The Bar Method Body - Fat Free Review

The Bar Method Body - Fat Free
Average Reviews:

I love this video. Its great the first few sessions because she explains everything very detailed, but after you get everything down pat the video becomes annoying. I usually have the remote in one hand to fast-forward through her explaining how to do a move. But it's well worth it. My thighs and butt have never sizzled so well. The best part is that I am starting to say bye-bye to my cellulite. I have cellulite on the back of my thighs and as of today its not very visible! I have used this video for two months and have seen MAJOR Results!!! My legs, butt, and abs still feel that next day pain! I recommend this video to everyone who wants to tone up his or her body!

The Bar Method Body - Designer Sculpting Review

The Bar Method Body - Designer Sculpting
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Designer Sculpting provides an excellent full body workout designed to tone your muscles rather than build them up. Instructor Burr Leonard works with 3 other certified Bar Method instructors, one of whom shows modifications of all exercises.
A simple 5-minute warmup begins the workout. Next comes the upper body section (8 minutes), which uses light dumbbells. You will do several different moves to target biceps, shoulders, and triceps. [For those who are familiar with the Lotte Berk Muscle Eats Fat video, you will notice that the upper body portion of this workout is almost exactly the same, as the Bar Method derives from Lotte Berk.] Barre work comes next (two of the instructors use a chair). You will begin in a wide stance and perform several sets of plies; the exercises are then repeated with your legs shoulder-width apart and feet together, on your toes. Again, this section is very similar to Lotte Berk, but you will perform a wider variety of exercises with more repetitions.
Following the standing leg work, it's on to the floor for a tough move known as "the pretzel." With one leg bent in front of you, the other behind, you will raise your leg and make small movements to really target your hips and buttocks areas (similar to Callanetics)--I really felt this the next day! This section is also about 5 minutes long. Ab work comes next: in this 5-minute section, you will perform small movements while keeping your abs scooped with your navel pressed toward the floor. You will then move on to bridge pose to work both your abs and you butt; this section is an additional 5 minutes as you perform bridge with several different foot positions. The workout ends with a 5-minute stretch to release your muscles.
I liked that this workout challenged me without leaving me feel exhausted. I also enjoyed being able to target both my arms and my legs without having to use heavy weights. This is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a different type of full-body workout.

When I purchased this dvd and the resistance bands, it was my goal to gradually gain strength. Using this program, I was able to do so without straining my muscles or injuring myself as I have with other things I've tried. I appreciated the approach used where beginners do a limited number of repetitions. Even with this limitation, within one week my posture had improved and I definitely felt I was gaining upper body strength. After six weeks I was the strongest I've ever been. If, like me, you have never succeeded in following an exercise program, this may be what you're looking for. At age 58, I'm finally feeling fit and strong. I do have two suggestions: 1. Write a list of the exercises to follow on days when you don't have time to go through the full dvd. 2. Take that list and your resistance bands with you when you travel. The key to success with this program is finding time to do the exercises every day. Finally, don't feel discouraged if it takes you a few days to learn to use the bands and to follow the directions on the dvd. Your efforts will pay off!

The Bar Method Accelerated Workout Review

The Bar Method Accelerated Workout
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the brand new (2009) set of DVDs at[...]. One is "Change Your Body" and the other is "Accelerated Workout." I am 60 years old and have tried many at-home workout videos and a few gym classes over time. I know that most of the people who are Bar Method enthusiasts are much younger and really into sculpted, trimmed, energetic bodies, but given that Burr, the instructor (yes, the beautiful woman pictured on the cover), is 61 years old, I was very encouraged to try it myself. I haven't moved up to the accelerated workout yet, but the pace and intensity of "Change Your Body" really works for me. I truly can feel changes in my body, particularly in my legs, buttocks and abs (which have been weak). I feel much stronger every day, and have more energy. I've been dragging around with chronic fatigue for years, and this is helping beyond my expectations. Also, I've been slowly dropping excess weight because of the fat burning benefits. However, I ready on Burr's blog that the beneficial effects of fat burning are generally for people who are only about 30 pounds overweight. There are some people my age and older that I would not suggest try this without going to a studio first to learn about appropriate modifications, but for those in relatively good shape who what to improve their bodies, I find the Bar Method workout DVD to be really excellent. And of course, the younger people are going crazy for it. By the way, the DVD SET costs only $30 and can be purchased separately at $20 each. More than worth the money, even in these "tighen the belt" times.

