King Corn (Green Packaging) Review

King Corn (Green Packaging)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
King Corn is kind of like Super Size Me's little brother. It traces the pervasive influence of corn on modern America, including the obesity epidemic and the fact that Iowa is growing trillions of bushels of *non-edible* corn to continue receiving lucrative government subsidies. College buddies Ian and Curt, both from the east coast, discover that they both had distant relatives from the same small town of Greene, Iowa. Ian and Curt decide to go to Iowa and plant one acre of corn, following it through its lifecycle, including where it goes after the harvest.
The film starts off slowly as the reasons for the trip are explained. The prerequisite talking heads introduce some scary factoids about how Americans are literally made of corn; if you do a hair analysis, it's like a diet diary, and the vast majority of the American diet (corn-fed beef, fast foods and processed foods) contains corn derivatives. Much of the corn we ingest is in the guise of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), a cheaper alternative to sugar that is produced via a scary chemical conversion involving several toxic acids. HFCS has been directly linked to the current obesity crisis and its impact on Type II Diabetes (the body processes HFCS differently from table sugar). Prior to the 1970s, hardly any company used HFCS due to its high cost. But after then-Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz did away with the old New Deal market control policies in favor of rapid expansion in 1973, there was a constant surplus of cheap (and non-edible) corn, fueling the rapid expansion of the corn syrup industry. Here's a quick test: walk into any convenience store and count how many items contain corn, specifically corn syrup. The list includes obvious choices like soda and candy, but you'll also find HFCS in deli meats, breads, ketchup, pickle relish, spaghetti sauce, and cough syrup. Oh yes, and one main variety of corn grown in Iowa (Liberty) is genetically modified, as is at least one ingredient in HFCS manufacturing.
Corn production geared towards ethanol is briefly mentioned, but the majority of the focus in King Corn is on the impact of non-edible corn on the nation's food supply. In this respect, it's kind of a gentler version of Supersize Me; there's no shock value for the most part. Also mentioned is the disastrous consequence of converting cattle from grazing animals to force-fed confined ones. Cattle normally forage for a plant-based diet, but it is far more profitable to bring them up to market weight by forcing them to stand still and eat continuously. In addition, the acids present in corn cause deadly ulcers for the cows, who are slaughtered before developing acidosis. The end result is that 70% of the antibiotics in the US are used on livestock (antibiotics combat both the acidosis and the infections resulting from confinement). Literally everything at McDonald's contains corn: your hamburger is corn-fed, the bun contains HFCS, your soda contains HFCS, the French fries are fried in corn (or soybean) oil, and your ketchup and pickle contains HFCS. Ditto for most vending machine foods, frozen dinners, and anything you don't make from scratch. It's extremely difficult to escape buying foods containing corn, since a variety of pseudonyms are used, including baking powder, caramel color, dextrose, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, stearic acid, and vanilla, making it a nightmare for anyone with corn allergies.
Perhaps the most effective element is that of nostalgia. Ian and Curt also take time to find their long-lost relatives in Greene, and to reflect on the rapid changes in our recently agrarian society that have forced farmers to maintain massive farms harvesting non-edible corn. In other words, the farmer can't even feed himself with what he's growing. Without the hefty government subsidies, such large-scale corn operations would be out of business. They interview various farmers and ranchers who are disgusted with the system, but who have little real choice (one farmer says flatly, "We're growing crap!"). We're shown the evolution of farming equipment and of the family farm itself as a quaint reminder of the past; there are nostalgic shots of Main Street and hometown parades, quiet diners and local bars.
Ian and Curt's visual style is playful; the charts and graphs are hand-drawn, interspersed with stop-motion plastic farm toys to get the point across (and the dancing corn on the map of the US was great, too). The quirky soundtrack is a standout as well. DVD extras include some outtakes, a music video, bios, and some great 1950s-style educational clips. King Corn is a thought-provoking look at the old adage "You are what you eat," and boy, it's scary.

