I was there at the dawn of the G1 Series, and have seen almost every other (Japanese) Transformer series that followed, including the very bad attempts at adapting a few of these series for the U.S. Though none of these series were on par with even the slowest/silliest G1 Episodes! Beast Wars, & Transformers: Armada were fun, for the most part and had some of the "spirit" of the G1 series, but weren't quite there. Now we have the newest series: Transformers Animated. I saw some of the early designs for the "new" versions of the classic characters at the San Diego ComicCon a few years ago, and thought that they might be a little too cartoony, but they still looked kind of cool. Although, I still cannot stand Optimus Prime with a mouth!!! Anyway, I started watching this series with my nephews, and found myself really enjoying the stories (simple as they are), and the animation as well. The first season is good, and the second season is a bit better. So, if you haven't watched any of this series, please give it a try. You might enjoy it more than you think you would!

Ice Road Truckers: The Complete Season Three (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)I watched this show on the History Channel and decided that I would like to have a copy of it so I could watch it again.
The show follows several truckers who haul freight in Alaska. They mainly follow the Dalton Highway from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. The show is primarily concerned with trips taken during the winter season when the roadway freezes over. Sometimes, freight is hauled over frozen lakes and rivers, and there is danger of the trucks falling through the ice.
The worst thing about watching the show on the air is that just at a very suspenseful moment, the viewer is abruptly thrust into a commercial. Consequently, the best thing about the video disks is the absence of commercials.
At the time of this writing, there are four seasons of "Ice Road Truckers," of which this is the third. Season four is currently being shown on The History Channel. If you are a fan of the show, I recommend this collection.

Prince & Me 4: Elephant Adventure (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)I haven't been crazy about the past "Prince and Me" movies, partly because the acting was weak and they had corny plotlines. I particularly was disappointed with Prince and Me 3: A Royal Honeymoon, so I wasn't sure what to expect with the fourth installment in the series.
Fortunately, Prince & Me 4: Elephant Adventure is far superior to its predecessors. I don't what changed - the director and main actors are all the same - but it's an almost entirely different film. In Prince & Me 4: Elephant Adventure, Edvard, Paige, and Soren go to the Kingdom of Sangyoon to attend a royal wedding. However, en route, they uncover a love affair, lose an elephant, and save a hill tribe. The plot was both action-packed and emotionally engaging - something to satisfy the boys and girls.
Chris Gere (King Edvard) and Kam Heskin (Queen Paige) will never be my favorite actors, but they seem to have really found themselves in this movie. They're funny, energetic, and confident. Ben Miller as Soren has also morphed from a boring government advisor to a comedic sidekick. He easily had some of the best lines in the movie. The new Asian characters, from Princess Myra to the combative Rayen, are also lively and add to the movie.
The Prince & Me 4: Elephant Adventure's production quality is also a lot better. There's no cheap ski cabins and grainy shots of animals as in Prince and Me 3: A Royal Honeymoon. For the scenes in Sangyoon (which is loosely based on Burma, but mixes several Southeast Asian cultures), the cast and crew actually went to Thailand. The sets for the palace buildings are impressive, considering that they were probably built from scratch. Best of all were the jungle scenes, filmed in rainforests. The movie also has a lot of animals, including elephants and orangutans.*
Even if you were disappointed with the past "Prince & Me" movies, I do suggest you give this one a try. It makes the previous "Prince & Me" movies look amateurish. Highly recommended for families and couples who want to watch a romantic comedy, mixed with a bit of adventure.
* There is a brief scene in the movie when Paige rides an elephant. I wanted to make sure viewers are aware that elephants often go through horrible rituals in order to domesticate them. Therefore, if you go to Asia, you should avoid riding elephants and not support such practices. However, despite the DVD box cover, the elephant-riding scene in Prince & Me 4: Elephant Adventure is short - only a few seconds - so I guess the movie directors realized they shouldn't try to promote elephant-riding.

When i first saw it on nick for the world premire, i hated it. first they show too much of that dumb patchy the pirate. and the movie is so boring. all that happens is spongebob makes decorations, gets locked in a freezer, and stays in tunnels. and the secrets are so cheezy. i would not recomend getting this movie. i would recomend getting the first spongebob movie, which is 100% better. if you were planning on getting truth or square, i would watch it on nickelodian first.

The Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Chipettes Review

(More customer reviews)This is a fantastic collection of episodes featuring the Chipettes (Brittany, Jeanette, and Eleanor) from the 1980s "Alvin & The Chipmunks" animated series . . . but hopefully Paramount and Bagdasarian Productions will heed the call of Chipmunk fans and release a second set of episodes starring the Chipettes, namely those that haven't aired in years.
The omission of the Chipettes' Story (an episode about their origins in Australia) is especially glaring. I'd also like to see the following episodes in a future Chipettes DVD (perhaps to coincide with the upcoming Chipmunks Squeakel, which features the Chipettes):

Queen of the High school Ballroom
Hearts and Flowers
The Legend of Sleeping Brittany
The Princess and the Pig

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)Are you ever in the mood for something fresh and original? Are you tired of all the safe movies designed for the masses? Well, take a trip through the mirror of Doctor Parnassus. Terry Gilliam is a love him or hate him type of director, but for some reason I'm more of in the middle. I like half or so of his films and just don't get the appeal of the others. In this case, I loved just about every second of it.
Most people know that this was Heath Ledger's last role and that he died during the filming process, but what surprised me was how much he is actually in the movie. I would say around 50% of it. His performance is really good here as expected. He totally dropped the Joker influence completely and showed us once again that we were looking at a guy who had just begun to scratch the surface of his talent. Christopher Plummer (Doctor Parnassus) and Tom Waits (Satan) both turn in equally excellent acting showcases. Even newcomer Lily Cole does a good job and is very nice to look at to boot. Verne "Mini-Me" Troyer is not the best actor in the world, but he seems to be trying hard and is given a couple of good lines. Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell fill in the gaps that Ledger could obviously not. Depp gets the least amount of time, but all three bring the right amount skill to each "tribute" version of Ledger's character. Since Ledger was able to film all the reality parts before his death, his ever changing look could easily be explained in the fantasy realm.
The visuals and music are wacky as can be, but in a good way. It's nice to see so much imagination and unique storytelling in modern cinema. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is not for everyone, but I think most who give it a shot will find themselves lost in the the mind of one stange filmmaker.

Latino flair and hilarious delivery, from his voice impressions to jokes about his weight or personal issues, he knows how to get the audience laughing from beginning to end. There is no slow down in deliver, Iglesias is just hilarious!
Iglesias is known from being the finalist of the fourth season of "Last Comic Standing" in 2006 but in 2007, it was the success of his 2nd special Comedy Central 2007 DVD "Hot & Fluffy" (which sold over 300,000 copies) which would propel Gabriel Iglesias as a comedian that can sell out live performances and also comedy DVD's.
Earlier in the year, Iglesias released a double album CD titled "We Luf Fluffy" from performances from 2006 & 2008 and now he returns with a new DVD titles "I'm not Fat...I'm Fluffy" which was recorded in El Paso.

On his latest DVD, "I'm Not Fat...I'm Fluffy", Iglesias is literally on top of his game delivery joke after joke. From sharing stories of his return to El Paso and talking about a time he got drunk and ended up at an alternative gay bar to his first major gift from Nickelodeon to jokes about his personal life with his girlfriend and her son, Gabriel Iglesias's performance is just hilarious and magnificent.This time around, because of the family experiences that he has to share, these are situations that people can relate to and again, the voices he does is just top notch as he is able to switch voices on command and just be surprised when you hear it.
But you cold tell that his relationship with his girlfriend's son Frankie has brought new life to his routine and the fact that he can take those personal experiences and make them funny is just what makes the "Fluffy Man" so wonderful to watch on stage and he doesn't have to get nasty or profane to make the audience laugh.
VIDEO & AUDIO:
"Gabriel Iglesias - I'm Not Fat...I'm Fluffy: Live From El Paso" is presented in widescreen. There are several angles closeup, stagewise, behind the audience and from a stage angle to showcase the audience at the front. But overall, editing is well-done and stage setup is simple with pretty cool looking for the backdrop at the Plaza Theatre in El Paso, Texas. Simple and clean. Lighting is well-done and for the most part, editing is good, no quick cuts to make the viewer dizzy. Overall, a job well-done.
Audio is presented in Dolby Digital and audio is clear and understandable. Audience can be heard quite well. Personally, I had my receiver set on stereo on all channels to have a more immersive soundstage in the room.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
"Gabriel Iglesias - I'm Not Fat...I'm Fluffy: Live From El Paso" comes with the following special features:
* Deleted Scene: High School Reunion - (7:45) A deleted scene in which Gabriel had to stop his routine because parts of the towel (lint) was all over his face and thus it hurt the pacing. But Gabriel manages to take the situation and make it humorous for the audience.
* Fluffy's Friends Hit the Stage: Martin Moreno - (4:59) Martin jokes about getting older and also today's young Latino guys who are wearing tight pants, tight shirts, plucking their eyebrows and how they are looking effeminate.
* Fluffy's Friends Hit the Stage: Noe Gonzalez - (4:09) Noe's comedy is more adult-oriented. Noel jokes about his size and the concept of size.
* Onstage Q&A With the Fans - (8:07) Gabriel Iglesias answers questions from his fans.
JUDGMENT CALL:
Gabriel Iglesias is definitely one of the most entertaining comedians today. Where Latino comedians such as George Lopez and Paul Rodriguez represented the 80's and 90's, Gabriel Iglesias is a comedian that entertains people of all ages. From jokes about video games and his family to jokes about sweating on stage and how it starts to smell like chicharones. He just makes you laugh and laugh some more and this is what I found most interesting, this is probably one of the few Comedy Central DVD's, if not the first where the comedy routine is quite clean. Granted, he may be saying things in Spanish but in English... it's a clean routine.
If anything, this is a comedian who cares about his fans and he tells everyone straight up, if you see him at a restaurant, say hi. How he is onstage and in real life are the same person and the fact that he gives that Q&A after his performance in order to get the fans a chance to know more about him, goes to show how Iglesias is such a class act. Positive personality but knows how to make the audience laugh...he's a talented comedian.
Also, I have to say that "I'm Not Fat...I'm Fluffy: Live from El Paso" was a performance where he manages to keep the same excitement going from beginning to end. His delivery is smooth, continuous and for the most part, just fantastic.
There's nothing negative about this Comedy Central DVD at all. If you thought "Hot & Fluffy" was a phenomenal DVD, then you have to give "I'm Not Fat...I'm Fluffy: Live from El Paso" a try because this is a fantastic comedy DVD.
Highly recommended!