The pace of the Bar Method class picks up to maximize caloric burn both during and following this total body 50-minute workout. The class starts with a warm-up that includes free-weight exercises and push-ups and proceeds to challenge you with series of bar exercises guaranteed to give your upper legs and buns a long, lean, lifted, trimmed-down look. The second part of the class includes core sculpting, the Bar Method's sexy "back-dancing" exercise, and a peaceful series of final stretches. Burr's fellow performers, Catherine Wendel, Jen Hendrick and Jane Culliford are teacher/owners of Bar Method studios in Chicago, New Jersey and New York.

Shape Toning Workout: Bikini Body All Year-Round (2005) Review

Shape Toning Workout: Bikini Body All Year-Round (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This DVD consists of four 15 minute sections:
1)BUTT & HIPS: effective standing lunge and squat variations with weights and floorwork.
2)ABS: innovative crunch variations and reverse curls that work upper and lower abs and obliques
3)THIGHS: all standing exercises (no weights). Not your average squats and lunges - interesting combos and balance moves
4)UPPER BODY: you'll need a chair and 2 sets of weights. You'll work biceps, chest, triceps, shoulders and back.
You can choose each segment individually, pick a few or just let the DVD play all the segments and if you do that the order is how I listed it above. you can also select the order of exercises within each section or let the DVD shuffle the order.
Each toning section has 8-10 exercises and they are very effective BUT there is a pause between each set. The workout stops and you see a Shape screen with a beach. Then it goes back to the workout and the next exercise. The pause is only a few seconds but it's annoying and makes the workout choppy. I guess it has to be that way so you can select the order of exercises. One exerciser shows modifications and there are tips that pop up onscreen.
There is also a 20 minute aerobics section. I didn't do that, so I can't comment. I wish there was a stretch section instead of the aerobics. There is a warm-up and cool down before each segment, but it's less than a minute. I felt I needed a good stretch, especially after the legwork.

Slim Sculpt Review

Slim Sculpt
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a big fan of Ellen Barrett's, and have been for a couple of years. My favorite routine of her's, up to now, was the one she created for FitTV's "All Star Workouts" called Zen Sculpt. My next favorite, also from "All Star Workouts" was her Slow-robics. This new DVD, "Slim Sculpt" is from Ellen's Buff Girl Fitness productions, and is a melding of both of the "All Star" routines! It is a great workout from start to finish, and is very challenging and tough. It is Ellen at her very best.
A little note about Ellen's style...she isn't for those who want a bulky physique. She is more about elongating and strengthening the muscles for a lean and feminine dancer's body. Her routines blend Plilates and weight/resistant training, with cardio integration. The entire program works all areas of the body--the powerhouse, the heart center, and the limbs. So, you burn calories, build muscle, and stretch through each move smoothly and gracefully. There is a great warm up, followed by the main body of the routine using light hand weights, which has plenty of her signature plies and "butterfly" moves and some balance challenges, with mat work (powerhouse and glutes) and a cool down/stretch at the end.
Working out with Ellen is not easy, but it is gentle to the mind/body. If you want hard-core cardio, with lots of jumping around and kick-boxing, she's not for you. If you want to look like Cathe Friedrich, Ellen won't get you there. However, if you want to be toned, flexible, long and lean, she's your gal. Done on a regular basis, you will see results.
If you want to see what this workout is all about, watch Ellen's "All Star Workout" segments, then think of a combination of each routine. That's what this is, and for me, it's perfect!

Self: Bikini Ready Fast (2005) Review

Self: Bikini Ready Fast (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This workout is led by Ellen Barrett, who is best known for her appearances in the Crunch Pilates workouts. She is back with two fellow exercisers in this workout filmed on a beach in Mexico.
This workout is about 30 minutes long and contains 3 segments. I would describe it as more of a toning video with pilates inspired movements. The first segment is more toning, you will see 3 giant sets of exercises, each performed slightly different. The first includes traditional bicep curls, side lateral raises for shoulders, then squats some of which include some of which include some standing ab work. The second set has more biceps, this time hammer curls, side lateral raises for shoulders but with a slightly different twist, and step squats. The third set has angled bicep curls, overhead presses and pulsing squats.
The second segment has more pilates inspired moves, plenty of standing ab work using light weights such as torso circles and ribcage reaches. This segment also includes more toning exercises for arms, but ones that are more commonly seen in pilates work like the zipup, half moons, arm slices, lat pulldowns, figure 8 arms, etc. You will also see some plies, pushups and static lunges in this segment.
The third segment is the shortest of the three and does not use any weights. You start with plyo jumps, basically jumping from one leg to the other, then you will do another set of jumps this time holding briefly and then returning to standing while on the one leg. While you are standing on one leg you will do "figure 8 knees" which are pretty self explanatory. One legged squats follow, and then you repeat the series a few more times. Then you finish off with standing knee cross crunches before cooling down.
There is also a bonus pilates abs routine that Ellen teaches on her own. It is short and sweet, not particularly challenging though.
Overall, not a bad workout. I would recommend it for beginner/intermediate levels mostly or it would be good for days you are not up to anything strenuous. There is a nice variety of exercises, plus some new ones that are interesting. Ellen as always is a very pleasant instructor. The scenery of the video is pleasing to the eye as well.