KING CORN is a fun and crusading journey into the digestive tract of our fast food nation where one ultra-industrial, pesticide-laden, heavily-subsidized commodity dominates the food pyramid from top to bottom corn. Fueled by curiosity and a dash of naivete, college buddies Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis return to their ancestral home of Greene, Iowa to figure out how a modest kernel conquered America. With the help of some real farmers, oodles of fertilizer and government aide, and some genetically modified seeds, the friends manage to grow one acre of corn. Along the way, they unlock the hilarious absurdities and scary but hidden truths about America s modern food system in this engrossing and eye-opening documentary. A graceful and frequently humorous film that captures the idiosyncrasies of its characters and never hectors (Salon), KING CORN shows how and why whenever you eat a hamburger or drink a soda, you re really consuming ... corn.

Leslie Sansone's Walk Slim - 4 Fast Miles (2-Disc Set)
Average Reviews:

I have tried many of Leslie's walking dvds, but I have to say that this one is by far the best. I have never worked up a sweat with any of her previous workouts. This one had me sweating and loving it. Her new studio set took me by surprise - it wasn't what I was used to -but after about 5 minutes I was so into the walking I didn't care what the set looked like. I love the intervals and the music this time was great. My favorite sections were the booster walking - which is really a jog. I did the entire workout all the way through - and had so much energy it made even my Monday morning blues disappear. This was is a KEEPER!!!!!!!!!!

No weights; no jumping around; not a lot of space needed. You don't even need to wear your shoes. Three different levels at about 20 minutes each make this exercise program so do-able. The exercises tone, strengthen and stretch you and make you feel so good. It may be a little "campy" for some - but stick with it. You will feel 100% better in less than two weeks.
I absolutely love it.

Beyond the Secret (2009) Review

Beyond the Secret (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok first of all I have been studying metaphysics and the law of attraction for over 20 years. Many deliberate manifestations so yes it does work. Oh and I do "get it" even if this review is negative. Sorry this movie was just not all that good.
I was hoping for another secret must like us fans of the movie "Aliens" have been wanting another "Aliens" and all squeals have fallen short.
And unfortunately this film falls short of what I was also wanting another "The Secret" the Original Edition (which I have watched at least 100 times.) Not the "Extended Edition" which should be named "We cut Ester Hicks/Abraham-Hicks out becuase we did not want to honor our royalty agreement any longer" The vibration and feeling it totally different. But I digress back to this film.
First off the production values are awful, bad green screen, the picture looks pixelated and it make me feel like they just don't care enough to do it right. If your going to ride on the success of the secret and sell to the same audience which is what they are attempting to do by calling it "Beyond The Secret" then you MUST have the same level of production and visual quality or you are going to disappoint people(becuase the secret was a pleasure to watch.) That's just smart marketing. Being what this movie is they should have given it a different name because the Secret is a hard act to follow.
Now for the content...becuase I don't mind watching a straight up lecture with a person standing at the podium shot on a home video camera if the content is good.
Next this is not really "Beyond" it more like "The Remedial Secret" or "Special Ed Secret" for people not ready to manifest on higher levels.
It starts with Bob Proctor basically says most of what he said in the secret but less of the important stuff on the subconscious mind.
Most of this movie is about getting you to take action rather than just doing the visualization. It makes it sound like more work which many people feel is what should be taught and thought that "The Secret" was just pie in the sky and not realistic and left that out. Yet funny how so many people have stories of manifestations including myself.
The truth is there are many different levels of Manifestation from those that require work to those that do not require anything but intent and desire(I personally enjoy the later the most) This film is for those that want to manifest on the first level and are not ready to move on to higher levels of manifestation yet in my opinion. I have manifested with work and really with almost none at all in life. So all levels have their place. But hey you have to walk before you can run and it all depends on your goals as well some do require physical work.
For me I did not find this all that informative (but I have been studying 20 years I did not learn much from "The Secret" but it really inspired me) So if you are new to this stuff you might learn some good things here.
To me it was not all that inspiring and actually rather limiting in terms of what is possible and how you can achieve it.
This film at times seems to seek to take the "Hows" back from the universe and get you to figure out the "Hows" yourself and one author even gives you very good process on how to do this by moving beyond your own limited thinking.
Let me sum it up this way. The way I found "The Secret" I had been studying Law of Attraction and out of the blue someone me sent me a link to a let's say free version of "The Secret" on the internet I watched it and was filled with joy and empowered. Right after I looked for "The Secret" Web site and ordered the DVD becuase I WANTED to pay them for that amazing, empowering work they produced. I bought several more copies until the pulled the "Extended Version Scam" Which totally turned me off. You can actually feel the vibrational difference between the two.
If today someone had sent me a link "Beyond The Secret" after watching it I would have just deleted it and be glad I did have to pay to see it.
Over all nothing has come close to the Original Secret Movie yet and I have seen and own almost all of them...
The Secret *****
The Secret Extended ***
The Secret Behind The Secret **** (This is the best for just Law of Attraction Information)
Pass It On *** (like this movie but focused more on business techniques/advice)
The Moses Code ** (Depressing in my opinion, not a feel good movie)
You can Heal Your Life **** (but the audio track was too low, maybe fixed now I hope?)
What the Bleep **** (Started this whole industry)
What the Bleep Down The Rabbit Hole ***** Great 6 hours on random play!
DeePak Chopra How to Know GOD **** (Great for a deeper view of the quantum filed and GOD)
If this movie is right for you then you will be attracted to it and get something from it. I personally feel your time would be better spent using Tony Robbins Get The Edge if you want practical first level manifestation information, 10 x the cost but worth every penny!

