(More customer reviews)If you're reading this, it's probably because you already love one of the top sitcoms of the 1970s, The Bob Newhart Show, so I won't wax poetic about the greatness of the program. Instead, I'll let you know that this was the 1973-1974 season, and it consists of the following episodes:
THE LAST TV SHOW Bob's group has a televised session. A classic!
MOTEL A pretty girl is after Bob.
BACKLASH Bob throws his back out just before a planned Mexican vacation.
SOMEBODY DOWN HERE LIKES ME A reverend takes Bob's advice...and it backfires.
EMILY IN FOR CAROL Emily fills in for Carol, and Bob's not happy about it.
HAVE YOU MET MISS DIETZ? Jerry and Howard both date the same woman.
OLD MAN RIVERS Carol dates her much older doctor.
MR. EMILY HARTLEY Bob feels inferior when he finds Emily's IQ is higher than his.
MUTINY ON THE HARTLEY Bob raises his rates, and his patients revolt.
I'M OK, YOU'RE OK, SO WHAT'S WRONG? Emily wants to see a marriage counselor.
FIT, FAT, AND 41 Bob goes on a diet.
BLUES FOR MR. BORDEN Howard is depressed by news of his son's new "uncle."

THE MODERNIZATION OF EMILY Emily feels old and decides to update her image. Yes, this is the classic "T-shirt with iron-on decal of lips and a cigarette" episode; aka: Chicken on a Stick.
THE JOBLESS CORPS Howard becomes Bob's patient after he loses his job.
CLINK SHRINK Bob's new patient is a parolee.
MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS Bob's new business manager has him living on a scanty allowance.
A LOVE STORY Howard falls for Bob's engaged sister.
BY THE WAY...YOU'RE FIRED Jerry decides to fire Carol.
CONFESSIONS OF AN ORTHODONTIST Jerry has a startling confession for Bob.
A MATTER OF PRINCIPAL Emily clashes with the school principal when she refuses to skip a student ahead two grades.
This was a great season for Bob. If you enjoy The Bob Newhart Show, buy this DVD set; you'll be glad you did.

The Bob Newhart Show - The Complete Fourth Season (1972) Review

(More customer reviews)The fourth season (1975-1976) of "The Bob Newhart Show" is right up there with the second season, and perhaps even a bit better. Some of the funniest episodes from the fan polls are from this season, and while there are perhaps a few fewer recognizable faces as guest stars, you will still see a few. The writers and cast by this point have both hit their stride, and the chemistry is phenomenal.
The Season is book-ended by appearances by Tom Poston as The Peeper, Bob's college buddy whom Emily can't stand. Of course, Tom would go on to be a regular in Bob's next sitcom "Newhart", and then there is the irony that Tom and Suzanne Pleshette would eventually get married. In-between, there are many events, including the death of Mr. Gianelli ("Death of a Fruitman"), Carol gets married ("Carol's Wedding"), Bob hosts an arrogant French psychologist ("Shrinks Across The Sea"), Bob forms a short-lived partnership with another psychiatrist ("Seemed Like a Good Idea At the Time") and many more.
Two of the funniest episodes ever are in this season with "Who Is Mr. X?", where Bob is ambushed by a morning talk-show host and is so flustered he reveals that one of his patients is a public servant. The other classic is "Over the River and Through the Woods", in which Bob gets out of a trip to Seattle over Thanksgiving by claiming that his patients need him. He ends up hosting a party with Jerry, Howard, and Mr. Carlin in which they all drink too much watching William and Mary's worst college football defeat, and make the funniest call for Chinese food ever recorded. I also very much like "Bob Has To Have His Tonsils Out, So He Spends Christmas Eve In The Hospital", and the title explains the plot to that one.
All in all, there are 24 episodes on three 2-sided DVDs, just the same as the first three seasons. Also like seasons 2 and 3, there are five episodes with commentary, but I have to say that the commentary has improved this season; perhaps because they have more people participating in them. I would still not call them great commentaries, but they are significantly better than the prior seasons. There is a short season 4 feature, and there is also a gag reel. In all, this is probably the best set of features they have included, but more importantly this is the season with the funniest episodes.

Newhart - The Complete First Season Review

(More customer reviews)They don't make them like they used to. This is one of TV's great comedies, anchored by Bob Newhart, and supported by an excellent cast that changed through the seasons. Season one has almost no Julia Duffy character - the ditzy, pampered maid - no Peter Scolari (the irritating yuppy) in love, and minimal Larry, Darryl and Darryl, the Marx brother like stooges who later become a major fixture on the show.
Still Tom Poston, the handyman, Kirk, the narcissistic cafe owner, and the wonderfully inept local Vermont Townsmen do a great job, and they just get better as the show develops. Truly intelligent family fare.
I really miss this one considering the current wasteland of staged "reality" shows, nasty and violent cop dramas, and smutty dysfunctional family comedies. You can sign me up for this one, and I can't wait for the other seasons.

The Rescuers (1977) Review

(More customer reviews)When a little orphan girl falls into the hands of Madame Medusa and sends a message in a bottle, the Rescue Aid Society answers in the form of Bernard (Bob Newhart) and Miss Bianca (Eva Gabor). What can two mice possible do to help the little girl? It turns out they can do a lot.
The movie starts on a reasonably funny note, as the rodent duo hop aboard an albatross to head for the swamps. Albatrosses are incredibly aerodynamic, but they are less then stellar at takeoffs and landings, and Orville the Albatross (Jim Jordan) proves no more adept than his brethren. After a plummet off a building that thrills Miss Bianca and petrifies Bernard, the journey has begun.
In the swamps the duo marshals the other animals to take on Madame Medusa (Geraldine Page), who needs the little orphan Penny (Michelle Stacy) to fit into a hole that leads to a cave. In the cave is located a quantity of jewels, but Madame Medusa is interested only in a huge diamond called the Devil's Eye. The Rescue Society mice and their swampland friends must overcome Madame Medusa and her aids Mr. Snoops (Joe Flynn) and a pair of alligators, who also frequently play babysitter to Penny.
Madame Medusa never realizes that the mice and swamp animals are trying to rescue Penny, which makes this movie more interesting to watch. As happens with many such movies, Madame Medusa's henchmen are cerebrally challenged and the animals are able to plan around them.
The ending of the movie contains a few surprises, and I found the end interesting. This movie also nicely sets up the excellent sequel "The Rescuers Down Under."
The real star of this clever movie is Eva Gabor. Bob Newhart gets top billing, but Eva was perfect for her role and seems to get the best lines in the movie. She is clever, funny and fearless as compared to Bernard's timid character. Only when Miss Bianca is in trouble does Bernard seem to rise to some measure of courage. There were a variety of other notable characters. Evinrude (James MacDonald) the dragonfly was cute and funny. George Lindsey was classic as Deadeye the Rabbit. Other supporting characters gave this movie depth and interest.
The art of this movie is also unusual in that the artist drew some of the characters in a rough style. I am unsure of the reason, but I found the art style to initially be distracting. I eventually became accustomed to the style and no longer noticed it as the movie went on. The music was also notable. A song from this movie was nominated for an Academy Award.
This movie is clever and funny. In places the movie is tense and suspenseful. There are a few places where the alligators are a little bit scary, but I believe this movie should be suitable for all family members in line with the movie's G rating. I would recommend this movie for any collection of family-oriented movies and for those who collect animated movies. Most families will want to see this movie more than once.