Marisa Tomei: Core & Curves Review

Marisa Tomei: Core and Curves
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I first saw that Marisa Tomei was coming out with a workout DVD I laughed, or maybe "snorted with derision" would be more accurate . . . I love Marisa Tomei as an actress, but I just felt like the world didn't need another "celebrity" workout.
But, I was wrong.
This workout is actually really fun, well produced, seems to be very effective, and has that all too rare "it" factor that makes me want to keep coming back to it over and over again . . . no "dread factor" here. The instructor offers great cuing, and Ms. Tomei is personable and demonstrates good form.
As to the workout itself, it's not exactly traditional toning, but it's not Pilates either . . . it is very core-focused, and does work on lots of little accessory muscles that aren't normally targeted in more traditional toning workouts. There are no deep lunges or squats, but there are quite a few plank-based moves as well as traditional push-ups. Interspersed throughout all three workouts are little "speed and agility" bursts of skipping, hopping and side-stepping, so there is a (albeit minimal) cardio factor as well. The DVD includes a resistance band that you use looped around your ankles in quite a few of the moves - this definitely increases the burn, and is not "gimicky" at all.
There are three individual workouts. The first is about 25 minutes long, and targets the entire body, with a very long and intense ab section. The second workout, which is about 20 minutes long, is all about the legs, although it does work the core as well. The final workout, about 15 minutes long, is a mini total body workout, with some exercises borrowed from the first two workouts, but some other unique exercises as well. There is a brief warm-up and cool-down/stretch included when you play each individual workout. The "custom workout" option is a nice tool that allows you to play the individual workouts back-to-back, in whichever order you choose. In that mode, the warm-up in only played once, at the beginning, and the cool-down/stretch is only played once, at the end of the workout.
All in all, I must say I was surprised by how fun and effective this workout is. I am an intermediate level exerciser, and I found most of this workout very doable, but still challenging.

Fabulously Fit Moms: Total Body Workout Review

Fabulously Fit Moms: Total Body Workout
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Unlike the previous review, this review is for the actual workout dvd listed. My baby is ~8 months old, and while I have all but the last 10 lbs off(my body hangs onto the last 10 lbs after all 3 of my kids, until I'm done nursing them), I am always on the look-out for quick, no-nonsense workouts that are easy to follow along with, to fit into my busy days. I am happy to say, this one definitely fits the bill.
The workout contains a warm-up, 3 cardio-toning segments, a cool-down & stretches and is ~30 minutes in length. Recommended weights for this workout are 3-5 lbs weights. I would suggest 3 lbs for those who haven't used weights before or haven't used them in awhile and 5 lbs for those who are used to lifting weights. The first cardio/toning segment combines kickboxing cardio w/short segments of toning(ie. lower body exercises such as plies, squats, and lunges w/upper body using weights at the same time to get your heartrate up). The second segment combines Latin style dance cardio(think mambos, v-steps & hip flares) also combined w/similar upper & lower body toning. The last cardio segment is classic/athletic cardio w/toning. Very easy to follow along to, cueing is off in a couple spots but the moves are basic and not hard to get back on track. My heartrate really got up, and I was sweating so much by the end.
Jennifer Nicole Lee is living proof that it is possible to get back in shape after having kids. Very friendly personality, not too much chattiness, but funny at times(it's important to have fun). She says a few times about that we're making the most of our time and in the kickboxing segment she mentions that Rocky needs to watch out! lol This Fabulously Fit: Total Body Workout has made it to my must-have list & will never leave my house (and that's saying something for the huge vidiot i am).
you can find a 1 minute preview clip at collagevideo.com (do a title search)
There is also a bonus segment on the dvd (~10-12 minutes) that's part of her soon-to-be-released workout(next month) Fabulously Fit Moms: Lower Body Burn - Featuring Jennifer Nicole Lee. If the 10 minute clip(warm-up + standing work) is any indicator on how the rest of the workout is(my legs were jell-o), it'll be a must-have also.