Blast Away the Pounds - Indoor Walk (2005) Review

Blast Away the Pounds - Indoor Walk (2005)
Average Reviews:

If you are just starting your work out regime or are looking for something a little more low impact Denise Austin Blast Away The Pounds Indoor Walk may be something you might want to look into. The DVD includes 3 complete 1 mile programs. This DVD includes something for everyone.
If you are just starting a work out program and aren't ready for something real high energy you might want to check out the Easy Walk. This segment is especially configured for people who don't exercise regularly. This is a fifteen minute walk.
The Fat Blasting Interval Walk is a fifteen minute cardio walk. This is a faster, more high energy walk exercise. This is a metabolism boosting exercise and it is the equivalent of one mile.
The Power Walk and Tone walk is a very intense walk for the people who enjoy power walking. This segment combines walking and body sculpting techniques. This also is a fifteen minute walk.
What is great about this DVD is that everyone can use this DVD and start at their own pace. If you are new to working out you can set your goals to one day complete one of the more advanced walks on the DVD. I have older family members who were able to complete one portion of this work out over the holidays. So if you are a power walker or just getting started this is a nice indoor workout.

The Biggest Loser Workout, Vol. 2 Review

The Biggest Loser Workout, Vol. 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like this even a little more than the first workout. I think it's possible for all levels to gain something from this. You can choose your own personal workout by choosing from the various segments here. Each segment is around 10 to 15 minutes and they all do different things like fat burning, flexibility and toning various muscle groups. Even better, if you are a woman there are segments that focus a lot on abs and thighs. Bob and Kim are enthusiastic and help you along, and it's nice to see real people (former contestants) perform the routines (instead of the always stick thin exercisers).
All you need to get started is a fair bit of room, weights, a stability ball and you can opt to use a medicine ball if you have one. Overall, it's a great workout that is made better by the customisation which I love. I really like it and have found already in the while since I've gotten this, that I'm feeling good. Hope you love it too.

