!
6. You can customize your workout by playing any of the segments in any order, or you can do them all for a complete workout.
Needs improvement:
1. If you are seriously uncoordinated, you will have problems with the moves in the Knockout Body Blast, Fat Attack, and Ultimate Upper Body segments.
2. The upper body workout could have been a bit more intense.
3. It seemed like the Kickbox Cross-Train should be done first; Jessica actually shows you how to do the punches in this one. If you hit "Play All," it will be the next-to-last workout.
4. There really isn't a true warm-up to this workout. When I saw that, I stopped the DVD and did some light cardio for a few minutes, and then continued. There also isn't a real cool-down, either; I did my own with some stretches after doing all 5 segments.I really like this workout as a nice intermediate workout. I am recovering from a lower back injury, and just increasing the intensity of my workouts from doing 3 weeks of yoga and walking; this DVD made my back feel good, not broken! =D If you want to increase the intensity, you can buy heavier weighted gloves; if you want to decrease intensity, just don't use the weighted gloves and make your moves smaller and less intense. All in all, Jessica Smith makes this workout fun and invigorating. If you like the 10-Minute Solution series, you won't be disappointed with this one!