Callanetics 10 Years Younger in 10 Hours - Amazon.com Exclusive Review

Callanetics 10 Years Younger in 10 Hours - Amazon.com Exclusive
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First point: I am a guy, in my early 40s and out of shape - years of beer and fun have taken their toil.
I have tried weightlifting - it is like watching the wimp from the Charles Atlas comic book advertisements - not my bag.
I have tried aerobics - also called "fat man bouncing." I hate the elliptical machine and the treadmill.
This video, practiced in the privacy of your home, will get your flab firm in quick time
I have owned and worked out with this video for a number of years and recently purchased and began using the DVD version.
Give this workout a chance and stay with it. In my late 20s and early 30s I used this video to quickly get in shape and shave off inches of the ubiquitous male beer belly.
Over the years, I added on weight and like many men my age, found the relaxing comfort of the television and brisk workout from the remote control each evening to be my preferred workout.
After a thorough scolding from my doctor, it was time to get back in shape. I surfed to Amazon and bought the DVD version of Callanetics.
There are a few things to take into account when using the newly issued DVD.
1.Watch the thing all the way through, perhaps two times to really learn the exercises.
2.Ignore the 1980s fashions and bad music. That isn't what you are here for.
3.The newest version of the DVD is chaptered, which helps you get through the idle chatter.
4.Focus on form before you focus on reps. Ignore the music and the chatter on the video and take time to ensure your legs, back, hands, etc. are in the correct place. By three or four workouts, your attention to form will make a tremendous difference.
5.After about 5 or 6 workouts, go ahead and turn off the sound and listen to what you need to in the background why you work out. I will occasionally return to the sound to help refresh form.
6.If you are severely out of shape, like I was, focus on just Callanetics for bit. Then after 12 or so hours (four weeks at three times a week.), incorporate a brisk walk or run on off days to really get the full fitness.
I have lost three inches in my waste and my "Dunlap" tire on my belly - that part of the middle aged male belly that creeps over the belt - is gone. After even the first hour, you will feel invigorated and relaxed.
The next day, you will feel the workout while walking up stairs or putting away dishes in the kitchen. This is no work out for wimps or just for women.
The sweat on my forehead and my raising heart during each workout will vouch for that.

Now you can actually look ten years younger in ten hours.Callan Pinckney, author of the revolutionary best-selling book Callanetics(a perennial New York Times Best-Seller), personally demonstrates her innovative deep muscle exercise technique that can literally shed years off your figure in hours without putting pressure on your back.Unlike other exercise programs that stress hard jerking motions, Callanetics is a series of small, gentle, precise motions consistently applied that activate the body's largest most powerful muscles to quickly tighten hips, buttocks, inner and outer thighs; flattenthe tummy; lift the bust and firm underarms and tone the entire body.It will also dramatically improve your posture. You will feel the difference after one hour and most people actually see a difference after two hours.By following the simple 60 minute Callanetics workout twice a week, the body you always dreamed about is only hours away.