Leslie Sansone: Walk at Home - The Big Burn- 2 Miles of Intervals Review

Leslie Sansone: Walk at Home - The Big Burn- 2 Miles of Intervals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been doing the WATP dvd's for almost a year. This DVD makes it way right to the top of my list in rotation.
Let's list the PROS of this DVD:
1. Music only option (for those of us who are veterans to the WATP series and can follow the steps without instruction)
2. New music to follow
3. The BOOSTED/JOGGING intervals are EXCELLENT. They aren't just at the end of the DVD or miles. It starts about 8 minutes in and lasts for about 12 minutes. That's 12 minutes (thereabouts) of BOOSTED/JOGGING. It's alternated between kicks, knee lifts, and jogging up and back.
4. Fast paced, doesn't take 30 minutes to break a really good sweat. You should sweat through the entire DVD.
5. If you are looking for an excellent DVD to repeat (back to back play), this gives an excellent middle of the week or weekend buster to the same old workout.
6. Same great arm, leg, and (dare I say it) aerobic workout!
Now let's list the CONS:
1. Leslie has a couple of spots where she is off on her sequences. But hey, noones perfect and after watching this JUST ONCE, put it on music only--you can do it without her telling you what to do and it makes it simpler.
2. Could be longer. Yeah, yeah...I am glutton for punishment, but I would LOVE to have an interval training DVD that did the JOGGING/BOOSTED WALKING for more than 33 minutes. But in a pinch it's a GREAT workout.
That's it! I strongly recommend this particular DVD for anyone who is looking to add a little something extra to their standard workout. It's just extreme enough to make a difference in the overall performance of workouts and easy enough to do everyday if that's what you choose.
Well that's enough for me, time to use this DVD again!
Happy walking ;-)
Shonene

The South Beach Diet Super Charged Workout Review

The South Beach Diet Super Charged Workout
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I personally loved this workout. I didn't find it too intense that I couldn't follow it, but I did have to work at keeping up. I personally didn't mind that the warm up was low intensity intervals that have you jogging in place right away as opposed to streching. The cardio segment is only 20 minutes and is divided into low, moderate and high interval with a cool down at the end. With the amount of time, a warm up with streching would have cut into the amount of time you could be burning substantial calories. Not to mention the instructor does give you "recovery" time between the interval exercises when you bring down the pace which I found both refreshing and different. I personally thought the instructor was quite encouraging and motivating. There is a lot of lunges and jumping involved, so if you have weak knees this might be a little stressful for you, however, it is a fun exercise and very doable if you are short on time. I have not tried the other "phase" exercises yet. However, based on the cardio segment alone I give this video 5 stars. I loved it and really am looking forward to using it again and again! The time just flew by for me although I was happy at the end because I did get a good workout! :)

The Abs Diet Workout Review

The Abs Diet Workout
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I liked this DVD a lot. There are three levels of ab workouts, and three levels of full-body circuit workouts as well as a full stretch to be used alone or during cool down period.
I can't imagine that someone can find this too easy. When it gets too easy, raise the amount of weight you are using. Do the circuit again. Currently, I'm doing all three ab workouts and then immediately start the full-body workout. When I'm done with the full-body workout at intermediate, I do it again at advanced. I choose heavier weight. Furthermore, even the DVD reminds us that the Abs diet DVD is supposed to be a guide. We have to change our workouts fairly often (monthly, some say), and this is a guide. Once one is familiar with these exercises, do some research and choose different exercises that work the correct muscles. Sometimes I workout along with this DVD, but I do a different exercise than they do. But, I like the rhythm and ease of working along with a dvd if I'm doing circuit training. I find it motivating.
Tom Holland is great. He knows his stuff, he's charming without being too chatty-- a definite problem with many exercise dvds-- and personable, and fully explains what he's doing. He stretches after the reps are completed while explaining every move he is making and how it benefits. I'd really like to see him in some other exercise dvds as well.
Lastly, the music is motivating without being too intrusive. It adds to the workout without distracting from it. Sound quality is good, camera work is good.