Bandslam (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)Take a chance on this unexpected gem, do, and never mind that you may have gone "Uh oh!" when you first noticed Vanessa Hudgens's name on the billing (although, okay, I did sneakily like the first HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL). I walked into BANDSLAM unawares, didn't really know what it was about, and I ended up pleased and tremendously entertained. I guess that's when the taste is sweetest, when you're not expecting too much. BANDSLAM has more in common with NICK & NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST than it does with HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL.
Gaelan Connell, I haven't seen him before, but he seems a natural at playing the nervous, ill-fitting-in, fumbly role and, somewhere, a threatened Michael Cera has to be biting his fingernails. This kid is also glib enough that he even reminds me of vintage young John Cusack. Connell plays iPod-attached misfit Will Burton who is newly moved to Lodi, New Jersey, and he's actually glad to be in the Garden State, so you get an idea of how miserable his past existence must have been. He now attends Van Buren High School, where he learns that the biggest event is the Bandslam, this annual Tri-State Battle of the Bands (winner gets a record deal).
Will loves Indie rock; he regularly writes to David Bowie in this thoroughly one-way correspondence relationship. Will also happens to be a walking encyclopedia of rock & roll knowledge, and this may or may not have something to do with his being befriended by the very cool and popular ex-cheerleader Charlotte (Aly Michalka, of the pop duo Aly & AJ). Charlotte fronts a lowly garage band, and she dreams of competing on Bandslam, although her band would have to contend with her school's own juggernaut rock group, Ben Wheatly & the Glory Dogs (Ben Wheatly, by the way, is Charlotte's ex). Will, thru no fault of his own, becomes the manager of Charlotte's tiny band. Juuuust a bit out of his depth, he's got eight weeks to get good at this gig before the big Battle of the Bands swings around. For Will Burton, it's time to come out of his shell.
Will also meets Sa5m (Hudgens, branching out from sweetness and light). Sa5m - the "5" is silent - is quirky and brooding and talks a bit like MTV's Daria. Sa5m also has a secret. She and Will become partners in a classroom project, and one of my four best moments in the movie has to do with Will's part of the project. The other three moments? They're all musical numbers and performed by Will and Charlotte's band.
BANDSLAM is a coming-of-age movie and it isn't vanilla or moronic, and you could've knocked me over with a feather when I later realized this was a PG-rated film. But, yeah, looking back, I don't remember any profanity. Or gross-out content or mean-spiritedness for its own sake. Instead there's an emotional weight, a passion for music and an edginess and tons of smart screenplay. There's even possibly the most awkward first kiss in history. There isn't a bad performance, only varying shades of very good and terrific. It helps that there's a complexity to the characters. Gaelan Connell, endlessly relatable, easily carries the film. Aly Michalka comes in and blows me away, and I love that there are different sides to her unpredictable character, and a bite. And she has pipes, stronger than Vanessa Hudgens'. It's hard not to rock out to her rendition of Steve Wynn's "Amphetamine." Meanwhile, Vanessa Hudgens steps a bit out of her comfort zone, and I liked it. I didn't think Hudgens and emo would work, and yet it does.
And Lisa Kudrow is Lisa Kudrow, and that's always a good thing for the movie audience.
It wouldn't have worked so well if the music hadn't been so great. The actors sing the songs and play the instruments, and is it me or does that bass player remind you of a young Stephen King? I love that the little garage band develops its own sound, and "I Can't Go On, I'll Go On" is an absolutely inspired name for a rock band. Cameron Crowe will probably appreciate "I Can't Go On, I'll Go On." John Hughes probably would have liked this movie. I always like it when the nerd makes good.
DVD Special Features: the "Making Of" documentary (21 minutes long); commentary track with Director Todd Graff and actors Aly Michalka, Vanessa Hudgens and, showing up late (he was at the beach), Gaelan Connell; nine deleted scenes with optional director's intro (including Aly Michalka's brief acoustic version of "Amphetamine," the full rendition of Charlotte's ex-boyfriend serenading her with "Pretend," and the cute "Shredding" scene); Honor Society's music video "Where Are You Now"; and Vanessa Hudgens performing "Everything I Own" with the band.