Envy Girls - Workouts for the Spots That Really Count Review

Envy Girls - Workouts for the Spots That Really Count
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought "ENVYGirls" hesitantly. I had previously been dupped into purchasing Carmen Electra's "Aerobic Striptease" DVD (from the same producers) expecting a fun but somewhat effective workout, and have never forgiven myself since! Nonetheless, the reviews that I read on Amazon convinced me to take a chance on this one. And I am happy to say that I made the right decision!
This DVD is without doubt one of my favorite toning workouts. Period.
First off, as evidenced by the packaging, the production is first-rate. It is as clear and well-edited as any major Hollywood production, and the absolutely gorgeous island setting (South Pacific?? Carribean??) inspires me to work out even harder. You can practically feel the breeze coming off the ocean! :-) The music is GREAT, hip and modern; I love it! It's so refreshing to actually work out to a good soundtrack instead of the generic dance club beat that is so prevalent in exercise videos.
The entire concept of "ENVYGirls" is that of a "superteam of fitness" (their words, not mine), each one with a particularly good body part. Each girl then leads you through a 15-20 minute workout to help you get that particularly good body part. The parts are: Abs, Buns, Legs and Arms. There is an optional 4-min. warmup (it is the same on all four programs) and 5-min. express workouts for each program.
Make no mistake, this is not just an eye candy DVD a la Carmen Electra. It actually is a pretty effective strength workout. The moves are designed by celebrity trainer Michael Carson who is very knowledgable and inspiring but not drill sergeant-like (if you've ever seen "The Biggest Loser," think Bob, not Jillian!). Michael does a voiceover commentary on the warmup (as I preceeded this workout with cardio, I never really used the warmup) as well as a Trainer's Tips interview for each workout in which he guides you through correct form of some of the trickier exercises. Also, don't miss the Trainer Commentary Option on which you can have Michael give a voice over on both the Primary Workout and the 5 Min. Workout. He has a lot of important things to say, and don't worry, the music is still loud, and there is a repetition countdown on the screen, so you'll know how many reps you have left in a particular move!
ABS OF ENVY - My personal favorite! I still pull this one out from time to time, and I've owned this for over a year. When I initially viewed this program, I was skeptical because there are only a few crunches towards the end. However, when I did it, it was challenging, I broke a sweat, and when I went to stretch my abs at the end, they burned quite a bit! It utilizes a lot of standing abs moves, but if you concentrate on using your abs, your belly will become sculpted and flat and your waist will be cinched, giving you that hourglass effect. Done almost entirely standing with a few minutes of floorwork.
BUNS OF ENVY - Uses various squats (love that Helicopter Squat!), Lunges, Reverse Lunges (called dips in The Firm) and other moves to effectively shape your glutes and thighs. Done mostly standing with some floorwork about three-quarters into the workout.
LEGS OF ENVY - Uses lunges, plies, plyo jumps and even balance moves to give you shapely thighs and calves. Done entirely standing with stretching on the floor at the very end.
ARMS OF ENVY - Uses bicep curls, hammer curls and some fun, creative moves such as the Dumbbell Catch and the Gecko Pushup to work your upper body. Done mostly standing with some push-up variations and floor tricep work towards the end.
And Now For The Bad: The only real detriments that I could find: One- The packaging of the DVDs. Yes, plural. All four programs, unnecessarily, are recorded onto 4 separate DVDs. For anyone who wished to combine workouts, it can be quite annoying to have to switch DVDs and then sit through minutes of exercise advisement/legal jargon/Lionsgate material. Two-The repetiveness of the exercises. Though I found the exercises different and fun, each program actually contains about 7 minutes of moves that are repeated at least once halfway through. Depending on your attention span and the frequency with which you use this DVD, you may get bored quickly.
Three- The girls themselves. Though I found them pleasant enough, it is obvious that these girls are not fitness professionals and were simply cast due to their looks. Some viewers may find them a little Playboy-bunny-esque and not interesting. I simply was inspired to attain their physiques! If they bother you, you could always choose the voiceover option by Michael , who IS a fitness professional, and a charismatic one at that.
All in all, I highly recommend this DVD and don't think anyone who wants a great body will be dissapointed.

This is one of those fun, new programmable DVDs where you can mix and match the exercises in the order you want, and even do the same segment more than once. You can customize your workout from the warm-up (4 minutes), power cardio (11 minutes), upper body (12 minutes), lower body (11 minutes), abs & core (11 minutes) and cool-down (3 minutes) The bonus are Love Your Honeymoon (aka Strip 101), Walk Gracefully (posture tips), and Eat Smart (where I learned I should eat like a bear; i.e., salmon, nuts & berries!) The pre-programs come from the customized sections; they include "Strapless Dress" which gives you a week's worth of suggested exercises focusing on the upper body (3 days of upper body and 2 days of lower body) and "Hip Hugger Dress" which gives you a week's worth of suggested exercises focusing on the lower body (3 days of lower body and 2 days of upper body.) This DVD is a keeper!

Cindy Crawford - Next Challenge Workout Review

Compared to my Denise Austin and Kathy Smith videos, this tape looks like something that should be played on MTV. I find that I get so caught up in the sophisticated camerawork, unusual music, and funky backgrounds that it's sometimes hard to pay attention to what I'm doing. I really love the look and sound of this video and that's one of the main reasons I enjoy doing it. The cardio section is really intense, but seems too short. Her sequence of lunges, squats and other moves for the lower body is a killer routine. I haven't felt so sore in a long time, and I'm a runner! Definitely not for the faint-hearted or anyone with bad knees. She spends a lot more time on chest exercises than any other video I've used. I wish the abs section had fewer full-body situps; they're not great for the lower back and I think there are more effective moves that put less stress on that area. I found that the routine for arms didn't do much for me until I started using eight-pound weights for some of the exercises; however, I have to switch back and forth between eight-pound and five-pound weights since I am not strong enough to use the heavier weights with some of the exercises. Overall, this is a video I always enjoy using, primarily because it's so entertaining to watch and I love the music. (However, I'm always relieved when the lower body segment is over!) Although I don't feel I'm getting enough of a cardio workout, all the muscles in my body feel pleasantly tired and challenged afterwards.