This workout is OK. It's certainly not my favourite, but it gets the job done and I definately felt the burn and felt 'new' muscles for a day later. I bought it because I enjoyed their book and wanted to see what they did here. They don't only focus on abs, but they have moves to work the entire body. There is some cardio too which is good for overall fat burning - it's not too dificult to do and mainly geared for intermediates. They give you low impact options if the higher impact is too tough to do or if you have bad joints. I have to say that the stretch at the end is really nice and worth the price of the dvd alone. All you need are some dumbbells and you're good to go. It's led well, and while I won't use it all the time, it's good to go back to it everynow and then to keep myself from workout boredom.

You: Staying Young Workout (DVD) Review

You: Staying Young Workout (DVD)
Average Reviews:

The two workouts are really decent. The first one gets you into working out if you haven't or it's a good workout for someone who has limited abilities (or age). The second workout pumps you up a little harder. I think both of the exercise routines are less than 20 minutes. The moves are easy to remember and for some of the warmout moves or stretches I find myself doing them when I have a few minutes on my hands or I'm waiting somewhere.
The chi gong routine is great. I would have liked more of it. It really does boost your energy and I feel extremely at peace and joyful when I finish it.
With all workouts and basically anything in life - you get out of it, what you put into it.

The Abs Diet Workout 2 Review

The Abs Diet Workout 2
Average Reviews:

I was expecting something along the lines of the book "The Abs Diet Get Fit, Stay Fit Plan," which offered a lot of variety. This is partly why I'm so disappointed. This appears to be "Abs Diet" in name only.
First off, all fitness DVDs should state up front what equipment you will need. This one does not. You'll need a mat, a pair of dumbbells, and for intermediate/advanced exercisers, a fitness ball to use as a weight bench.
Unlike the previous DVD, there are is no diet information - just workouts divided by frequency (3 to 6 times a week), and then by level. Regardless of which level you choose, you'll get the same thing: a 3-minute warm-up (static stretches and very light cardio), an abs segment, an intermediate/advanced weights circuit routine, and a cardio workout. The only difference in the entire thing is in the abs workout segment: beginners do 10 minutes, advanced do 12.
The exercises in the 25-minute circuit routine are straightforward, fairly standard (chest presses, shoulder presses, kickbacks, lunges, squats, crunches, etc.), and the same for ALL levels. Beginners will have to watch for modifications, even if they chose the "Beginner" menu item. Overall it flows well, and though the music is still a little annoying, it is not as bad as the first DVD.
For cardio, there's a 25-minute "speed interval" workout - a high/low intensity mix of jogging, straddle hops, squat jumps, jumping jacks, knee lifts, etc. There are no modifications, so this part of the DVD may be difficult for new exercisers, people very out of shape, or those with knee/back problems.
The breakdown in general is as follows:
3 Days a Week
Mon and Fri - Abs and Circuit training (35 min)
Wed - Circuit training and speed intervals (50 min)
4 Days a Week
Mon and Fri - Abs and Circuit training (35 min)
Wed - Circuit (no abs) (25 min)
Thu - Speed intervals (aka 'cardio') (25 min)
5 Days a Week
Mon, Wed, Fri - Abs and Circuit (35 min)
Tue, Thu - Speed intervals (25 min)
6 Days a Week
Mon, Wed, Fri - Abs and Circuit (35 min)
Tue, Thu, Sat - Speed intervals (25 min)
For mix and match, you can combine the 3-minute warm-up with either 10- or 12-minute abs, plus 25 minutes of circuit training (w/modifications) and 25 minutes of hi/lo cardio intervals.
My 3 stars are maily due to the lack of labeling about equipment, an intermediate/advanced workout labeled as beginner (if it's "Beginner," the workout should be tailored as such), a cardio workout that's the same for all fitness levels, and a suprising lack of variety. I'd recommend "The Abs Diet Get Fit, Stay Fit Plan" book over this DVD.