Scooby Doo: Camp Scare Review

(More customer reviews)This is an excellent Scooby Doo. It is by far one of the most faithful to the old series I have seen in a long while. It is creepy, funny, and of course mysterious. I like the relationship dynamics between the characters. The updated animation and the story pull out all the stops. The fact that the mystery does not wind up involving the supernatural is wonderful. It is just like the old series. I don't like it when they take something pure and put a different spin on it. My 9 year old daughter and I curled up and enjoyed the heck out of this one. We were both trying to guess who the bad guys were all through the show. THIS ONE IS A KEEPER!

Scooby Doo: Abracadabra-Doo Review

(More customer reviews)Nice to see Scooby-Doo alive and well in this 2010 new movie. The major change is that Matthew Lillard from the Scooby live action movies, fills in as the voice of Shaggy. I always thought Matthew was the best of the characters of those somewhat bizarre movies, and here, he's more than adequate but no Casey Kasem.
The mystery: a flying half-lion, half-bird monster terrorizes a school for magicians where Velma's sister, who's got a crush on the Shagmeister, elicits the gang's help. A little tension develops between Daphne and Fred over his goo-goo eyes for Whirlen Merlin the Magician's assistant.
It has all the traditional Scooby trappings- with lots of potential suspects, lots of like creepy, 'reepy' settings- a giant castle, a dark isolated forest, an island haunted by another monster, trap doors, towers, colorful artwork, Scooby and Shaggy silliness, a few tunes, and a mystery to solve. We prefer solvable mysteries versus supernatural ones.
A cute cartoon plays during the opening credits of the feature cartoon (a novel idea) with a bouncy song that got the kiddoes dancing.
Our children, ages 3 & 6, loved it; although, we fast fowarded for the younger one, the extra spooky scenes on the 'ghostly' island, but overall the writers resolve it nicely for kids' sensiblities. As adults, growing up with SD, we liked it a lot for what it is. This one rates somewhere between "Chillout Scooby and Where's my Mummy?". 4-1/2*.

(More customer reviews)"The Girl Who Played with Fire" - I did not read this second book in the Millennium trilogy so the movie was all new to me. Lisbeth Salander (perfectly delineated by Noomi Rapace, a great fit for the part)has been absent from Sweden for a year since we last met her in "Tattoo" living a life of luxury in various countries. She buys an apartment in Stockholm, but no one knows about it. The sexually ambivalent Lisbeth wants to get her dossier from her sadistic guardian, Bjurman, and when he isn't forthcoming, she warns him he may get another harsh dose of the previous punishment she doled out to him.
Meanwhile the movie follows a second track of narrative. Mikael Blomkvist (well-acted by Michael Nygvist), publisher of the muckraking magazine Millennium, has hired a free lancer to write an article about sex traffickers and the johns that are involved in the trade. He intends to out some of the prominent johns.
The two parallel stories are like procedural crime tales, and at a crucial stage, the two narratives intersect. There's violence, sex, gore, fires, spies, car chases, torture scenes, and suspense as we follow the protagonists. Lisbeth always seems to be immersed in intrigue, and nasty stuff. There's some computer wizardry in this one, but not as much as in the first film. She's forced on the run from the law because she's accused of three murders.
Lisbeth's cruel father whom she has torched as a child comes blazing back in this sequel.
It ends in a cliffhanger that will entice viewers into seeing the third film in the series this fall.
The film is excellent, chilling, and absorbing, but I liked the first one better because it was more focused and involved more interaction between the two principals; it was more human and more touching than this one.
Lisbeth is as tough and wily as ever. There is superb acting and cinematography. The movie is in Swedish with English sub-titles which means it won't be seen by a wide American audience although it deserves to be. I have an uneasy feeling that when the American versions are made, they won't be nearly as good as these fine films partly because these two stars are perfect for their parts. It's an intricately plotted, labyrinthine, tantalizing mystery. It can be a standalone thriller even if you haven't read the novel.
